Talk of 8 and 8 is talk about a 500 season. I think it helps to put that in context. Bear in mind those numbers are in the NFC East. A very difficult place to rack up wins. The last team to rack up considerably better than 500 (here) was ..... You got it. US. So we may be a 500 team here but I think league wise we have actually performed at a higher level.
This year the gnats are rebuilding (or something ha ha), who knows what RG3 will have and the rebuilding eaglets.
This is going to be our best chance to make the playoffs. But not without Tony. Once we are in anything can happen. See gnats history.
This is NOT the year to blow things up.

I seem to recall use winning division titles and even a playoff game with Romo at QB.

The 8-8 seasons didnt start until the Boy Genius took over. Maybe the problem is not Romo, maybe the problem is the guy who mismanges games worst than a 10 yr old playing Madden.

We can't handle the truth !!! :laugh2:

Ed Werder said yesterday on Galloway that the reason no deal has been done at this point is that there is a huge difference between what JJ wants to pay Tony and what Tom Condon wants in a new deal. Tony is starting from the premise that if he stands pat and takes the 11m due on his contract for this year and if the Boys franshise him next year at 22m or 23m he can guarantee himself 33m or 34m in two years.

If the Boys trade him, the new team would still need to get him to sign a new contract. I suspect Condon knows that the minimum they would accept is somthing similar to what Brady did with almost all of the contract guaranteed.

I think it's likely that Tony plays out the contract or is traded during the draft. IMVHO

WOW !!! High stakes Chicken !!! Who blinks first ???

This is not a sign at all costs deal. It's a situation in which we have to be able to accept the fact that IF we can't come to a deal, we must be ready to trade these players.

That's the deal.

Either way you have to resign him: sing and trade or sign and keep. No way we let him play out his last year and get nothing. Unless you tag him next year with either a transitional tag or a franchise tag which is currently unavailable. All I'm saying is to be able to field a decent team this year we have to extend him. There are only so many bargain basement players out there. Knowing the modus operandi here we're "all in" with this group of players and we'll need to address the holes on the roster this off-season.

Dallas had playoff talent to start last season.

They did not have playoff talent after injuries. 8-8 was about where that team deserved to be. No one anywhere ever wants to acknowledge injuries and the fickle nature of the NFL but it is very real. The main thing the salary cap era has robbed from teams is depth.

I don't want to see Dallas hand Romo a top 2-3 QB salary. That would be paying him a premium for personal performance without demanding a team return. BUT they certainly should discuss long-term deals with him that can essentially guarantee him a top 10 QB salary for the first 3 years in return for a fair cap hit (10-12m) the next couple seasons. AND include incentives for team performance that would elevate him into the elite QB salary range.

Nobody should happy with 8-8. The FO isn't, the players aren't and the fans aren't.
It's a whole team thing though..as always.
If you want to just use Romo as an example, then 8-8 is the floor and 13-3 is the cap so far.
Six full seasons starting.
Four winning seasons (9-7, 13-3, 9-7, 11-5)
Two 8-8 seasons.
No losing seasons.

Yea, Mickey said the other day on Talking Cowboys that teams usually guarantee the first 1 or 2 yrs of the deal and then have a roster bonus in year 3 which is basically an "out" if the player has not earned his contract.

He said that is pretty standard around the league. It is also interesting to note that of all the $100 million dollar contracts that have been signed, no player has collected more than 50% of the money to date.

In other words, most contracts of this size have "ghost years" that the player will never see. Flacco is never going to get $120 million, in fact he will be lucky to get $50 million out of that deal.

Poor Flacco will only get $50 million.

I agree, this is probably what Jerry is thinking but I am not at all sure that this is what Tony is thinking. He may just elect to stand on his deal and hit FA. That, IMO, is why it's pretty key to figure out where we stand with Tony's contract prior to the seasons start.

Flacco will get every bit of 61m for the first 3 years. They will restructure later to get the cap number down, but he almost has to collect most of the 120m or the cap hit will be tremendous.

So you are happy with 8-8?

Otherwise clarify
You can leave out the rant.
Were you referring to the team's record when Romo starts the majority of the games?
4 winning seasons, 2 .500 seasons, 0 losing seasons. Was that the issue? Just saying "wrong" is kind of open-ended, so please clarify.

BTW, this is not and argument to sign Ropmo to a monster long term deal...just stating the facts.

Thanks bk.

Several good points in there for the masses to see.

I think the cap hit still being substancial even if the Cowboys trade him is a biggie.

BTW, If he takes 5/65 it would surprise me, but if the guranteed money is big than you never know. I'm assuming 5/80+. 35-40 guaranteed

I think age is a factor ina contract only as it realtes to the years in the contract and guaranteed money. If you think he will stay at this level (2011 and 2012 seasons) for anohter 4-5 years, you pay him just the same you would if he was 28 (unless you are projecting big improvement still formt he 28 year old). But if you think Romo will hit the wall in 2 years, the risk goes up and maybe the price goes down....or front load him big time.

I think age has to be a factor. He got a late start, but he has taken a beating. His mobility will almost assuredly be the first thing to go.

I think the hope is that he only needs to use it about half as much when they fix the line. :D His knees are fine though.

I'm curious. Who do you have as a replacement for this loser?

I'm actually more concerned with his shoulder and back, then anything. He's sustained fairly serious injuries to both and those things are only going to get worse as time goes on.

I like Tony. I feel like Tony is one of the 8 or 10 best guys in all of sports. I think he's a heck of a player and I think he's a credit to his family. I think he has a tendency to lose sight of the fact that he can't do it all and that hurts him in certain situations but I genuinely like Tony Romo. However, that does not prevent me from looking at this thing from the long term prospective and seeing that signing Tony could kill this team for years to come.

I don't expect Tony to settle for a lessor deal, just because we are Dallas. I think Tony should go out and get the best deal he can, in the best possible situations that will allow him to compete for a Championship. I wish that were us but I don't believe it is.

I have no ill will towards the guy and I wish him all the luck if he decides to leave. It is not his fault that we have failed to put together a team that is balanced enough to win it all. On the other hand, we have had chances to move to the next level and we have failed to perform so I'd have to say that in those situations, a certain amount of the responsibility does go to Tony.

It is what it is.
