Damn, I was just thinking about that the other day. I saw it when he was just a rookie. They had to push weighted sleds so far, run through the tires, swing across monkey bars, climb walls etc. Not only did Sapp win the whole thing but he won it going away. There were literally running backs in the competition and Sapp was more nimble than they were.

Maybe the best athlete that I ever saw for a DT.

He definitely doesn't fit the mold of a heavy run stopping DT, that's for sure. He weighed well under 300 when he came into the league, and even if he did weigh up around 320, he was always the athletic 3-tech DT. If Marinelli had Sapp now, he certainly wouldn't want him to gain weight and try to get fat. Marinelli just doesn't like fat guys. Sapp getting a little bit of a pot belly didn't do a damn thing to help his game. When he did get heavy, he just looked fat.

If he got 10 sacks at 320, he would have probably gotten 15 at 305.

As Quest said, 16 1/2 sacks at 330 in 2000. that's what we could use !!!

People still don't understand this defense...

Its not that we don't understand, the whole premise of this thread is that we are light and may get pushed around in the run game. We/I understand that Marinelli wants quick penetrating guys. Just saying because every guy on our line gives up 15 -20 lbs to the OL, we may get run over when teams play smash mouth against us. Like our OL is going to do to every one else.
Whats not to understand ?

That's why linebackers and cornerbacks who cant tackle are important in the tampa 2 defense. This defense has always been about light disruptive linemen.

The only time Sapp got his weight up is when he was with the Raiders and they played him at NT in a 3-4. I don't think that last long either. He hated it.

This forum is great proof of how people get ideas stuck in their head and how they want things to be a certain way even if that isn't how they work...

Actually explains a lot of things about life in general.

Marinelli makes up for the lighter poundage of his d-linemen by having an ample supplly of fresh bodies to send into the fray. He'll keep a large contingent of them available, which should, in turn, enable them to remain relatively more energetic throughout the entire game. Not such a bad idea, when you think about it.

They literally don't care about the scheme Marinelli is trying to run. They just like the concept of a road grader nose tackle, even if that player is a liability because they can't rush the passer, which is what is needed in this scheme.

8 defensive linemen who can rush the passer smacking in the the offensive line all game like waves hitting rocks.

In 2012, Marinelli's Bears defense led the league with 44 takeaways...was #1 in defensive TD's & top 3 in scoring D...and ranked top 10 in sacks & vs. the run. The starting DT's were Stephen Paea (6-1/300), and Henry Melton (6-3/290).

Where does Hayden fit in that scenario?

Who is they? Those running the defense have their own concept how to make it work. Let's give them a chance to install something to their liking before jumping to conclusions.

I'm not certain you can call this a Tampa 2 which very few defense run anymore. We run multiple defenses like most teams. We don't always run an over/under D with our linemen in the gaps. We will run two gaps at times even if only 1 tackle. That is why I list players as 1/3 or 3/1 etc. We run hybrid gaps with shoots, shoots and hold etc. We run multiple fronts like most teams.

In fact our 'base' defense is probably some form of a Nickel depending on the terminology you use.

Whether you want to call them hybrids or not is personal preference. We run multiple looks and sets with multiple keys from players affecting the precalls.

Marinelli actually likes Hayden's fit in this scheme. He likes his motor and his agility. Is he the premier pass rusher on the line or is his position at the 1 the premier position to rush the passer? Certainly not, but as I've said in the past I would not be surprised to see him supplanted by McClain if he is healthy. I also wouldn't be surprised if the potential below Hayden pushes him off the roster completely. You have Whaley, Coleman, and Bishop all trying to come up. Certainly shouldn't overlook them and they didn't exactly invest in Hayden.

In looking at the Dallas Cowboys .com web site, I was looking at the roster rundowns and noticed that now that Brent has retired - our heaviest DT is Bishop at 305 lbs. Everyone else is at 300 or under ! Then you look at all our OT and they are all 315 plus. So my question is, where is the beef ?
Also, they list Brinkley at 275 for a LBer ?
Bishop - 305
Hayden - 303
Coleman - 300
Crawford - 285
McClain - 300
Whaley - 272
We are looking a little light up front .....

But that is our very good OL...what are other teams, and more specifically the NFC East teams, not as good OL weights.
