It’s not comparing him to average it’s comparing him to what other quarterbacks do to gauge how good he realistically is suppose to be. We can sit here and say he needs to put up 300 yards and 3 touchdowns but if no one else doing it then that shouldn’t be the floor or the bar.

This is fair. But comparing him to how a top 10 defense fares on average isn't the answer..not even close

    Are you serious?
Dak racks up stats vs a prevent defense because he was so bad early in the games that the opponents ran up a big lead,
And you want to say those games were close?
We all saw him choke. Go back and watch some of his college film and you'll see him struggle against any team that wasn't a bottom feeder, as well.
The fact that the Cowboys won 13 games with him as quarterback in 2016 is more evidence of how bad Jason Garrett coached.
The Cowboys were loaded so much that they won 13 games with Dak. With a real quarterback and head coach they would have probably been undefeated in 2016 and won the Super Bowl.

That's what this comparison is..dak vs how top 10 defenses fare on average from last year vs opposing qbs

Not to mention this is only passing yards per game...but that's a separate topic

Ran up a big lead? They lost two games by 10 and 11 points. Everything else they lost by less than 7....what games are you referring to? I need to do some research.

It’s not a great a way to gauge but I think this was in response to the other thread Williebeamen made.

Well according to the other thread with the Fisher tweet, Dallas has a contract on the table making Dak the highest paid playing in the history of the entire league.

If I am making my QB the highest paid player in the league, I expect a little bit better numbers than these.

I also expect to be better than 8-8.

    Yes, you do.
The Cowboys were so far behind that the opposing defenses coasted and allowed them to score until they got a little closer. Then they shut Dak down again when they needed to.
As Jerry Jones said in Chicago after that loss- the game wasn't as close as the score.

Conditions were crap in that game and Brady Almighty didn't do diddley either.

With the weather negating the passing game, the conditions actually favored us, but we still passed more than we ran, and Dak only ran once.

4 or 5 games were lost through bad coaching. Garrett *so* desired to be fired.

It's weird to look at passing yards as the best metric here. Passer rating correlates far more closely with winning and, whatever its flaws, is surely superior to passing yardage as a measure of overall QB performance.

Dak doesn't compare as favourably to the average when looking at passer rating:

Dak's passer rating vs top 10 defenses compared to their season average passer rating allowed:

80.7 Avg Allowed Buffalo Bills (86.2 on the road, as they were against Dallas)
    91.8 vs Buffalo Bills

85.2 Avg Allowed Chicago Bears (89.4 at home, as they were against Dallas)
    83.2 Dak vs Chicago Bears

82.8 Avg Allowed Green Bay Packers (80.1 on the road, as they were against Dallas)
83.8 Dak vs Green Bay Packers

86.4 Avg Allowed Minnesota Vikings (93.2 on the road, as they were against Dallas)
    101.4 Dak vs Minnesota Vikings

62.8 Avg Allowed New England Patriots (72.6 at home, as they were against Dallas)
64.2 Dak vs New England Patriots

So basically Dak performed right around the average, maybe slightly above average (though not by much, especially if you start looking at home/away splits), against the Top 10 defenses he faced. Looking at the yardage totals gives the false impression that he performed well above average. Based on this analysis, we have an average to slightly above average QB who wants to be paid like a top performer.
