I guess I'm in the minority here when I say that Free deserves one more year. C'mon he actually looked decent when switching off with Parnell in the last quarter of the season. At least keep him as a backup.

Although I do agree that a pay cut would be the best option at this point. Cutting Free will do no good.

I'm with you on this one. Only as a Backup, with a paycut and not a restructure.

It wouldn't surprise me if that huge Free contract played at least some role in the offensive line coach change.
You now the contract was based on a full assessment and thumbs up form the OL coach. As crazy as some here my think Jerry is, he does not make money decesions like that in a vacuum.

What is going to be halarious is if we march the same 5 guys out there come September.

:laugh1:

This board will be wild if that happens.

If you think that Doug Free has no talent, and is a complete waste, then you absolutely are pretending.

Yeah, cutting someone who has proven he can play both the LT and RT positions, although certainly not at ideal starting level capacity the last two years. And putting a massive deadweight on your team for next year, while opening up yet another hole that this team MUST address is a smart move in your opinion?

All of this on the assumption that an OT capable of challenging Parnell for the starting spot as a rookie will definitely be available in the 2nd or 3rd round? Have you not seen in past drafts how OT's almost ALWAYS go before they are projected to go?

I didn't say the rookie would challenge Parnell for the starting job. I said the rookie would be better than Free.

Parnell, despite having zero experience playing OT in a real NFL game, played better than Free in 2012. I've reviewed every snap that Parnell had using the All-22 from NFL.com. He played 1-1/2 games at LT and then alternated with Free at RT in the latter part of the season.

The fact that a player with Zero experience was alternated in the lineup with a multi-year veteran should tell you all that you need to know about Free. Parnell is stronger and quicker than Free with significant upside. Free has no upside.

Excellent. No use in throwing a way a good tackle and then eating tons of dead money for doing it.

Given that he is being brought in as a backup most likely, then a pay cut is MUCH better than a restructure. This way you don't open up yet ANOUTHER hole that has to be filled, and don't have a large amount of dead money hanging over our heads next year. And you are assuming by your statement than any other backup that would be brought in, and playing instead of Free would be significantly better player than Free. Which is a HUGE assumption, after all he would most likely be a backup.
How is this a huge assumption when he was the WORST right tackle in the league last year? :bang2:

Why are our fans so scared of letting go of players. :bang2:

Apparently there is no re-structure anyways and that Shefter is a joke.

All of this is moot now. Wait for June 1st on Free.

If he was easily replaced, he would have already been replaced. /facepalm

Some people just don't get it. Tackles don't grow on trees.

Logic up and let your emotional roller-coaster go. Making decisions based on emotion is a path to disaster.

Based what has been reported directly from the Cowboys nothing will be done with Free until after the draft. I have seen nothing that changes that view from the Cowboys other that what appears to be a false report of restructuring of the contract.

My own view if I think Free will either be cut or will having to take a big cut in pay and likely be a backup T.

If Free had played all year at the level he did once he rotated... I'd still want to release him June 2nd.

He simply isn't worth 8m per year.
He's maybe worth half that.

When he signed it was to be the long-term solution at LT.
The day we drafted T. Smith his contract became bloated.
Once he fell down at LT it became bad.
Once he then failed for a 2nd year in an easier and cheaper position to fill it became untenable altogether.

Someone may well get a quality version of Doug Free in 2013. But no one is paying 8m per year for that privilege. He's a 2-3m per year guy. Probably signs a short term deal for a year at 2-3m per.

This time next year I expect us to extend T.Smith. By then we nee dot have a cheaper (and hopefully better) starting RT.

Well, when you're constantly looking 3rd round down to find a book end they are extremely hard to find and replace.

When you're looking 3rd round all the way to UDFA to find a franchise QB, they're very hard to replace.

It's not that the fans don't realize good players at these positions don't grow on trees. It's that our FO is looking to find the rare deal at 2 of the most important positions on the field.

Invest at those positions like you do in skill positions and try to find the rare find at lesser prominent positions. I'm pretty sure that's the general consensus around here.

9th overall pick: Tyron Smith tackle, USC.

Jerry's worst night mare is cutting Free and having him show up elsewhere and be a serviceable starter.

Count me among those who feel he can be salvaged. We lose less by trying than by cutting him loose right now.

Still need to cover our bases and add another regardless.

Doesnt matter. The only thing that matters is what he does in a Cowboys uniform.
