Cutting Dez is a Huge Mistake

Are you stating that Hurns and Thompson are better receivers than Dez? Are you saying that you want to spend a premium pick on a WR instead of a LB (where we have 1.75 starters for 3 positions and 1 injury away from .75 starter for 3 positions)? If we can't get a decent LB who can contribute (in a fairly weak LB class) because we have to use a 1st or 2nd on a WR, then this Defense will be a joke and cutting Dez will be the punchline.

In regards to WRs, Hurns is likely better for the Cowboys than what they got from Dez in 2017.

If Dez and Hurns were DBs:
Dez - Would get some awesome INTs but would give up big plays often. A pass would have equal likelihood of being a TD for the opponent or an INT for Dez.

Hurns - Would have less INTs but would give up way less plays, big or small.

Draft and LBs:

A team should not draft with definite plans for a draft pick to be a starter as a rookie.

If you look at the roster and draft from that perspective, then things make more sense and teams make less mistakes.

If the Cowboys 2018 season is tied to drafting a LB, they're already in trouble.

For 2 LB positions (WLB and MLB):
Lee: Great when healthy.
Jaylon: Good enough by the end of last season.
Thomas: Has been OK when starting NFL games.

The SLB only plays about 15% of the snaps and Wilson has been good enough there.

Cutting Dez is only a mistake if he's something other than what the Cowboys team and their FO believes he's not. They've seen enough of him to be an expert judge of what he's able to do and what he's not able to do. I strongly believe they made the right decision and I'm sure the team will stand by their decision. The future of the team is yet to be determined. Hopefully, what they have in tow now and in the near future will be enough to convince their fans to remain patient and pull for them to succeed. They're at a crossroad now and so is their fan support. Be a fan first and a critic second and give them a chance.
Will give us a lot of money next year.

I'm not a stat guy. Hurns might turn out to be better than the dez of 2015-2017. Or he might not. But ridding ourselves of the distraction makes the move justifiable. Imo

You claimed Dez wasn’t a good player and you couldn’t be more wrong. He may not be the player he was but he’s still a good player. To say he’s not a good player is being ridiculous! Receivers are judged on their stats. One of the reasons Dez is no longer here is because his stats didn’t live up to his contract. There’s not a receiver we brought in or that’s currently on the team that had better numbers than he did last season. He led in every statistical category over the receivers we currently have. Hurns and Thompson didn’t even combine for as many TDs as Dez had last season.

If you notice I said the word "contribute" not start. Still, many players drafted in the first round start right away. As far as Dez vs. Hurns, we have no idea what to expect from A Dak to Hurns connection. Outside of Witten and occasionally Butler and Dez, Dak did not look good throwing to anybody last season.

Actually it gives us a lot of money this year. He was designated an immediate cut (not June 1st), so his base salary is available to spend now! Now only if we can talk Jon Schneider into a 2nd Rounder for Earl Thomas (instead of the 1st and 3rd he's demanding).

Dak completion rates:
Target TWill 65%
Target Butler 65%
Target Witten 72%
Target Dez 52%

Target Everyone except Dez 67%
Target Dez 52%

Yeah gives us money now and later, double our luck.

I was vocal about how cutting him was a mistake.

But now, after seeing all the bleeding heart reasons that others keep bleating about, I might have to revise that opinion.

Targets are one of the dumbest stats. They include passes that are throw-aways or inaccurate passes. Yes, Dez dropped a bunch of passes, but Dak threw a bunch of crappy passes too. BTW, why not include Beasley? He had more catches than Butler.

The staff is going to collectively be holding their breath during the 2018 season hoping this move doesn’t blow up in their face.

If Jerry had to be convinced to release Dez, some people have slipped their head into a noose.

Again, these guys did not command big bucks in FA. The reason? They're not as good as you're saying they are.
Ok we can play that game....let's see what someone offers Dez and then compare...so far he has been out in the streets for a week, without even a visit.

Then let's discuss monopoly money vs real money. Do you think dez would be worth 16.5 million against the cap this year.I don't. Not based on performance and not for the distractions.

I thought for sure he would get snapped up and get more than $12.5 million after seeing what Watkins got.
