All we need is (nominated for Cowboy offseason buzzword of the year for 2018) “route runners”...
Let's get it right if we're going to make light of our progress at WR.

All we need are guys that can be trusted to be where they need to be when they need to be there. Technicians. Gym rats. Guys that want to support each other to become one of the most talented Dallas WR units in quite some time.

We finally have what we needed. Onward & upward.

They don't.

If the Cowboys go empty backfield there are mismatches all over the field.

Cedrick Wilson may end up being the real star...just wish once that Dallas rookie WR's and TE's would get reps in real games. BTW, Noah Brown is NOT the answer....not a difference maker.
Noah Brown is going to make you eat those words sir.

Does anyone think Gallup is going to hit the ground running fresh out of the gate? More often than not there is a long learing curve with rookie WRs.

Hurns and Austin need to take charge. I never wanted to have to bank on Williams and it looks like it's no longer part of the equation anyway.

This WR corp is a HUGE question mark.
Yes... For the record, I think Gallup is going to hit the ground running.

I just wanted to get that on record.

Thanks.

Many look at this as "refreshing". I understand the desire for change at the WR position, but continuity is a major factor in execution. How can you have that when your QB has zero experience with the entire corp of WRs?
Welp.... He had zero experience with his alleged #1 WR last year so there's nowhere to go but up.

We've loaded the WR corps with talent top to bottom. Watch them work.

So Dak is chump change? Disrespecting our QB like that doesn't win you any fan points. Dak is plenty good enough to make this work with no real 1WR. The O-line and Zeke have Dak's back.
I see the DHC was out in full force in this thread.

so, having a dominant player that requires more defensive resources (double / triple teams) isn't a need?

i weep for the future of this franchise
No... Having 3 or 4 of that same ilk is better. I'd personally rather have 3 #1.5s that are technicians who can be trusted vs a single #1 that can't be trusted to answer his alarm clock let alone run a route.

JD you hit it right on the money with this post. I don’t want to bring up Dez again, but in watching “All or Nothing” Dez wasn’t happy if the ball wasn’t going to him and he made it known.

And the narrative of great WR’s doing that and that they are high maintenance isn’t true for all. I never heard Jerry Rice, Julio Jones, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Jordy Nelson, Wes Walker and many others always b******g about the ball not being thrown their way.
Ding dong the cancer is gone.

buncha 2's, I like this philosophy if the coaches use the correct game-plan...you take away Dez and Witten that wanted every ball from their respective positions and the D was ready for you...not so much now...thus, if the game plan is set up appropriately, the offense could do quite well with zeke back for 16 games and sprinkle in Austin here and there...those two options keep the D honest...

Note: the OP thread title is misleading vs what Dak said, IMO...the thread title almost seems to stink of "there is no one good enough to be considered a #1"...dak said no teams need a #1

If he plays well he'll have no complaints from me. But I love it. I get attacked from the Romo lovers and now the Dak lovers. I must be doing something right. lol
Please explain to us what you're doing right. I'm intrigued. :D

The line giving him time will go a long long way
Absolutely, Jip. It starts with our Oline. I'm hearing Connor Williams is tearing it up in OTAs. He's going to be a monster starting at Left Guard!

I keep telling ppl the offense goes as the line goes. Period. People like to try and discount Dak but they don't want to talk about Tyron's absent back and Chaz Green's running with the bulls.

Dak Prescott - QB - Cowboys
Dak Prescott said he doesn't think the Cowboys need a No. 1 receiver.

"I don’t know if any team in the league necessarily needs a No. 1 receiver," said Prescott. "It’s about getting the ball out, spreading the ball around, keeping the defense on its toes." Prescott never quite clicked with Dez Bryant, which could have been a factor in the team cutting him this offseason. Now Prescott is left with a paper-thin receiving corps featuring free agent signing Allen Hurns, Terrance Williams, slot receiver Cole Beasley and third-round rookie Michael Gallup. Dak is going as a mid-range QB2 in early mock drafts.

I agree....I mean we've been without one for several years already

I sort of concur with this. When Dez was out with his foot injury in 2016, we didn't have a true no 1 WR. In an ironic twist, the result was that a lot of receivers saw their reception totals increase substantially, and our offense was motoring along beautifully as a result. So, I think Dak is on to something here.
Very keen observation by all who made note of that little micro story. We will be just fine. Most likely better than ever with the vacuum gone.

Absolutely agree.

Our previous Wr core was built for the ‘Romo Era’ and it wasn’t conducive to Daks style of play. That’s not a knock on Dak by any means. Romo was a polished veteran. Dak was only in his sophomore season last year and is refining his skills as expected.

As far as the 2017 receivers go.. the fact is:
  • Dez- his poor route running is well known and leading the league in drops didn’t help. His best attribute was being a physical WR, the “50-50” ball, and being an emotional leader (sometimes to a fault). His skills wasn’t a great fit for a young QB that’s known for protecting the ball (with accuracy issues at times), but’s there’s not a doubt in my mind that Dez could return to his 2014 form under a established veterans QB like Rodgers, Brees, etc..
  • Williams- also well known body catcher that didn’t create much separation as he’s not considered a ‘burner’. Yet, he found holes in the secondary when plays broke down and Dak scrambling. All it took was an slightly above average CB to take him out of games.
  • Beasley- again, not a burner.. but he was the one Wr you could count on to create space with his quickness. Defenses figured it and out and started doubling him up. This was made easier since Beasley was only a threat for ab 10-15 yards down field.
  • “Gold Jacket” Witten- as good as he was, no defense was worried ab his speed. He boxed defenders out like no other, timing of throws was critical
At the end of the day, defenses figured out how to shut down our WRs due largely bc of our on limitations, in short.. we were predictable. This is how I invision a DC talking right before the game..

“Put our best Cb on Dez and shade S coverage to prevent the jump ball. Play Williams straight up and see if he can beat us. We’ll use our best coverage LB to help over the top with Beasley and put the most physical secondary player on Witten”

Whether people like our rebuilt core or not, the truth is.. defenses will have to throw the old D playbook out and try to figure out who to cover from week to week. We’ve added a bunch of speed & polished route runners that’s more indicative to Daks game. He’ll be throwing to who ever gets open. And that’s harder to scheme against than what we rolled out there last year.

I know a lot of folks don’t like Scott Linehan “predictable” play calling, but it makes me wonder that he was limited also due to each players limitations. I personally believe, we’re going to see a “revised” look on offense. Of course, not totally different bc we are still a run first team. Hopefully our OL will reclaim thier top status and we’ll have Zeke without suspension ready to prove a point. I really like our Offense. I won’t guess how good they’ll be, but they will be good nonetheless.
Wow. Great post. Some won't listen though.

Seems like all our recievers had a down year last season..all at the same time!, yet nobody around here wants to put any of that responsibility on the guy who touches the ball on every offensive snap.
Yeah.... No one wants to put any of that blame on an absent Tyron Smith or an effervescent running of the bulls with Chaz Green either...... Amazing

No because Romo would have been smart enough to see the problem and he would have set the protections better by giving the LT help all game long from a TE, even if the coaching staff wasn't doing it. Our left tackles that game were absolutely horrible but Dak didn't really do much to help himself either
Yes. Romo is God. He led us to several Super Bowls. We know.
