Cutting Dez is a Huge Mistake

Surgically removing cancer can be a real tricky business

You say he was a cancer, You assume he was a cancer, if you want to play that card. Then maybe they should’ve cut Zeke who was suspended 6 games( although it was bogus) but he did lay the tracks to get run over by Goodell. D Lawerence suspended, D Irving suspended. You want to talk cancers?

His salary might have been 12.5 but his cap hit was 16.5. I'm glad they did not june 1st cut him just rip the bandaid off and eat it this year. I hope they didn't cut him only to clear space I hope they have a plan to add talent.

But that's not the point of my response. It was asked why someone would want to trade for his contract.

His contract would actually be enticing because there is no guaranteed money. So any team picking him up in a trade just gets a guy being paid $12MM this year and no downside of having to take a dead money hit to take him on. They can cut him if they want after one year with no penalty.

Well you know, and before I post this I will acknowledge that I have not read through this entire thread, there is still a chance that Dez may not be gone. I mean, it's a small chance but, by giving Dez his release, he can actually go into the market and see what is out there. At that point, we can decide to offer him, based on what the market dictates and maybe a deal is reached. That might actually work out better for all parties, just depending. Dez gets paid his signing bonus in advance and is playing on a new contract and the Team, assuming the market sets the price lower, still gets Dez and a renegotiated contract at a more ideal cap hit.

There is that possibility.
I'm sorry that's not even remotely possible.

I am torn about this as well. Many posters on here called this one correct. I just didn't believe that they would do it. Didn't think there was any way in hades that he wouldn't get an extension/reworked contract. I was wrong and I stand corrected. I hate to see him go and really hope he doesn't end up in our division. Well, guess we will have to get our popcorn ready and see what surprise they have in store for us come the draft.

I'm not completely shocked. As @Risen Star pointed out, when they look to bring in a high-dollar FA at WR at the start of FA, that tells you a bit about what they were thinking. I thought when that didn't pan out, they probably would shift gears and draft and develop a guy for next season, though. That's the route I'd have preferred.

But at the same time, as I said above there, Dez did get a ton of targets and the production wasn't there. And when he was out in 2016, the passing game didn't miss a beat. It's not the end of the world from a tactical perspective. I just am bummed to see Dez go. He was easy to root for.

That assumes the front office is incapable of making a dumb decision.

Surely you aren't arguing against that possibility right?

Surely you aren't arguing that every decision made by the front office is stupid?

Bryant's stats for the last 3 years in comparison with other WR's carrying similar contracts:

Catches Yards TDs Snaps
Hopkins 285 3853 28 3254
Jones 307 4724 17 2439
Thomas 278 3336 16 2704
Bryant 150 2035 17 2024
Green 227 3339 22 2338
Brown 343 4651 31 2892
Hilton 217 3538 15 2794

It was 2 one year team options......very good contract for a contender or pretender

I can understand some people liking / not liking the decision but some are wishing that Dez eats us alive. That's putting "A" star before "The Star" and that I can't understand.

When it comes to decisions like this, outside the draft, yeah they tend to make a lot of mistakes.

And this has a trickle down effect now in the draft. This organization is now going to feel the pressure of having to take a WR early and possibly reach for one, especially when most agree they need some impact defenders in this draft. This team just seems stuck in the mud, never really improving, but rather just kind of moving pieces here, some there and always ending back kind of in the middle.

This is something like the Patriots have done forever. Guess time will tell whether it was smart or really stupid.

Could it be a mistake?

You bet.

But the nature of the league is that you (the team) has to make decisions like this... There's no getting around it.

I'm so torn about this. I understand it, but I have an affinity for Dez and I'm not afraid to admit it. The dude grew up under the worst of circumstances and made something of himself. He's passionate- too passionate- but I'll take that vice all day every day. Yes, he could be a distraction, and yes, he wasn't reliable when it came to always making the right choices. But I love the dude anyway.

At the end of the day I see that he had become a 1- or 2-trick pony and his strengths did not match up with Dak's. I think he could still be a tremendous weapon with a Rodgers or even a Wentz who can get that ball high and tight on the upfield throws. He didn't fit what we want to do offensively and his personality was not exactly user friendly. And in this league youth is an asset. So I get it. But I don't have to like it.

Agreed. Handled this situation terribly.
