There are maybe 3 QBs alive that can carry an unimaginative offense with Deonte Thompson, Allen Hurns, Cole Beasley and a green Michael Gallup as your main pass targets. With that said, Dak also deserves equal blame for not playing well. No doubt about it.
With that said, we're probably looking at a more consistent 8-4 team right now if Cooper is on the team starting Week 1. Meaning you don't need a miraculous 4 game winning streak just to get to 7-5.
With a decent play caller, I think the offense could have been a lot more effective, with just the players we started the season with.
Austin was making plays before being hurt. Butler made plays last year. We never fed him while he was. We only gave him one target this year. And we used Thompson as a possession receiver, not using him deep. All that speed largely going to waste.
But as you say, there was blame to go around beyond Linehan. The oline has come alive with Alexander gone and Colombo taking over. Dak was playing poorly. And then there's Hurd.
But Hurns being such a dud really did hurt. He was supposed to be a solid possession WR. Our best outside guy, though maybe not as good as Beasley. But his first 6 games were just poor, culminating in a 5 target 0 receptions "effort".
But right after that, just before the bye, he went 5 of 6 for 74 yards. The kind of production we needed all along from him. Since the bye, he's only had 4 targets, all of which he caught, for about 17.5 yards a pop.
With Cooper bumping everyone down a notch in the rotation, we've got a good top 3 with Cooper, Beasley, and Gallup. Nice balance there too. Hurns adds one good play a game.
Sure wish we had a TE, though.
