that deal was only guaranteed for 20 million and paid 10 million apy for the first 6 years. The cowboys were going to get a steal if they got dez bryant to sign that deal. Everything on the back end was fake fairy dollars and they were likely to cut him before it ever got that far.
Actually, The Tyron Smith contract was lauded as being very well structured because it was plausible that, because of the way that it was structured, there is a good possibility for both Tyron AND the Cowboys that the entire contract has a damned good possibility of being played completely out.
Now, I agree that the Cowboys would be getting a steal to get on that type of contract wit Dez and the odds of it happening aren't really in the Cowboys favor. However, it does show some level of savvy and an eye towards the future when they start negotiations from that standpoint. I have faith the a deal will be struck between Dez and the Cowboys before it's all said and done but you can't blame the Cowboys for starting the negotiations in that ball park. To add, Jerry has NEVER let a player walk out the door that he wanted to keep around on his second contract. Not once. Ever.
As for the loyalty comment? Puhlease. The Cowboys have committed more resources to Dez' well being than any other team in the league would have invested. Sure he could have been drafted by anyone else and he COULD have been the same type of dominant player. He also could have ended up being the next Josh Gordon, or Blackmon. Loyalty is a two way street. Jay Z has trained Dez to believe that the only symptom of loyalty is money. Dez was amicable and said all the right things about being a Cowboy until Roc Nation stepped into the picture. From that point on it was all about the money. Now, don't get me wrong, I think the player should go out there and get everything he can get from this game, this team, and this league. One day he'll be nothing but a memory tossed to the side in favor of the new flavor of the game. However, there is more than one way to reach the end of a deal.
It's funny that Jay Z suddenly had a new found interest in Dez right at the time that he was about to cash in and, magically, the word "loyalty" started being bandied about at that very moment. Where was Jay Z when Dez was having problems with his mom? Where was Jay Z when Dez was being sued for unpaid jewelry debts? He was no where to be found. Dez wasn't quite the sure thing as he is now, back then. He was damaged goods with a 50/50 upside. Jay Z has no interest in Dez' ACTUAL well being and he sure as hell didn't have any interest when Dez was at his lowest. He didn't then and he doesn't now. Dez is nothing more to Jay Z than a commodity. Just like his wife. It's just that Dez is no longer a 50/50 proposition. He's stacked deck in no limits poker game. You bet Jay Z wants in on the action, NOW. Yet, somehow, Roc Nation has found a way to add the word "loyalty" to Dez' vocabulary in a mere few weeks. It's too bad because I think Dez and the Cowboys would have come to an amicable agreement before it was all said and done to begin with. The only thing that Roc Nation has brought to the table is distrust and hostility and that's no good for the team or the player regardless of where the negotiations find their end game.
