Cowboys should trade Miles Austin for a 6th or 7th round pick

Crazy idea for two reasons:

• Miles Austin is a better KR than Thompson because he makes people miss and gets out of his cuts quicker.... They averaged the same yards per return!

• Miles Austin is freakishly athletic WR with a great combination of size, speed, toughness and athletic ability.

and Miles never returned kickoffs at any level in his football career before 2006. A TD in a playoff game for a rookie who never returned kicks before is not too shabby.

And it showed by 3 Kickoff fumbles (one lost) in 8 regular season games as a KR. One play in a playoff loss doesn't make up for that.

So we should get rid of him and keep a RB who cant pick up blitzes or pass protect? That's a very useful roster spot!!!

I'll stand by what I saw in pre-game warmups last year, and that's that Austin has lots of talent. Obviously, he has to start to deliver on that promise, but I'd hate to give up a potential player at a position where we desperately need some young talent.

In a tie-break between him and Thompson, he is probably less likely to have any off-field problems as well.

Actually, I like both and would hate to cut either of them. But the truth is, as a team that is finally accumulating talent, we're going to have to release some good players this year.

And I hate to even say it, but sometimes injuries make these decisions for you.

I don't think it will come down to a decision between Thompson and Austin. I like both of them a lot. Frankly, I think people very much underestimate Tyson Thompson's physical talent. Somehow this "Thompson is too stiff" meme took a life of it's own and now people just state it as fact because they've heard other people say it on the interwebs over and over. He's never really had a chance to show what he can do one way or another, other than he was allowed to return kickoffs full time in 2006 (and had one of the highest KR averages in the league). All he's shown in preseason games is that he averages about 4.8 ypc playing behind a bunch of scrub offensive linemen who have little to no experience working as a cohesive unit. But people forget that, because they're like little kids at Christmas ... they just want to play with the new shiny toy that Santa brought this year. Last year's shiny toy gets thrown in the bin.
