First of all, this is just a strawman
U have no idea what his salary will be

And even if it is 2 mill, will he give up his roster spot as well?

The excuse making is just getting nauseous

of course I don't, but nobody else knows the terms, either, yet they can get all bent about it. He played much better at the end of the year, and if this re-structure eliminates the need to take a bunch of dead money hit on our cap, it COULD be an ok thing. I am just not one to rush to judgment of a decision which I do not know any details of.

There is no words how Pissed I am right now.

@AdamSchefter: Here comes more salary-cap space for Dallas: Cowboys expected to restructure contract of OT Doug Free.

Does a pay-cut create dead money?

I don't know, I think it would be a guarantee of his bonus to change, so cutting him would mean a medium cap hit.

If he is just geting his 7 mil cut to 2 mil, does that still make this franchise a joke? I mean for saving the 5 mil, not for any other reason you may have.

That's got to be the direction. Even if we draft a T, having four guys who can play at that position isn't a bad thing

The other piece of this puzzle is that we made an outstanding move last off-season signing Parnell to a 3 year - 4 mill deal. I don't know if he's the answer at Tackle but having another two years to look at him for cheap sure is a smart move.

So when we are in November and it's a crucial 3rd and goal and Free lets his man right past him for the easy sack, are you guys going to be less infuriated because he took a pay cut? :laugh2:

I've said all along a pay cut is better than a straight release. We will take the cap hit either way and it's better to get the cap space and not have 8m in dead money. Free had a terrible year last year, but he had 2 good years before that. It is likely that power guys figured him out, but technique wise he was off last year and there is a chance for a bounce back as a swing T.

Don't know for sure. I was hoping there would be no chance going into next season but it looks like he's being brought back.

My point is, pay cut or restructure...does it really matter in the grand scheme of things. Does the fact that he's getting paid 2 million instead of 7, take the sting off of his crucial mistakes game after game?

Fair enough
Lets wait for the actual numbers to be released
If this is a straight salary cut and he does not end up on the roster unless he out real competition, then this may be ok

Given that he is being brought in as a backup most likely, then a pay cut is MUCH better than a restructure. This way you don't open up yet ANOUTHER hole that has to be filled, and don't have a large amount of dead money hanging over our heads next year. And you are assuming by your statement than any other backup that would be brought in, and playing instead of Free would be significantly better player than Free. Which is a HUGE assumption, after all he would most likely be a backup.

A pay cut does not.

Pay-cut is definitely the best option. We are freeing up needed space while keeping our depth in tact. If we draft another player it's just more competition. Do we really want Parnell walking around camp as a guaranteed starter?

Is there a chance that beginning of last year was the fluke? He played well in 2010 and 2011 and was playing better after switching out with Parnell. Maybe he was injured or just lost mentally. We have no one else at T right now and keeping him at a much lower cost is the smart move.

I've said since about game 10 of last season that if Doug Free is the starting Right Tackle going into 2013 than this team is just not serious about winning.

You can't expect to have a good Oline with a guy who isn't physically able to handle NFL linemen.

Maybe he is back on the juice again & he'll have a good year.

A source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the team is also expected to restructure the contract of Doug Free; however, sources told ESPNDallas.com that the offensive tackle's deal won't be reworked.

Free was horrible last year, no doubt about it. But, lets not pretend that he has no talent at all. And has no upside at all.

If you can get Free to take a salary cut, that keeps his salary at a level that is acceptable for a quality backup then a restructured salary (via salary cut), would be MUCH MUCH better than out right cutting him. You keep your swing tackle in case Tyron Smith gets hurt, you keep from opening up another hole on a roster that has more than enough holes as it is, and you keep deadweight from cutting him from hanging over your head next year as well.
