Say what you want-- but this D is better than what we fielded in 2014-- even along the DL. We came up 2 plays short in GB from going to the NFCC game. IMO-- this offense is good enough to protect the shortcomings of the D and that gives them a puncher's chance in the playoffs.

The last great offense that won the SB with a suspect D was Indianapolis with Manning. We are more physical than that team, with a much better ground game. It can be done-- although certainly not easy. I would give us a better shot in 2017 after another draft and free agency haul shores up the D even more.
Don't want to get in a back and forth with you. I don't want to even talk stats. Been at this a long time...and my EYES don't lie. This defense is bad. And the further we go....the more it will show. We are hanging by a thread at LBer. Lee goes down....LBers will go to **it. The secondary is decent...but if Claiborne goes down....CBers wil go to **it. DL is awful...with a gimpy Lawrence viewed as the Savior. I love my Cowboys. It wish it were not true. But this is a BAD DEFENSE.

Honestly, this is a nice problem to have. Think of the early Quincy years. We had nobody who could play the position worth a crap.

If we are starting a new era, I want a new coach. I just don't think Garrett has what it takes to win a Super Bowl. If we got to a Super Bowl, he would out think himself right out of a win.

Also, getting out of his contract to build a great defense just seems like a sound decision. We won't build a defense good enough to get a ring with Romo, and it PISSES me off Garrett wasted a huge chunk of his career trying to learn how to coach.
You may as well hope the sun doesn't come up, cause that's just about as likely. Garret's here for a while

There's way too much football left to play yet this year for there to be an intelligent answer to this question. If Tony comes back, stays healthy, and plays like he usually does, I think there's very little chance they cut him or move him unless somebody knocks their socks off.

No matter what, though, Tony's career in Dallas probably doesn't extend past the end of next season at this point, and it could be a lot shorter if he gets hurt again or does not play up to his usual level. That's what happens when you have more than one good QB on the roster.

This is exactly the way I think it'll play out.

With Romo's age, declining skills, and deteriorating body, this will take care of itself. Dak is now

Lets see what Dak does against playoff quality teams like the Bengals and Packers before we draw up Romo's release papers.

Totally agree. If Romo was 100% healthy and could take a shot from a defender without breaking his back, then the question is moot. But Romo's body can't handle it anymore. We can't be held hostage to Romo's health and salary. $30 mil for someone to stand on the sidelines is insane.

Going to be a sad day when we move on from 9 :(

for sure, he's a great player and great person. For many years he made the Cowboys worth watching.
However, if we could trade him and get some picks in return plus use the cap money to add some pieces we might be able to field a defense capable of winning a championship, and not just one. The hawks have had a luxury coup by having their starting QB on a rookie salary for several years when most decent starting QBs (and some that aren't decent) swallow $12-20 million of cap space....which equates to not one but at least TWO pro-bowl caliber defensive free agents or more if you go for more economic options. Even just letting Romo go in a manner where we recoup the cap money would free up a ton of money to acquire some high quality players and we still have an open three year window before we have to pony up a big contract for Dak or apply the franchise tag.
We will also still have zeke for four more years on a rookie contract after this year and over half of the OL locked up (Martin is going to cost us big $ but he isn't going anywhere).
In the bigger scheme of things, we have the opportunity to really build a fantastic roster that can compete for championships for many years if we play our cards right. As much as i would really hate to see Romo leave town, esp without a ring, it could propel us into championship contention for years to come. I think most of us hated to see Herschel go back in the day for a lot of the same reasons....but man it was worth it.

Fair enough... not going to get into it either. Just one question: Is this defense worse than 2014? If so-- which positions?

At the rate that Dak is performing, we would be stupid not to move on from Romo in March. Too much money and too big of a distraction having Dak on the sidelines. And while we need the money for defense, we now have to start considering WR as well as Dez is having injury issues and is a big contract.

I wouldn't doubt this could happen. Romo is a great QB but it may be time to move on to Dak and let him be the guy starting next year. Get a deal for Romo maybe a few draft picks while we can.

Why are so many dismissing this idea? I love Romo as much as anyone, but the Colts moved on from Peyton, and Romo is not Peyton.

Yep if a team gives say a 2nd and 3rd/4th round pick for Romo I would take it. Cleveland Browns may be stupid enough to give a 1st rounder for Romo.

Dak's play and Romo's age and injuries have already made his job much less secure.

Of course. No one is arguing that point. I'm a huge Dak proponent, and he is making the call a lot closer than anyone expected and he might make it even harder if he continues to improve. He isn't near as dangerous to a defense as Romo is, but better ball protection helps close that gap some.

But let's also be real here. Dak is going to have to open it up at some point against more dominant defenses or if he is behind. We have seen a little bit of that and there is no reason to believe he won't be able to do it, we just haven't seen a lot of it. The game plan is more conservative with Dak in the game.

People act like salary is of no consequence in deciding to move on from a player. But that isn't reality. I'm not saying you start a player because his salary is higher, but Romo's salary is a huge factor in "moving on" from him. He would be a really high priced backup (the combined salaries are the same no matter who starts and who sits) but if you start Dak and bench a healthy Romo you have pretty much played the card that you are cutting Romo. That would be a cap crippler for the next two years. That can't just be ignored.

If Dak plays well up to week 8, then I think the answer is clear.

Try to move on from Romo, asap and use that future cap space savings on the O-line and rebuilding the defense.

Because Jerry can't move on. His blind loyalty has been detrimental to this organization. I love the idea of moving on but I don't know if Jerry can pull the trigger.

Jerry wants to win. If he sees that Dak gives up the best chance to do that, then he'll move on from Romo. He did it with Ware (aging players with injuries, big contract) and he'll do it with Romo.

I want to believe that but my gut says different. I hope your right, but time will tell.
