Whaley is actually closer to 300 than he is to 270 these days. But I share your concern. Marinelli likes his 1 techs to be able to play 3 tech, and vice versa. But for Cowboys DL to become elite, a true monster in the middle is required IMO. Would love for Jerry to burn his 2016 first on a 330 pound Tasmanian Devil like Danny Shelton, but its not going to happen.

Leonard Williams was the first guy in 10 years at the combine to run a sub 5.0 and weigh in at 300+. Those guys are rare talents. Shelton is a big guy but I think you can find guys like him more than you can find the LW's.

This forum is great proof of how people get ideas stuck in their head and how they want things to be a certain way even if that isn't how they work...

Actually explains a lot of things about life in general.

This post is a great example of how people over exaggerate and assume things to be so simply by reading a few headlines.

That's why linebackers and cornerbacks who cant can tackle are important in the tampa 2 defense. This defense has always been about light disruptive linemen.

....my kingdom for better grammar...

And please, give me a list of all the teams that don't think that its important for their linebackers and corners to tackle.

Until the "Rushmen" concept actually results in sacks and proves it can stop the run - neither of which they did last year - then this novel concept of ignoring size in favor of speed is just that...novel.

if the key was to get guys who weigh 335 they could hang out at Old Country Buffet.

I'm willing to give the defensive staff the opportunity to put their preferences into place. They haven't had the opportunity to exactly make premium choices as yet. If the ones selected fail to run-plug as necessary, change should follow. I'd take a good, strong 300-lb well-conditioned DT just as soon as a 330-lb lardbucket most any day. Our defensive staff is only beginning to get its prefered line in order. Maybe just a bit more patience is in order here. I'll be dutifully obliged to join the ranks of the discontented if they fail to play the run better in 2015.

Agreed as usual here...and beings that is but year two of the Marinelli time as defensive coordinator, I would even give him a strong one maybe two seasons to get his perspective on the field, fully.

Starting right now, there are quite a few defensive linemen and offensive linemen who are being focused upon as to a top 50 for next season's draft. Defensive tackles are looking good at this point of that process.

Agreed. The defensive line on this team had been neglected long enough for stagnancy to be well established. Normally, two or three years isn't that much to ask for effective transition to fully occur. Marinelli's no magician.

Apologies for late night typos. In different schemes it is more important for players to have certain attributes than in other schemes.

In Marinneli's scheme it is important for the front 4 to get pressure without blitzing. It is also important for the back 7 to be able to tackle especially well to make up for the lack of size of the line. Rushmen concept isn't new and has been used in Tampa 2 systems for some time.

Having a big dominant run stuffing nose guard is the only thing missing to complete this line. We will probably get bye without one but unless T McClain beasts this year that will likely be the achillies of this defense...

It's a very thin position. Worried about the team against the run. Maybe a guy like Red Bryant could help at the 1 tech.

Uh Dallas had the 8th ranked rushing defense last year does that prove anything for you?

Really? Please go back and read the countless other threads on this. If you are using the total rush yards per game, then yes. Does that stat indicate even remotely how good the rush defense was, then no.

LW and DS play completely different roles. One is a pass sushing DL and other is a NT. Further, the 40 is not the best gauge to evaluate nose tackles. Shelton's agility, strength and motor are off the charts for his size. And Shelton is almost 40 lbs larger than Williams.

Remember Parcells planet theory?
