Yes, in that instance it was open, but there is much more that goes into a pass other than a WR being open. The 1st read on that play had a much higher percentage of failure (AS WE ALL CAN ATTEST TO), than a 6 yard pass into Witten's chest in the middle of the field. He handled the situation poorly, just like many others, and surely many more to come.
Well, coaching doesn't tell the QB which read to throw to. Garrett doesn't call "throw it deep to Austin on three".
But what that playcall did was have our supposedly best WR wide open down field on a simple pitch and catch. You couldn't ask for a better situation than that. The players failed to make it happen. And it's as simple as that.
