Please for the love of God let this be true and Schefter is wrong

Looks it is..... @Cowboysaddicts: according to @clarencehilljr1m A source close to Doug Free and a Cowboys source said his contract is not being restructured #cowboyszone

I think its because they switched him from Rt T to left and back to Rt and a new OL coach. Many had said he was a better fit for left T spot and all this change got into his head. He looked a lot better at the end of the yr and another factor was he 100% all yr maybe he was dinged up for the beginning of the yr and it wasn't reported. All theses things could mess up a guys head so best bet is to see how he does rather than cut and have dead money. Worst case we have a swing tackle that has started before at both spots.

Free was horrible last year, no doubt about it. But, lets not pretend that he has no talent at all. And has no upside at all.

If you can get Free to take a salary cut, that keeps his salary at a level that is acceptable for a quality backup then a restructured salary (via salary cut), would be MUCH MUCH better than out right cutting him. You keep your swing tackle in case Tyron Smith gets hurt, you keep from opening up another hole on a roster that has more than enough holes as it is, and you keep deadweight from cutting him from hanging over your head next year as well.

I don't think people are pretending.

There are some players (Chris Faulk and Brennen Williams) projected to be drafting between the 3rd and 5th rounds in the upcoming draft that appear capable of playing better than Doug Free at RT.

A restructure is useless, all it does is push more money back to later years meaning he will still cost a lot of money to cut next year. Restructure means he still gets paid the same amount but salary becomes a bonus and lowers the cap hit but makes it higher to cut him later due to proration of the bonus.

A renegotiated contract or rework, means he will take a pay cut and will save the team money and would be less to cut hum in the future.

I hope its a renegotiated contract and not a restructure.

If you think that Doug Free has no talent, and is a complete waste, then you absolutely are pretending.

Yeah, cutting someone who has proven he can play both the LT and RT positions, although certainly not at ideal starting level capacity the last two years. And putting a massive deadweight on your team for next year, while opening up yet another hole that this team MUST address is a smart move in your opinion?

All of this on the assumption that an OT capable of challenging Parnell for the starting spot as a rookie will definitely be available in the 2nd or 3rd round? Have you not seen in past drafts how OT's almost ALWAYS go before they are projected to go?

Free either needs to take a severe pay cut or be cut. He'll be lucky if he stays in the league.

Alex Barron just got a contract with the Raiders.

As bad as Free played for us this past year...if Barron can land a gig, so will Free...just at a MUCH lower price tag.

Giving him a pay cut doesn't make him a better player.
So true.

But it does make him a more tolerable backup.

Romo's agent is on the phone right now asking ...to be polite..."what the heck?"
"Now THIS is going to cost you". lol

Agreed, Tom Condon is going to add a couple of million onto the deal to compensate Romo for the broken bones he will get because of this move.

Romo's price tag just increased, yall know that right?

If it's a "restructure" it does nothing to help this team other than open a little space now.

If he's taking a pay cut, which he should, it's a step in the right direction.

Have to see how it works out but simply spreading out his base salary from this year is a horrible move.

I guess I'm in the minority here when I say that Free deserves one more year. C'mon he actually looked decent when switching off with Parnell in the last quarter of the season. At least keep him as a backup.

Although I do agree that a pay cut would be the best option at this point. Cutting Free will do no good, though.
