He was the Texans linebacker coach and the 49ers offered him the DC job and he turned it down, ended up getting a HC job instead. He's never been a DC and may never be.
Just for clarity, he was actually the Texans DC after being their LB coach. He then went to the Texans as HC

If hiring Zimmer for DC is Coach Jones’s idea of going “all-in” and making a “splash hire” then Dallas is in trouble.
Zimmer got run out of Dallas on a rail for his defenses being vanilla and predictable and now, if hired, he is all of a sudden bring the pressure…

I would love a young up and coming guy, my first choice would be Al Harris, even with him openly not being an X’s and O’s guy as long as his teams play disciplined football. I do not want Ron and BB will not come here to be DC, and I don’t think Vrabel has any interest in being a DC or at least a DC here. BB’s son is an interesting option one I don’t know much about. So with having a lame duck coach and a team that’s about to have a pretty significant turnover Zimmer isn’t a bad choice. Not my first choice but def not the worst hire. How my point about him being able to adjust isn’t a bad thing and not sure why it should be considered a bad thing. But knowing our options I’m fine with it.

Take a listen to this, maybe you'll see why I'm against Zimmer.

The one thing that is clear to me is that we need to build the DEF around Micah as an OLB in a 3-4. How would hiring Zim help with this? I just can't see it helping at all.

Zimmer will bring the simmer, but the Cowboys need someone to get them boiling.

Probably covered elsewhere but, what's Zimmer been doing since he last coached? A quick Internet search shows he was a defensive analyst at Jackson State in 2022.

It may seem nice to hire someone the front office knows and trusts but, come on, man. We really can't find someone with a bit more going for them than a past HC and Cowboys coach?
