Roy Williams: Why Am I A Target?
Posted by jellis at 5/13/2009 5:44 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

Coachable wide receiver Roy Williams doesn't understand where all this criticism keeps coming from.

First Troy Aikman seemed to throw him under the bus, then Deion Sanders. And then on Tuesday Aikman clarified his statements and said he thinks Williams is a good player - right about the same time Emmitt Smith was throwing him under the bus across the room.

To Williams, the constant questions about whether he can be a No. 1 receiver are unnecessary, since he's been a No. 1 receiver his entire career. Whether he's caught up in a backlash about the release of Terrell Owens, or the trade that brought him to Dallas in exchange for prize draft picks or a poor output last season, Williams says he's getting a raw deal.

"Why am I a target? I'm just a guy," Williams said Wednesday. "I'm a coachable wide receiver who does what he's coached to do. I'm getting grief from everybody. I don't know why, I've just got to go out there and prove to people that I can play this game."

Despite all the attention he's apparently been paying to the naysayers this spring, Williams now says he's going to just go about his business and prove everyone wrong.

"Every time I say something about what I do positively it gets turned around negative. I'm just going to continue to do what I've been doing and everybody can see what we can do in September."

This is the best possible thing that could have happened for Williams. Now he's pissed and can't wait to show everyone that he can indeed be a viable number 1 WR.

He's mad and he's working his butt off *with Romo* in order to prove what he can do.

I think the guy is going to have a really good season. He's got too much ability, he's too smart, his hands are too good, and he has too good a team around him not to succeed.

In addition to the welcomes to the DFW that you have already received Roy let me add one thing. The media was obsessed with the guy you are replacing. The mud they wallow in is going to slosh around a bit. Don't worry about it, it's just mud. Do your thing.

Unless, like Owens, he becomes a locker room malcontent. Or, a whiner. He shouldn't say anything. Just do it.

Uh oh. Sounds like he's cracking. Roy, you're a target because of what we gave up to get you, the amount of $ we're paying you, and the lousy sneak preview you gave us last year.

Just how much of last years bad numbers were Roy's fault? We can pretty much guess that there was a lot of pressure on Romo to keep sending passes TO's way. Then Roy has to get used to Romo and vice versa. THen there is the injury. So frankly the "previews" worthiness is very open to question.

Well I am glad he is standing up for himself a little here. He should pay no attention to deion though, everyone knows the man is a buffoon.

Why aikman and emmitt have to take jabs at him is just a function of the media in this market, the only stories are negative ones. They portray the team one way because that is the only way to get quick attention, plus some of these guys I still think are looking to jump to espn so they report in that manner. Like mr. espn mosely.

on the other hand, he is one of the highest paid players in the league and with the trade that brought him here the team traded the opportunity to get a younger possibly better player at a couple of positions.

All he has to do is his job and the tune everyone will sing will be different. Knowing the media in this market, they will probably give him a big head by halloween if he is playing well.

I hope he remembers all the people going after him too. I really hope roy, witten, romo and some others being attacked by all these guys for months brings them together. I hope they talk about it at practice and laugh at the media.

Shut your mouth and let your play speak for itself. You want the naysayers to go away? Make us proud that we decided to engineer a questionable trade for you by blowing up on the field...

Imagine that...drama in Dallas WITHOUT you-know-who.

The media's not gonna put pressure on Garrett or Romo or the Oline or the defense or the other WRs. So now Roy has to shoulder the burden.

Heavy is the head that wears the Star...

Just when we thought Roy Williams was no longer the whipping boy.

Seriously, someone needs to sit these guys down and tell them to suck it up. They're all too thin-skinned.
