If that happens, then you have trade bait Look for the positive
There’s not much of a positive using a second round pick on a player that ends up trade bait. We may not even get a second round pick in return.

Both Stephens and Hendershot are not blocking TEs . . . You know this. . . Even Kincaid is in that mold

I stated Schoon will be the Most Complete TE . . . No other TE has his blocking Ability and His Receiving Skills were under utilized in college

We are blessed to have him and Fergy on the Team . . . Nothing to ***** and complain about

Fergy might be in for a big year. Makes the scoon pick even more head scratching.
I liked Ferguson coming out of college all along, and that alone made me question the Schoonmaker pick. Dallas essentially drafted the same guy two years in a row.
I can see why people question the Schoon pick, but...

There is a video with cut-ups of Schoonmaker's blocking that is incredible for anybody that likes to study blockers.

It's all about precision. Blocking angles, awareness, technique and more powerful than his height/weight might suggest.

Add to that his RAS was the 16th best for a TE since 1989...

Think about Zack Martin vs Larry Allen.
ZM is a future HoFer because he is one of the most fundamentally sound players ever.

ZM is very strong but never in the Tyler Smith category of physical freak that can stand flat-footed and toss Vita Vea to the ground.

LA didn't bother with technique...

Fans want the brute strength TE.

Coaches want the best overall blocker.

I am with you. Even going into the draft. All the TE talk started. I thought it was one of the few positions we had no need at.

The Cowboys openly discussed the prospect of drafting an Olinemen when they chose to draft Mazi Smith. The discussion they had was that any Olineman they drafted would come in as a back-up player, and Mazi Smith would come in to start. That didn't magically change between the round 1 pick and the round 2 pick. Also, O'Cyrus Torrance was likely not even on their minds as a potential 2nd round pick, because the Cowboys don't draft college guards.
Yep that's all true. Additionally, Solari on draft day told the guys on the draft coverage that they are looking for "athletic" offensive linemen.

So explain going for a TE in the second when there are much higher priorities
The Cowboys still need TWO blocking tight ends, and Hendershot offers nothing with blocking. McKeon is not a route runner. Stephens may eventually grow into a blocker, but at this point, he's still just a receiver. Schoonmaker can both block and pass. It's still a good pick.
This is a perfect explanation. The Cowboys wanted to improve their blocking. This was talked about all after the draft by multiple people. Their top priorities were stopping the run and improve the blocking. Done.

Just because you feel there were higher priorities that doesn't mean the Cowboys did.

Most teams don’t use second round picks on blocking TE’s. They’re usually looking for a dynamic receiving threat. When you lose your starting tight end to free agency you’re trying to replace them. Most of the fans here weren’t happy with the Schoonmaker pick, including myself and even some who cover the draft didn’t like the pick. Right now he’s being outplayed by Ferguson and a rookie undrafted free agent. Schoonmaker may end up being a terrific player, but battling plantar fasciitis is probably going to make his rookie season a tough one. If he doesn’t do much this season and Ferguson continues to impress, a lot of fans are going to hate the pick even more. It’s not like the Cowboys have had a lot of luck with second round picks the past decade.

Because they didn't understand the reasoning and Cowboys thinking for the pick.

It doesn't matter how many people liked or didn't like the pick.
They understood the reasoning for the pick. TE was one of our needs. We lost Dalton Schultz in free agency, but a lot of people didn’t see Schoonmaker as a great receiving TE and that’s usually what teams are looking for with a TE in the second round. Dak uses his TE as a security blanket.

IF all he was is a blocking TE, then I would agree with you.

Being outplayed by ferguson? He just got to the team a week ago. LOL

Now Im disappointed too, but you sound like a hater using ill logic and making things up to promote your agenda.

I wanted the guard, but I understand why they took Shoonmaker and what they are trying to accomplish with that pick.

doesnt mean I agree with it, but I understand it.

That isn't what the Cowboys did.
That seems to be with some fans think. They keep talking about Schoonmaker’s blocking. He’s a complete TE but I’m not sure how good a receiver he’s going to be. That’s the number one thing I’m looking for if I’m taking a TE in the second round. If I need a blocking TE I’ll look later in the draft. In the second round I’m looking for a playmaker in the Kelce, George Kittle mold. We have a long way to go with Schoonmaker, we’ll see how it plays out with him.

Do not waste your time with your obvious logic as it will only result in being personally attacked. Let them celebrate a soon to be 25-year old rookie 2nd round TE who missed most of camp with a foot injury for him and his 54 catches for 637 yards and 7 td's in 5 years at Michigan (1 redshirt year and only became the #1 TE his senior season due to an injury to the #1 TE) because Dallas needed a blocking TE.

As I read this I like the Schoon pick. Then I don’t. Then I do…
Think about the fact that it's his rookie year, so when it comes time to write up a big contract for one of the other TEs, we might have some leverage.

That's fair. The Cowboys clearly disagree. They wanted to improve the blocking AND they wanted a receiving TE to replace Schultz. The best one they wanted was right there so they took him.
