The Cowboys are trying to fill some holes in a rather thin outside linebacker position. On Tuesday, the club signed Curtis Johnson, a defensive end in the Colts’ 4-3 scheme. But Johnson, who was waived/injured because of a strained hamstring, should be able to convert to a 3-4 outside linebacker.

To make room for Johnson, the Cowboys released guard Greg Isdaner, a rookie free agent from West Virginia.
At 6-3, 237, Johnson fits the mold of the outside backers, but you wonder how much time it will take for him to make transition.
For now, the Cowboys are probably just looking for someone to rush the passer if needed, but more importantly play special teams. In three preseason games, Johnson recorded seven tackles and one sack – all occurring in the second exhibition game against Philadelphia.

Last year, Johnson made the Colts’ team as a rookie free agent from Clark-Atlanta. He played in seven games, recording four tackles and a sack.

Last week, the Cowboys signed Tearrius George, who spent most of the year on the Cowboys’ practice squad. At linebacker, the Cowboys have already lost fourth-round pick Brandon Williams (torn ACL) for the season and third-rounder Jason Williams is out 4-6 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Sixth-round pick Stephen Hodge has played in just one preseason game because of a nagging knee injury.

C Johnson seems like an interesting pick-up. Don't know if he can contribute on Defense right away, but I guess he's an excellent STs candidate (esp if Hodge's knee keeps acting up).

We're really trying to sort out the OLB back-up position - leaving no stone unturned.

On a side note . . . . Brandon Williams' season-ending injury really screwed our plans.

I was rooting for Greg Isdaner but the coaching staff has been high on Travis Bright.

Kind of curious why we pick up a DE who needs to learn how to stand up and cover so close to the season. Maybe our scouts saw something special in him.

Bob said he's real fast and he also was a dominant small college sack artist.

Guess I was wrong on Isdaner. That'll teach me to get my hopes up when Sporting News hypes a player.

Read a couple of good draft profiles on him, but he didn't meet the "hype."

I think I remember being interested in Curtis Johnson last year, so it will be interesting to see what he can do.

no you read some nice reports on him, but the key thing with greg was he had short arms and wasnt overly strong like bright is;

Yea I drank the Isdaner Kool-aid, as well, but I also liked Bright for the same reasons, and it looks like he will at least make PS, so 1 out of 2 ain't so bad.

Bright is very strong, if im correct, bench presses about 500 pounds or something like that, almost as strong as randy white was coming out of college,

Alot of us were high on Johnson in last years draft. He was a sleeper OLB on alot of mocks.

Was supposed to be strong and not very mobile, which, come to think about it, fits this offensive line.

That one report was wrong. Bright is very athletic, there is a video of his combine workout at nfl.com and the guy did great. Big time vj for an OL and was pretty agile and quick for big man.

I wouldn't be so sure on being wrong.

I have a feeling he may yet end up on this team's practice squad.

best i remember reason why he isnt as nimble as he could be, he has a steel rod in his leg, or his leg was broken, something like that;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Offensive Guard | Senior | B.Y.U. Travis Bright
Height: 6-41/4 | Weight: 321 | 40-Time: 5.24

Official Bio

Strengths:
Ideal size and bulk...Strong and powerful...Violent initial punch...Gets a great push in the run game...Stout at the point of attack...Has a killer instinct...Smart and aware..Mature..Hard worker...Lots of experience.

Weaknesses:
Lacks great athleticism...Not real light on his feet...Doesn't always play with proper leverage...Struggles in space and range is limited...Didn't play in a pro style attack...Very stiff...Older than the average prospect.

Notes:
Served a Church mission to Detroit, MI from 2002-2004...Redshirted in 2004...Sat out the 2005 season after suffering a leg injury during fall camp...Started the next three seasons at offensive guard...Named 2nd Team All-MWC as a senior...Earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors three times...Played on the same offensive line as two other legit pro prospects (Ray Feinga & Dallas Reynolds)...Will be a 26-year-old rookie ... Size and top-notch intangibles give him a shot

in other words what he is a big physical man, mauler type, that fits our style on offensive line
