They wait until Saturday to release players because it makes it harder for other teams to claim them.

Yeah all 32 teams are active today, remember Sunday doesn't count so maybe Monday after the claim window closes we can bring him back.

I like DT McClain. He is the perfect backup. He contributes blocking on KR and is very good at punt rush in addition to solid rotation snaps. He 'plays the right way' all out every snap in the rotation or on teams.

It's well documented how Marinelli likes Hayden and I get the feeling that he uses him as a standard for effort if not for ability. They use training methods to encourage maximum effort akin to what the military does so I appreciate Hayden being on the team in that context even if I hate how he gets washed on single blocks all too often.

I'm with you I would have released one of the inactive OT.

Yeah. We've got a lot of guys with similar abilities along the DL. It makes it hard to decide which ones to keep and which ones to expose. Either way, we've got to add players to that unit in the offseason with more significant talent, so I guess it doesn't matter all that much for the long term when the guys we've got now are mostly contributor-types with some upside. We'll probably bring in two DLs in the offseason (though at least one of them will almost certainly fit in that Spencer/Selvie role). Maybe the best thing is to get the young guys (Coleman, Bishop, and even Gardener) stashed and to replace one of the DE vets with a first or second round pick again. If Brent pans out and we like the Crawfords inside, the other spot is really a replacement for Melton if we decide to let him walk. Then Safety and whatever LB replacement you need if you let both Carter and Durant walk (though I think we keep Durant). CB, I guess, if we release Carr.

Anyway, point is, we've got a lot of middling players who try hard, everywhere on defense. I guess we can kind of pick our shots as to where it's easiest to significantly upgrade. I still hate exposing a promising rookie DL to waivers this time of year.

So...you were looking forward to Coleman hopefully starting on the defensive line one day?

LOL....wow.

Yes, that's what 'has the potential to be a starter in a year or two' means, Risen.

Strangely, I hope all of our players live up to whatever early potential they might show. This is a league where UDFA are actually able to develop into long-term starters if they have talent and are willing to put in the work. And we're a defense that needs a lot of help along the line.

Whatever in the world could you possibly find funny about that? Or were you just looking forward to him *not* potentially starting on the defensive line one day?

It's sad to see our desperate fan base talk about a bunch of stiffs like this.

They released Coleman?! They must like Jack Crawford!

We probably had similar discussions about Ron Leary back when you wanted to spend $60M for a FA OG. I don't really remember. Or about Tryone Crawford at one point where you thought he was a JAG and I thought he had a lot of potential. I'd look it up if I were more interested in your previous takes.

Either way, there's absolutely nothing sad about fans hoping for the best from young players. Or about the team liking one player more than another when they make a personnel decision.

I can't say the same thing about your desperate reaction to the discussion about it on a team message board, though. What are you trying to spin? I liked a rookie DL prospect. Better than I liked a couple young OTs we kept on the roster over him. You apparently don't. Ok. I can live with that just fine.

Yeah, I hope Coleman slides through to the PS.

Coleman came on the scene one season too late... if this was 2013, he'd probably have a couple hundred snaps in the hopper.

The Cowboys have done a remarkable job at remaking the DT position (outside of one guy ).

If they could get a wee-bit of that magic at the DE spot during the coming offseason and the DL could be in nice shape come next season.

Knew we needed to bring Pellerin up, but I'm not sure it made sense to risk Coleman to waivers when we're still carrying an extra offensive tackle.

I wonder if it had anything to do with Hills having a guaranteed salary as a vet?

If the team was high Coleman be wouldn't be in this situation. Another avg player

Yeah, we're so desperate sitting here at 7-3.

Have you heard of "developing" a player before?

I don't understand the negativity either.

Coleman showed a terrific first step which isn't something that can be taught. I hope he makes it to the PS.

What I find funny in that is that you felt that ham and egger was potentially a future starter.

But hey, I'm talking to a guy who had to wait and see on Phil Costa and David Arkin, so....

You, not me, actually had discussions like that about Phil Costa, David Arkin, Bill Nagy and that collection of complete stiffs the Cowboys had to flush before acquiring real talent.

I don't care if they keep Coleman or release him. Jack Crawford too. Even Jeremy Mincey and the legendary Nick Hayden. They won't be around the next time the Cowboys actually have a good DL.

I am not happy that the team released Coleman who I think could be a very disruptive 1 tech in the near future. As a matter of fact, I think at this point he should be getting more reps on the team than T.McClain who is already proven himself to be a mediocre player. I think Coleman is a better player right now than McClain but for some reason, coaches overvalue experience.

We're all in awe of your ability to be absolutely certain about a player before ever seeing him play a snap of NFL football. Less in awe of your ability to actually be right about the players you're certain about, but, hey, at least you're certain. That's gotta count for something, right?

if you had payed attention in preseason you'd know this guy has absolutely no potential to ever become a starter in this league. He wasn't good at all , he made the team by default.

The hype for this guy was worse than it was for Ben Bass , at least Bass made a couple plays in preseason.

Did anyone pick up Bishop when we cut him? If not, maybe no one picks up Coleman either. I don't think there are many examples of teams making a living off the Cowboys' cuts. Ahmad Dixon didn't do squat. Same with the CB Mitchell.

Untrue. I put very little faith in PFF grades, but at least they had him ranked as the highest-rated rookie interior pass rusher:

If you haven't seen it yet, user @itsaboat also posted these great examples of Coleman's play from the MIA preseason game on another board:

He's #60, for those of you who don't remember early in the season. The spin move on the third play is particularly nice.

I swear. I think some of you guys like to complain about a guy just to complain. We're talking about our DL#8-9 here. Not a starter. Not a probowl player. Just a guy who's worked hard to earn a place on the roster, has a nice first step and a legitimate shot at becoming a DL#4-5 guy next season and an outside shot at developing into a starter with a lot of hard work and a little luck down the road. We're bummed to see him go. That's fine if you guys aren't but we can drop the pretense that anybody has expectations that are in any way out of line with reality when it comes to this rookie DL who has flashed some ability.

EDIT: Note, I'm also a Sun Devil grad, if that offers another reason why I don't like seeing this guy exposed to waivers. That's not why I liked him as prospect, but it's a mark in his favor.

That PFF website is utter garbage don't ever show me that again . Maybe a decent back up someday . Maranelli knows DL better than anyone i trust his judgement .

Granted.

But a lot of players who end up being good are only "average" (or even worse) in their rookie seasons.
true too. But i look at it this way. Dallas is very young at the DT spot. They'll be fine. Once Crawford moved to DT it was only a matter of time before Coleman was gone from the 53
