why would anybody trade for him knowing we were going to release him??? There was no way he was going to take a pay cut and there was no way Dallas would let him stay with a $16.5M cap hit. He will sign quickly and will be somebody else's problem now.

Anybody with half a brain could see this coming. And how do we know that he wasn't shopped? Nobody is giving up picks for a soon to be 30 yo WR with declining production and injury history when they could wait it out and pick him up for a year or two and keep their picks. it's not rocket science.

Why not?

It's actually a pretty team friendly deal at this point. Only $12.5MM due in base salary in 2018 and no longer term dead money left. With guys like Moncrief getting like $10MM for one year, $12.5MM to Dez is pretty decent.

The problem is that the Cowboys killed any value he might have.
lol Sydla, do you ever get tired explaining cap hits to people...i swear most football fans don't know the first thing about the mathematics behind it all...

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t understand NFL finances and contracts. But how does New England get a first round pick for Cooks and we can’t trade Dez for anything?
Does that make all the Dez haters happy about this front office ?
Cook is a younger more talent receiver at this point. and the Patriots had no reason to trade him, thus they had leverage...Cowboys had zero leverage.

Cutting Dez instantly makes us a better team... this move has given me new hope for this organization. Now we just need to get rid of Witten, and we can get back to getting serious.

Honestly, I used to be one of those guys. But some reading and research and it's really not that hard to figure out.

Only thing I can hope is they use the money to get better. Going to be really weird with no dez this season. Loved that daft pick. I wanted him the whole time.

Loved the pick and he's been my favorite Cowboy since. I don't think I'll ever like another Cowboy player as much as Dez.

If we wanted to cut an underperformer and save money, Witten should have been the guy in that office today.

For the Official Record

This is a gigantic mistake...... should have learned from DWare....... could have saved almost as much with a simple restructure

He could have been traded at worst....he will sign elsewhere quickly and he will play for 5-6 more years like ABoldin
Agree. Shouldn’t have done this. No easy way to do it but should have waited till we had a real replacement.

You think the front office screwed up here?

Wait until they use the 19th pick on a WR under the justification that they have to replace Dez.

I agree here if they do that, but they almost have to now, unless they’re going the Wr by committee route.
