"He gains nothing by sitting out. NOTHING."
Not true , he could use it to prevent being tagged a 2nd time next year.
To reduce injury risks, he could sit out 10 games and still make 4-5 mil, if he did that or even 2-3 games, no way they will tag him next year.

Plus Dez might decide to go join Murray up in philly , where they pay more.

Another thing is if the cowoys p[ay dez what he wants, they wanted the david wilson guy to still be dez baby sitter, but dez dont want that .
This was a issue that prevented a contract signed before 2014 season.
So dez wants150 mil contract with no baby sitters , he says he wont get in any trouble.
So what to do ? Do they pay him big $ and hope he stays out of trouble and shows up at meetings and practice on time etc?
and were talking a 7-10 year contract, and with no supervision for dez would he make it?

Dez basically fired david wilson as soon as the old contract expired, and then said to cowboys give me 130 million and I dont need no babysitters,
or supervision I will be no problem, just give me the money...... now!
But it fell apart on the supervision issue and dez played last year with no new contract.
I find it all kinda amusing.

dez can sit up to 10 games, he can also pick and choose which games he will play in lol.
The only reason to sit out is to maybe make them know that a franchise tag in 2016 might not be a good idea.
He could play less games an that means less risk of injury, and he could still make millions, if he played only 8 games.

It would be funny reading here each week that dez says he is playing or not playing.

If he just signs the tag contract, and plays all games and plays well, then the cowboys might just tag him again next year.
if he sits out some games, then they wont do it next year.

Losing 6.4m to protest that you are being underpaid by 3m doesn't seem like a good plan.

Making 12.8m for one year after making 11.8 for your entire 5 year career isn't a strong complaint either.

He can't pick and choose games. Once he signs the tag he has to report. If he skipped a game after that he could be suspended without pay and lose a year of service time.

Thank you "slick325" and "bkight13" for your franchise tag knowledge.

I found this article dated March 2nd that is actually an open letter to Dez from a former sports agent. It is very informative on the way Dez and his agent Tom Condon is handling the protracted contract talks and the franchise tag. I recommend this to anyone that really wants to understand how this all works. I want to believe this won't get messy, but it really could.

Excellent read and very informative. Thank you.

Im not doubting you, but why have i never heard of a player using that tactic? Since they all hate the tag?

The main reason the tactic isn't used often is because for the most part love playing the game and sitting out is torture to them. Secondly, they don't like alienating themselves in the locker room. It's business but there are personal relationships in the locker room. As pivotal a player as Dez is to Dallas, sitting out games will impact them on the field. The schedule is tough and losses could mount without Dez, how would the others feel when he reports? Third, he would alienate himself with 31 other owners by sitting out 10 games. The other owners may not all get along or speak often, but they will compare notes when it comes to the business of football.

It's a risky move but could be effective...

He doesn't get the full amount if he holds out. It gets pro-rated.

BK...the amount isn't pro-rated. The full amount is guaranteed as Dez needs only six games on the active roster to accrue the season. The scenario is similar to having a vet on the roster week one and his salary for the season vesting.

Show me posts from anyone on this board including you, him or a quote from an expert who did have confidence in the team heading into last season?

Of course to no one's surprise you're in the 1st link raining gloom and doom down on our season saying how garbage we would be under .5000 blah blah (even with Murray and Dez on the team) And in the 2nd link I was so confident that we would make the playoffs that I tried to bet money with another poster who said we would be 3-13 and there was no hope for the season. If you took negatively glasses off it was easy to see how we would be better in 2014 over 2013. Of course @stasheroo and @tyke1doe were in there telling me how stupid I was for believing in this season and how nobody would be able to replace hall of famer Ware. So yeah you're right you weren't alone in the gloom.

Hmm.....Dez needs only six games under the tag but each game he holds out, he loses that 700k or so. It is my understanding that he can not receive the full tag value for only six games.

I may be completely wrong, this stuff is confusing if you don't follow it closely.

No reason to have confidence before the season in last years team. If you had it you were pretty much just a homer because no way on earth would anyone predict that a team that is perennially towards the bottom of attempted runs with the football would actually run the ball.

Being a homer had nothing to do with It. I was high off Martin from the draft I knew he was really good, we weren't going to be starting 20 different defensive linemen and it was our 2nd year going into the scheme. It was easy to see that we would have been better last year, at least to me anyway

I don't blame a player for trying to get paid
But it needs to be handled professionally
He would be stupid to set out any games because it's not like the team could pay him at that point
If this is a bluff it's a dumb one
Any teams knows only an idiot would set out games when there is nothing to be gained from it
Once the July deadline passes the team can't sign him and if he sets out he loses that game check
If he sets out enough he loses credit for that season
There is nothing to be gained from it at all
You aren't costing the team since they don't have to pay you

This isn't a shocking turn of events to be honest. This is pretty standard by players looking for a new deal who aren't getting anywhere in the contract discussions yet.

There is no real hurry on the Cowboys side until they get closer to the season.

1st or 2nd year of our defensive scheme doesn't really matter. It's as basic as basic can be. These guys should've had it mastered after about a week of practice.

I loved the Travis Martin pick as well but even after we had drafted Tyron and Frederick we still were towards the bottom when it came to running the ball. You could not possibly predict the Cowboys were going to be so run heavy and keep their defense off the field.

I'm wondering, if Dez does sit and in fact does lose 750k per game, do we regain that cap space going into next season? I would think so unless there's some small print in the new CBA that disallows this.

You're one of those FANS who predict the playoffs every season care to deny it? lol There's plenty of FANS here who predict the playoffs every season. I'll guarantee you were predicting the Cowboys would make the playoffs during every single one of their 8-8 seasons. :laugh:Anyone who was predicting the playoffs for the Cowboys in June of last year has homer written all over them and makes the same prediction heading into every season.

I don't begrudge any player trying to get his money. It's his body, his career.
Having said that, I simply can't get worried about stuff like this. It's part of the game. The only people who are going to look out for your best interest are you.
If Dez gets hurt in the service of the Dallas Cowboys, they're not going to continue to pay him the fullness of his contract. So he has to do what he has to do to protect himself or make as much as he can. And I aint gonna hate on him for that.

Best post i have seen on here in a long time. i 100% agree with you. and why some on here don't get it, is beyond me.

considering at each of the 8-8 season came down to the last game of the year to determine playoffs why would a person be a homer to think they could win the last game of the season and make the post season? Predicting SB is one thing but 8-8 team making it to the post season is not a far reach.
Myself I expected Dallas to compete and win the east and why not 2013 season Dallas had gone 5-1 in the NFC East and fell short in large part because Romo was out. 12-4? no did not predict that I did think 10-6 was possible and I felt we were every bit as good as any team in the east.
I have been called a homer and even a doomsayer at different times, I’m at the point I don’t care what other fans feel about me I call it as I see it.
