They need to make progress with players learning this defense even if they don't have enough overall talent now to be good.
Aldon Smith appears to understand Nolan's front 7 concepts better than most of the other players.
There is value to keeping that type of player. More value than a conditional 7th round pick.
They'll probably re-sign Smith for next year.
If they can find other players (Randy Gregory, etc.) at that position for next year and reduce Aldon Smith from 80+ percent of the snaps down to around 50% then he can be a good player in that role.
I cant seeing Aldon coming back. Seattle have shown some kind of interest and as @kskboys says we dont have the money to compete with them, especially as we'll have Gregory and Lawrence and any spare cash for FA's will be needed for starting: safeties/LB and DT's....there's not much left for us to improve part-time starters
