Cutting Dez is a Huge Mistake

Cook is a younger more talent receiver at this point. and the Patriots had no reason to trade him, thus they had leverage...Cowboys had zero leverage.
Dez had 0m in guaranteed money owed........ leverage wasn't an issue for anyone

Not even asking for a paycut him means they just wanted to move on but they weren't forced to do so

That tells you how badly he had worn out his welcome.

I didn't think they'd cut him this season. We lost a lot of talent at WR that we're realistically not going to replace. We'll end up using those targets probably more efficiently than we were using them with Dez. I'm torn on how good or bad decision this really was, but I hate to see Dez go.
I am torn about this as well. Many posters on here called this one correct. I just didn't believe that they would do it. Didn't think there was any way in hades that he wouldn't get an extension/reworked contract. I was wrong and I stand corrected. I hate to see him go and really hope he doesn't end up in our division. Well, guess we will have to get our popcorn ready and see what surprise they have in store for us come the draft.

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t understand NFL finances and contracts. But how does New England get a first round pick for Cooks and we can’t trade Dez for anything?
Does that make all the Dez haters happy about this front office ?

Know how that whole Cooks thing came out of nowhere. Contrast that with this team literally telling everyone everytime they're going to cut someone. This team is run by clowns who want a circus.

For the Official Record

This is a gigantic mistake...... should have learned from DWare....... could have saved almost as much with a simple restructure

He could have been traded at worst....he will sign elsewhere quickly and he will play for 5-6 more years like ABoldin
If he wasn't willing to restructure then thy only move was to pay ways. Dez will be out of the NFL in 2-3 years Max. Mark it down

Cutting Dez instantly makes us a better team... this move has given me new hope for this organization. Now we just need to get rid of Witten, and we can get back to getting serious.

You’re crazy, we stayed the same, or got worse by this move. It’s what they do with the money saved.

Dez says he regained his edge after taking it personal. Wish he did that earlier.

You really cant figure that out?

If that's their excuse, it might be another level of stupid for this franchise. I didn't even think that was possible.

Let me be clear, I have been all for moving Dez, just not like this .

Why not?

It's actually a pretty team friendly deal at this point. Only $12.5MM due in base salary in 2018 and no longer term dead money left. With guys like Moncrief getting like $10MM for one year, $12.5MM to Dez is pretty decent.

The problem is that the Cowboys killed any value he might have.
His salary might have been 12.5 but his cap hit was 16.5. I'm glad they did not june 1st cut him just rip the bandaid off and eat it this year. I hope they didn't cut him only to clear space I hope they have a plan to add talent.

You think the front office screwed up here?

Wait until they use the 19th pick on a WR under the justification that they have to replace Dez.
I am already cringing at the thought but that's what is more than likely going to happen.

Well you know, and before I post this I will acknowledge that I have not read through this entire thread, there is still a chance that Dez may not be gone. I mean, it's a small chance but, by giving Dez his release, he can actually go into the market and see what is out there. At that point, we can decide to offer him, based on what the market dictates and maybe a deal is reached. That might actually work out better for all parties, just depending. Dez gets paid his signing bonus in advance and is playing on a new contract and the Team, assuming the market sets the price lower, still gets Dez and a renegotiated contract at a more ideal cap hit.

There is that possibility.

I hate to see him go. It's going to be hard to replace the all time leading scorer but oh well, next man up!

Where did you see they didn't offer a pay cut?
