I mean, that's pretty much how it works in the NFL. Three of the final four QB's are on rookie deals, and other one is the future GOAT.
You need to win in this league before you pay your QB.
Plenty of this said it at the time too. 100% I think the rest of the league has woken up to the fact that you either need a) rookie QB that allows you to fill the skill positions around him or b) a proven performer that is worth the $$.
Some might argue that Stafford is an example of a mid range guy 'doing enough' to get a ring.. but I would say that he had reliably and consistently shown that he elevated the team around him.
My big issue with Dak.. and especially with us 'paying' Dak.. was that he has never actually shown he is a good QB. It is worth saying again.. 2016 he walked into a dream job and had Zeke rushing for 100+ every game.. we were dominant. 2017 he struggled - receivers blamed, 2018 - we gave up a heap to get a better receiving core.. he was inconsistent.. zeke was still rushing significant totals, we blamed coaching.. he gave up INT in the playoffs, 2019 - he was inconsistent going from literal 'perfect' games to games with a passer rating in the 60s. We never could get any momentum.. and Dak struggling without a truly dominant run game.
2020 we tag him.. he gets injured..
2021 we give him the monster contract before he has even thrown a ball.
The dude literally got one of the biggest paydays in league history.. with a record of exactly two wildcard play off wins.. after coming off a season in which he didn't play. I mean you couldn't make this stuff up.
It was crazy then and it has been proven to be crazy now. Sheer stupidity. And for those just 'waking up' to the Dak reality.. and thinking he has 'fallen away'.. he hasn't fallen away.. the problem is that he was never that good to start with. He walked into a crazy good squad and used his limited talents to beat up on weak opponents in a mostly weak division. As soon as there was ever a challenge.. he folded like a cheap suit.
The rest of the league knows this.. you simply can not overpay for the likes of Dak, Cousins.. and even Carr coming on the market.. same thing.. buyer beware.
