A question for defensive gurus: Did we actually go with a prevent for the entire 4th quarter, or did it just seem like it?

I don't know, but you'd think if they were in prevent they'd get out of it in the Red Zone, but it sure didn't seem that way.

You know way back in week one when we scored and moved the ball on San Fran in the second half I read on here it was because they had a big lead and lost their intensity and went to a prevent. Now tonight Chicago moves the ball on us late when we are up 35-7 and I read it's because we just suck...... Weird place this cowboy zone

We have two players on defense. RoMac and Oscan. Anyone else could be replaced with any starter or 2nd stringer from any team and it'd be the exact same result. Marshall and Bennett were out and we couldn't come close to touching Cutler or defending a pass. We're SCREWED come playoff time, if we even make it there. This defense isn't even tight enough to be a tourniquet.

So a player not on any NFL practice squad should be brought onto our active roster? Did he suddenly learn how to play special teams? He's still a free agent for a reason.

Can he line up on third down and get in the QB's area code at least?

Be honest, 42-41 never crossed your mind?

The only keepers on this defense are T.Crawford, O.Scandrick, R. Mcclain and maybe Lawrence with a full camp

This. Someday this defense may be good again. I don't think anyone not named these players will be on it (caveat, Melton just because of contract issues)

Listen. You said THIS GAME:
http://cowboyszone.com/threads/defensive-ineptitude.308056/#post-5837651

If you're gonna start something, stick to it, and stop with your straw men.

I absolutely voice my frustrations, because I'm an emotional dude, so if you're going to make your judgments of me based on a game thread, you will get raw, uncut opinions. Some are wrong, some are right. I'm just venting.

That said, NOT ONCE have I quit. I'm here for every freaking game, dude.

Once the game's over, I generally calm down and make more rational thoughts.

Vent away brother, I feel ya, people need to understand that a lot of people are just venting and hate to see their team lose and sometimes that can lead to some crazy talk, big deal, no ones opinion here will ever have an effect on the team

This defense went in one season from top-heavy, spotty, and bereft of depth to mediocre, less spotty, with much broader mediocre depth. That's actually a moderately important improvement for a unit where you're basically only ever as good as your weak links. It's not like offense where you call the play and so you can protect a couple of weak spots where you have to. On defense, you're exposed.

But we've got very few players who are even close to being considered impact players. Maybe McClain. Scandrick, sort of, though he provides very good coverage more than the actually makes big plays. Lee, when he's healthy.

Crawford's developing into a catalytic player. Church is a guy you can get some impact plays from if you can keep him in the right situations. Lawrence and Hitchens have some potential. We've got a couple journeymen like Mincey and Durant that every team has and needs over the long haul. But there aren't guys on defense who are equivalent to guys like Dez or Demarco. We need to be looking at adding 3-4 starting-level players and another impact player on top of getting Lee back and McClain extended, at a minimum for next year. On top of resigning the offensive talent we want to keep. It's going to be a pretty tall order.

The good news is, though, that the offense is basically set, so the lion's share of the draft and any FA dollars we have the next two years or so go to making that side of the ball better. We've also got a relatively simple scheme, so guys can have an impact more quickly than if you were running something like what we had under Wade or Ryan. If we just stay put offensively, reasonable incremental improvement ought to make us NFC postseason contenders until we need to somehow bring in a replacement for Tony Romo.

Bears were stupid for not kicking it deep when they closed to 10 points.

I'd probably have kicked it deep, too, but we had a 13 point lead with the ball coming to us with 1:50 left, going against one of the very worst defenses in the league with a running game that had already gashed them all night. Giving us more field to work with very likely meant giving us a chance to take the rest of the air out of the game clock at a point where they still needed two scores. Even if they stopped us, they were going to still need two offensive possessions.

checkdowns from Romo, 25+ carries from murray a game, 10+ carries a game from randle, win T.O.P handily

this is the only way to protect this god awful defense moving forward.

The defense tonight really had only given up 7 points heading into the fourth quarter. Then we played soft, gave up the muffed on-sides kick, and gave up some scores, including a couple of 4th and long conversions on the big 27 OPI call in the end zone right in front of the ref that was just blown.

(this second pic is just to show the ref was looking right at the hold a second before and somehow didn't see the jersey getting yanked and the CB off balance as a result after starting out in good position to make a play on the ball)

I don't want to defend the defense too much, because it's been a liability here recently, but tonight wasn't a complete defensive meltdown. We know we're going to give up yards when we move into those stupid soft zones. We had points to give, and, except for the turnover, we were ok giving up a few in exchange for milking the clock tonight. All in all, it was still a good win against an ok team.

I think this offense is good enough to compete for a superbowl right now. Sadly, the defense is the exact opposite. We will be lucky to win 1 playoff game with this defense. They suck at getting pressure and the secondary is bad, especially when playing zone. The defense is in serious need of an above average corner and a pass rushing monster at DE. Adding another DT would also be helpful.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I shut the television off and went to bed when it was 35-7. Nice to see the defense remained in character.
