We had the wrong shoes.
You are a true gentleman and thinker. This is why I believe you are one of the top posters on this board.
I guess I have zero faith in Jerry. But to my point, to get to the top, I believe it is do what is necessary. And that means hit the ground running this FA and get top players to add to this team.
If Jerry doesn't make a serious run at Tre Boston, since ET is gone, then his ambitions are profits. And the bemoaning he does about the difficulty of complete success is a used car salesman in a leisure suit.
Read Catch's comments here, Bob.
This may be the most important aspect of Jerry futzing around.
1. The same people haven't been in the front office for 22 years
2. If you can't see the difference between the Late 90's early 2000s Cowboys and the Cowboys from 2015-now then nobody can help you.
We actually have a plan in place and you can see the progression they're trying to make.
They still are behind the curve on a couple of things like not extending their players early and taking a RB at #4, but all in all you got to like what you see.
In addition to knowing the guy - work ethic and fit - you usually save money. If you sign a guy before he hits the market, you don't have to compete against the market.
So the idea is to maintain chemistry, keep a guy you know and like, and hopefully save some money.
And our guys are as good as anyone on the market - Smith, Cooper, Byron, Dak, Zeke, Tank--who in FA was clearly better than any of these guys?
The first 16 or so years of that 22 you mentioned, saw Dallas as one of the biggest spending teams in free agency.
Yet the most consistent success of those 22 years has been the last 5 years when they’ve won 3 division titles... the last 3 years seeing them with the second most wins in the NFL. When they’ve been frugal in free agency.
Spending big on other teams players doesn’t automatically breed success.
Well said, the last deal jones boys made was for the kraken guy and that was actually a decent move, but then romo got hurt
and under JG and linehan the offense collapsed.
Had they kept murray, and romo doesnt get hurt, that signing might have led them past the div round.
But the way it worked out it seemed to sour the jones boys on signing FA .
They also tend to go for FA that are not that good, and wouldnt help the team that much, like the phil D lineman a couple years ago.
A team has to sign someone good that will help the team at that point for it to work right.
Last year they wanted a wr who just isnt that good, luckily he signed for more with KC. and he didnt help KC at all.
Well you have to go for the right guys, not guys like roy williams and some of the others they went after.
Because they are really good at selling the idea that we are next years champs...
A lot of that has to do with coaching, which as you point out, they haven't fixed, either.
That's a bad analogy, because the back end of free agency has diminishing returns in value, just like the NFL draft.
the jones boys tend to go with guys they like personally, and guys with names, that is why witten was signed, and sean lee, and olawale.
And also they like the cheap guys the ones who sign for what they want to pay, they like those guys regardless of how they do on the field.
Look at our bkup qb's. 2 guys who are cheap, but have never played in a single NFL GAME !
But they are cheap, and they like them lol.
Signing the same guys that sputtered in the playoffs last year, shows the jones boys dont understand why they lost to the rams.
They changed the OC , got a new qb coach, and with the same guys, minus Beasley I guess they think they can beat the rams now.
They think they have a SB team now, so why spend big on a FA.
They may be lucky with the no ET thing, as he just broke his leg, and no telling if he will be as good as he was.
Signing injured players is risky.
I still believe they add a starting caliber S, either via the draft, or free agency. After that Stephen Jones stated that the priority this offseason was resigning their own free agents. So you can be disappointed, but you shouldn't be surprised.
he also said they would not be conservative lol.
Basically it will be the same coaches, except for kellen as rookie OC , and same team, except no beasely.
They will make the playoffs, then get smacked in the div round !
That could mean aggressively signing their own FAs, since the 1st big wave of free agency is pretty much over now. BTW, I'm not advocating the Jones way, but nothing so far this off season has surprised me. It's how they've been doing free agency acquisitions the past several years.
It’s a failure of an off-season every year, minus the draft. That’s why our owners go on va-kay this exact time every year.
Define "just fine". They may not be talented enough for a playoff run.
Excellent stuff. Totally agree.
Ok, how do we win?
The new qb coach should help Dak. See that as a plus.
