Defensive Backs Combine

4.5 for Claiborne and 4.51 for Kirkpatrick is about average for their size. It's not great but isn't not bad.

Claiborne has great fluid hips.

Kirkpatrick's hips is the quesrtion mark.

I agree 4.5's not a bad number for claiborne, but for someone who is considered to be an elite corner, it should've been better. I think this knocks him back a few spots, unless he re-runs during his pro day and improves to the low 4.4s.

the team who passes up Claiborne based off these numbers will be kicking themselfs in the butt for years to come.

Charlie Casserly is working the stop watch for NFLN. I'm not sure how or who runs the official stop watch, but all the times seem slower than Casserly's.

Gilmore looked solid, showed pretty good hands although he dropped a couple later on in the team side by side competitions. He showed decent hips as well in his backpedaling. I think he solidified his status as a round 2 CB. Might even go higher than that if both Jenkins and Kirkpatrick go early.

Bentley looked fluid as well and much bigger than I thought he would. Showed impressive hands to go with his speed.

Didn't really pay much attention to the other two, plus NFL Network was doing a lot of talking with the drills going on in the background so it was hard to see everyone (I suspect this is why I missed Kirkpatrick's drills).

That has made me so frustrated the past few years. They literally showed RGIII and Luck's combine numbers about 4-5 times per hour it seems. They focused more on Rich Eisen talking about his 40 time more than a lot of athletes. Typically a guy would run, they'd talk for a minute and a half about that player and that would be it. But Eisen gets more time and analysis than most of the athletes. It is a bit ridiculous.

Gilmore was already a 2nd rounder IMO. I think this combine moved him up into the 1st round.

always be wary of unofficial numbers.

kirkpatrick's issue is his hips. there is a reason there have been like five 6'3" or more Cbs in NFL history. anatomy and physiology.

he could certainly be our pick at 14 but that would scare me quite a bit.

Which tells me once again you haven't really watched the players you love to pontificate on. First, Kirkpatrick is 6'1.5", so your bogus general notion of "ruh Roy, he's 6'3"....must mean he has stiff hips" is off the mark to begin with. Second, there are at least 5-6 starting corners in the league RIGHT NOW that are 6'2"+. Third, Kirkpatrick is a lean athlete with very fluid hips at 186 lbs. He's not Davi Fulcher out there playing corner.

From what I've heard about him, he can't tackle worth a lick. He definitely should have worked out, was he injured?

He's a big hitter, but not a fundamental tackler.

This is what drives me crazy about the combines. Looking at some past results guys who put up good numbers be it in the 40 or the 3 cones did not always prove to be good NFL players.

When you hit the football field on game day there is no 3 cones out there, no stop watch, no free weights or a pit to jump in. It is players facing off against each other and you got to go by how they are as players not workouts alone.

These works do not simulate the game itself, they may have their purpose but it leaves a lot to be desired.

2nd round players Stephon Gilmore and Jammell Flemming and 3rd-4th round Dwight Bentley did great in all the drills. All show very fluid hips in the 3 cone and 20 and 60 yard shuttle.

Still waiting on Kirkpatrick to do these.

Long day for the combine, then.

I'll likely be watching the re-run on NFL Network tonight. Been out of the loop all day.

Gilmore ran a 6.61 3 cone. Jenkins ran a 6.95, Claiborne ran a 7.01

Yeah I think Gilmore jumped into the bottom first after today.

with a 3.94 20 yard shuttle and 11.15 60 yard shuttle

I guess Claiborne does not have fluid hips since he ran a 7.01

But he sure knows how to cover a WR. :laugh2:

He's a big CB with great athletic numbers, on field production and he's tough to boot. He's considered 4th best CB in the draft and two of the guys who are ranked ahead of them have enough red flags that teams will pass on them. I see Gilmore going in the top 20. Right now, he's the guy I want in the first.

If guys like AJ Green are slow then give me more slow guys.

Workout are workouts and football is football. Give me football players you guys can have the workout warriors in the fruit of the loom bowl.

no 7.01 isn't bad for CB.

Claiborne didn't destroy the combine but he also didn't do anything bad. He had good drills and looked great. His times were right around average.
