Dak Prescott on Cowboys second-year TE Jake Ferguson

rookie 2nd round TE who missed most of camp with a foot injury for him and his 54 catches for 637 yards and 7 td's in 5 years at Michigan (1 redshirt year and only became the #1 TE his senior season due to an injury to the #1 TE) because Dallas needed a blocking TE.
Oh brother. Talk about not understanding the situation at Michigan!

And his missed most of camp with a foot injury. He is out there now!

And he isn't just a blocking TE.

Sometimes the Cowboys overdraft/sign a position while ignoring others (Kicker, Guard, etc). They didn't need Schoon, who I think will end up a good TE. They have two young guys and a veteran backup already, plus this year another young guy who performed well in the first preseason game and has some promise. Didn't need Schoon, but they are going to keep him b/c of the high draft pick, and either he sits the bench or another good TE does. Unless they run a lot of 3 TE sets or have a couple of injuries along the way, the TE room is going to be pretty heavy.

Of course, I don't understand because you disagree with my take but no worries.

Of notes I found:

"Schoonmaker’s receiving production was underwhelming, to say the least. He was never viewed as a priority in Michigan’s passing attack. Only one season of over 200 yards receiving leaves a lot to be desired regarding his receiving potential."

"Schoonmaker would fit best in a vertical system that can also find use him as a blocker, a la Kellen Moore's offense."

"Schoonmaker was a steady TE2 behind TE1 Erick All for the Wolverines in 2021 — 17 receptions for 165 yards and three touchdowns. He started the 2022 season in the same situation, a TE2 behind All, but All went out early in the year with a season ending injury and Schoonmaker became the No. 1 TE."

Michigan doesn't run a pro style offense. It's run run run then run some more. Schoon still had the 2nd most stats on the team. He had ZERO chance to put up any kind of receiving stats what so ever. That's all I was talking about. All good sir!

There’s not much of a positive using a second round pick on a player that ends up trade bait. We may not even get a second round pick in return.
I get that. Trying to look at any positive for the situation. But I agree. Wasn’t a big fan of the pick. We had other areas that needed to be addressed . And I’m a big fan of Ferguson I feel/felt Ferguson is gonna be a really good / top TE

I see Ferguson as a MUCH more athletic Schultz…and a better blocker to boot.
Agree,... he will actually be better than Schultz....good thing Jerry didn't lose his mind and give him a big contract. Schoon may turn out better himself if his foot problem doesn't doom him. I think its called plantar peanutitus.

I said only once as in today, we might have been better off using that pick on the OL. We could have used it on another position. Click the link and see how many fans didn’t like the pick.

I wanted us to draft an RB early. I know we needed depth at guard for when something happens to Tyron, but I felt like we at least had our starting five there for as long as he can go. At running back, we have our starter, but you need at least one back to share the load.

Kendre Miller would have probably been my pick ... maybe with a slight trade down. I will say I'm happy with what we are seeing from Vaughn, though, and hope he can keep it up, and Miller did not have a good outing in his first preseason game and is battling an injury. So what do I know?

I didn’t want an RB early, but earlier than we drafted one.

I figured we've got to make a tough decision with Pollard next year, so if we found his replacement, then we can avoid the second contract. Get a back in the first three rounds and then rinse and repeat next year. I was interested in Robinson or Gibbs if they fell in the first, but I'm glad they didn't since we drafted our first first-round DT in three decades.

Beautifully described
It was a fugly pick and easy to dog but as everything works out in TC (including Schoo finally getting healthy!) you can see the reasonings.

Good stuff from Jumbo on the draft analysis.

I would have gone Robinson had he been there because he was just too good to pass up where we were picking. Most had him rated as a top-five pick. However, I wouldn’t have gone with Gibbs. I don’t think Pollard is going to be back, regardless of what type of season he has this year, unless he agrees to a team friendly deal. He’s starting to get some mileage on him and the Cowboys are done paying big contracts to RBs. I’ll worry about RB next season if the three younger backs don’t provide much.

I agree with him likely not being back unless it's a very team friendly deal. But he isn't getting any mileage on him at all. In his 4 year career he has 510-2616 rushing and 121-1008 receiving and 1500 more return yards. That's 5124 all purpose yards and he didn't have any return yards last year and probably won't ever again. Without the return yards he only has 3624 total yards. In 4 years.

Not when OL was the bigger need. Or RB for that matter. They panicked. Again. Because they wanted TE in the first and went for it in the second. Not the first time they’ve panicked. Look at the kelvin Joseph pick.
Look at their roster. It is awesome.

It doesn't really matter. They have an awesome roster and you aren't going to hit on every pick.
