Basically, yes.

The Cowboys didn't want to give him guaranteed money which is obvious from the incentive based contract.

There is no reason for the player/agent to get themselves locked in long term without guaranteed money.

Oh, no doubt. Wasn't referring the deal deal he signed.

If they offered a better deal with guaranteed money. Control goes back to Jerry.

Anyway... Sack so e fudging QBs lol

There has been a big debate in regards to the Cowboys signing any top rated Free agents.

The debate is over. The Cowboys signed the #1 DE and probably a top 3 overall free agent. The cost could be up to 13M for 1 year.

Were there some sig wagers on this issue? Who was it that guaranteed it would not happen?

I love this offseason! I said before FA started that if they signed Greg Hardy I don't care how many free agents they lose as long as they franchise Dez.

I'm OK with the roster as is including RB. My biggest concern is now CB.

@LittleD

I feel better about cornerback than I do about running back. The combination of two failed first-round picks, last year's main backup and our change-of-pacer doesn't exactly make me feel like we'll be able to come close to duplicating last year's running game.

I think fans are a little casual about the position, that we'll just get it done either with these guys or through the draft, but we've seen similar attempts fail in the past (Felix Jones/Julius Jones/Troy Hambrick/Eddie George). Yes, we've got a great line, but it isn't as simple as just lining up anyone behind them and 4 yards per carry is automatic.

I think this was a win for both camps.

Personally I wasn't as against signing a high-priced FA as I was rejiggering Romo's contract so that his cap-crunch was pushed into future seasons.

And here we are on March 19th, the Cowboys did sign a high-priced FA AND they did it without the Romo-restructure... And given who's left in free agency it appears that they will not have to do it.

WIN all the way around IMO.

Not sure that's true. They will have to free up money to absorb $8 million plus. They could do this through restructuring Carr's contract or cutting him, I believe, or restructuring Romo. Since we don't have a corner to replace Carr, I think a Romo restructure is more likely.

They can add a rotation RB in the draft, but getting a CB that is ready to contribute is iffy.

I think we're OK at CB if we keep Carr. We've got starters. We've added a replacement for Moore, who I believe Dallas sees as better. We've still got a first-round pick we haven't been able to fully get the measure of (although I view him much like I do McFadden and Williams at this point).

We need depth there, but we can get by with what we have if necessary. We have starters, although they can definitely be upgraded.

I do not think we can get by at RB because we have no starters. We have a bunch of backups at this point from whom we somehow hope we'll find a starter, or that we'll strike gold in the draft.

Still early but we could always bring Moore back. He hasn't signed with anyone which may tell us what other teams think of him. He visited the Bucs and Steelers so far.

Agree, I think Carr takes a pay cut but returns. He is fine as a #2 CB, if he was scheduled to make 1 MM next year instead of 8MM everyone would love the guy. Scandrick has established himself as a very good CB as we say in the playoffs. Corey White will be better than Sterling Moore if we keep him in a limited role and we will likely draft a CB in the first three rounds. And no one is counting on anything from Claiborne but anything we get from him is a bonus.

I think that has to be the plan. Not any free agents out there good enough to take his place.

I had assumed that he had already signed with the Bucs before it was announced that he had.

various:

Firstly, XW called this deal and even mentioned a 1 year 12m deal IIRC. That deserves kudos.

Beyond that tho, philosophically I don't think Dallas is going after top free agents.
This had zero guaranteed dollars and the reality is it is pretty shocking Hardy took this deal.
Nicole Holder has more guaranteed money than Greg Hardy....
I LOVE this deal for Dallas. No risk and a top flight pass rusher in that age group you want.

As to the "will happen" or "won't happen" debate that's probably overblown.
Fish reported Dallas was out and people believed it.
Then he said they were in and people believed it.

Parnell/Free: XW was right that Parnell was a nice RT prospect.
He was just wrong to think Dallas even cared. Free was never leaving and they weren't signing them both.

If the choice at #27 was Gurley and Malcolm Brown, which way do you go?

Gurley. I think he's a legit top 10 talent. I'd be pretty happy with Brown if Gurley isn't there, however, and would probably take him over any other RB knowing that I could pick up a pretty good back in round 2 or 3.

You?

The team needs a prominent defensive end as well as tackle. There needs to be a push from the interior of the defensive line, so I would be bending towards the defensive line in this draft. As much as I would be tempted to add another player the quality of a Tony Dorsett or Emmitt Smith, the defensive line needs to arrive as a quality positional group as is the offensive line.

Brown is very mobile for a large man. That adds to the box area and where this fan would head towards.
