I wasn't necessarily totally for or against signing Dak this offseason. What I struggle with is how Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb thought signing Dak yesterday was a smart football move when there is no need from a cap perspective or a football perspective. 6 months ago? Definitely. 6 months from now? Yes. Yesterday?

It will be interesting to see the details. I wonder if his existing non-guaranteed $29M base salary this year is part of the $231M guaranteed after converting to a SB, RB or guaranteed base.
Maybe they thought it would be a bigger media splash if they announced it right before the first game?

Jerry likes the attention.

other than the 2025 cap hit, I think it’s a good deal for Dallas.

it gives us at least two more seasons of Dak drama. 8)

They can post June 1 cut Dak in 2026 or 2027.

spotrac has the numbers listed.
Probably no chance of that happening. Dak is set up for an $89M cap hit next year, they will for sure be kicking some money into the void years after this season. Theyll be forced to restructure the deal to a point where he is nearly uncuttable unless he goes on a full Russell Wilson style decline.

POST-6/1 RELEASE

2026 Dead Cap: $28,005,000
2027 Dead Cap: $34,000,000
2026 Savings: $40,000,000

This is the same situation we had before the new extension.

Instead of costing Dallas $52 million in dead money, it would now cost $62 million.

But they can still bail.

They give Dak another chance. He has to win in 2024-25, or they can cut him.

I didnt like the extension at first. But after looking at the numbers, it's not so bad.

Dallas was going to pay Dak in 2024 no matter what. They've actually lowered his 2024 cap hit some.

2025 stinks. The cap his is huge. $89+ million.

But after that, they can post June 1 cut him in 2026 [which would be in March 2026. before anything gets GTD.]

This is smart. It gives Jerry an out and it gives Lance more time to develop.

These early cuts are unlikely with huge deals because once you start restructuring to reduce cap hits, the dead money goes way up. So, what you are suggesting would require two things and either would probably kill it as a possibility. The first and biggest issue is we don't reduce his $89M cap hit for 2025 (because if we do that ups the dead money if released in 2026). The second is even if we cut him pre-6/1 in 2026, we still designate him a post 6/1 cut in your scenario which means we carry his $68M cap hit until 6/1 and through the free agency period. Lastly and this is just opinion, Dak is a good QB. It's one thing to not re-sign a QB because he craps the bed in the postseason every year, it's another entirely to cut him. I don't see that happening. Dak may just be the last Cowboys QB that Jerry sees in his lifetime so I hope he chose wisely

Players like DLaw and Martin will be off the books by this time. As rookies and 2nd and 3rd year players will be less against the cap.

As of right now that’s accurate, but I would imagine they will kick some money into future years which would change those numbers. I just can’t see them taking an $89m hit for Dak next season. We will have to reevaluate this a year from now.

Am I reading the media reports on the contract correctly?

i.e. it is essentially a 1 year extension (2025) followed by 3 x 1 year unguaranteed options, where the Cowboys dont need to decide until after the draft in the 3 x option years?

Too many people putting their frustration and hate on the wrong person, this team hasn't won anything for a couple decades before Dak got here. If anything direct that energy at the person making the decisions.
i'm pretty sure they're putting it on the right person, his initials are MC lol

So I am guessing the hate brigade will turn their attention to Parsons next. Let’s trade Parsons to Houston for two number 1s
seems that way. i wouldve thought his performance sunday would quiet the chirping, but these guys are miserable.

On a side note...no Dallas player is ready to give up the money Jerry has given him.

Thank goodness - it’s about time! I lost a wager and was exiled to this board posing as a Cowboys fan only permitted to leave once THIS deal was completed! What can I say, I have questionable friends.

All you need to know regarding which side of the fence you should have been on pertaining to a Dak “deal/no deal” is that we in Philly are loudly applauding this contract extension. If we can’t win it, all that counts is that the hated COWBOYS CAN’T either!! Now it’s a done deal.

From all of us, a heartfelt thank you to the Jones family for removing a Dallas threat for years to come. May your ineptitude live on and be passed along for generations.

Gotta admit, I’m slightly disappointed I was never called out as a poser or fake fan. Lot of you seem to be surprisingly good folks that just root for the wrong team, and I wish you guys good luck through the regular season. Being real though, outside of this forum, it’s common knowledge that that is all you have.

Take care and be well!!
lol at this long self indulgent farewell. hope you weren't expecting anyone to care. for the record, i'd never be able to stomach pretending to be an eagles fan.

Dak should be thanking Shedeur Sanders Big Time for his new $240M contract! Guaranteed Jerry caught Shedeur’s press conference after getting his butt kicked by Nebraska, calling out his OL etc and accepting zero blame. Jerry told Stephen Let’s get this done with Dak NOW!!

All that is guaranteed. They are not cutting him and then paying him ~$100M after the fact.
