Whether or not Tony Romo was giving backhanded compliments to ex-Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens last week by referring to T.O. as "he," as in "he's a great player," Romo's words have migrated a few 1,000 miles north.

And now a member of the Buffalo media has asked T.O. to comment on an apparent beef between he and his former quarterback, the same way he was prodded in Philadelphia and Dallas. And what did T.O. say? About what you would expect.

"Dude, I could care less," Owens said Wednesday. "I mean, he doesn't mention my name, that's fine. What about it? Bill Parcells didn't call me by my name either, so what's the difference?"

Last week, when speaking to the media for the first time since T.O. was released, Romo wouldn't say whether he had talked to the receiver after the move was made. The guess is Romo is ready to deflect all T.O. questions from this point forward. Partly because he's good at it, and partly because he always attempts to stay above the fray anyway.

But this is one fray Romo can't avoid, the same post-mortem back and forth Owens had with Jeff Garcia and Donovan McNabb. If T.O. is continually pushed for comment on the subject, he'll make one, and suddenly it will be a distraction in the Cowboys locker room. If the players don't catch wind of what T.O. says, the local media will make sure they're aware.

So when Romo speaks the next time, and he's probably better off making it sooner rather than later, he needs to clear the air. He can't pretend he doesn't know what's been said. He needs to mention T.O. by name and really try to nip this thing in the bud. No dancing around the subject. If things are not good between the two players, he should make an attempt to bury the hatchet.

Because the Cowboys, and Romo in particular, cannot afford for the specter of Owens to linger into next season and beyond.

Oh my goodness, is this really a big deal??..he did'nt mention his name?

This is what I'm talking about no matter what Romo says this thing is going to keep on. Best thing Romo can say is nothing. If it is not a question about this upcoming season and this team then tell the reporter no comment. The media is going to create a back and forth with Romo and TO best thing is refuse to talk about it there is nothing to be said TO is a Buffalo Bill and Romo is a Dallas Cowboy

What Romo needs to do is stop playing like complete crap late in the season. The beef with owens is a non issue.

I think the Cowboys players..team..will move on fine without Terrell.

Terrell, on the other hand, won't till he writes his next book.

As long as he's in the league he's going to be a pain in the rear. That's just him.

the Drama between Mcnabby and TO lasted for years - it's what the media, and by extension, the fans want. Romo is smarter than most of the people interviewing him and in general makes very few verbal gaffs. It won't go away no matter what he says, so saying less (which annoys the media) is always better.

If I'm Romo, then I'll say T.O.'s full name in every way possible.

"Terrell Owens is a great player."

"I think Terrell Owens is a HOF-level player."

"Terrell Owens was a great player for Dallas."

"I wish Terrell Owens the best in Buffalo."

I just love it when reporters call for players to give them more information and try to make it sound like it's the right thing to do.

Ellis: I need a story. Romo, you need to talk about the situation with Owens so you can bury the hatchet.
Romo: I could care less.

I don't understand why TO making comments should have any effect on our locker room. Is he part of our locker room? Is he a somehow still a Cowboy and I didn't realize it? This article is just stupid.

No it is just the question that players will have to contend with however there is no rule that the players have to feed the press info about Owens and the less you say the better off you are.

Personally, I'd like to see him simply say "next question" when asked about anything other than the upcoming season and/or players who are currently members of the team. Just tell the media that they are focused on the upcoming season and they don't want to be distracted with questions about last year or players who have moved on. He should make one blanket statement like "Terrell Owens was a great player for the Dallas Cowboys and was a big part of any success the team has had over the past few seasons." Then follow it up with "Thats the last time I will talk about Terrell Owens because he is no longer here and I am focused on this season so do not ask me another question about him because I will not answer it. Thank you."

How in the hell can Romo "bury he hatchet" when TO is going keep running his mouth regardless? The hatchet needs to be buried by the media, but it won't happen so there's nothing Romo can do to fix this. He's damned if he does comment and he's damned if he doesn't. I'm disappointed in Josh Ellis. He usually writes much better than this.

Looks like someone needs to create a Twitter account with an alias like TrentEdwards#5 or similar and start making subtle jabs about Owens. You know like "I think I threw the ball pretty well in OTAs; we just had a couple drops by our WRs." or "I need to work on my rapport with the WRs because on deep passes, I have a tendency to overthrow Owens but underthrow Evans." That should give the media some things to talk about for a week or two.

Seriously, this was TO's best QB relationship since Steve Young.

Why is a writer from the official team site imploring Romo to get involving in this nonsense?

The best approach is to say nothing.
