He has very little trade value, we might get a third and a fifth for him. He's just not very good... Nobody will do it though.

Unfortunately nobody wants to admit it but you are right. You have to take whatever you think he's worth and discount that heavily for the contract. In all seriousness we may be better off taking the cap hit by cutting him and signing someone for half the money better suited to this offense.

Dez has a huge cap hit and we don't utilize what he can do. We also seem to potentially play better without him.

If the team decided they were willing to part with him:

1. what do you think the trade compensation would be?

2. What would you trade him for and why?
Consider his cap hit and his Super Bowl appearances.
Exactly.
We get a third-round pick.

Dez can be a great receiver. We still wait for that.

Hilton is just a WR2? He led the NFL in yards receiving in 2016.

He is on pace for his 5th straight 1000+ yard season, averages 16 yards per reception, and missed only 2 games in his 6 year career.
1000 yards in todays NFL is not a 1000 yards 20 years ago.

Hell Williams had 840 yards in 2015 and he is a lower level #2. He is small fast WR meant to take the top off a defense. At 5'9" you want him taking slants 4-5 times a game when he has 4.3 speed to burn? We send Dez on 9s all day, they do not throw the Go as well as they used to.

He's easily replaced in the draft.

How much are you worth? Just wondering.

Yes. They don't HAVE to cut Dez loose but they can if they decide it is the right move for the team.

Absolutely, if they cut him they save the $12.5 mill in salary but still incur the $8 mill in signing bonus. Is there a competent receiver (above Dez talent) who could be signed for the $4.5 mill difference we would have to eat?

edit: I should say "in addition to" the difference

No team would take his contract if you gave him away.

You would have to offer to give the other team a 1st to get them to take him and you still might not find any takers.

Only the 12.5M matters. They can push 4.5M of another players contract to the following year.

2018
Gain 8M Dez
Gain 4.5M pushed to 2019
Total = 12.5M

2019
Gain 4.5M Dez
Lose 4.5M from money pushed from 2018
Total = 0

I agree, they can always push another players contract down the road. It seems lately though, the FO has been very reluctant to do so, which in general I'm somewhat happy of not "kicking the can" down the road.

My main point is that they gain the entire 12.5M. It does not matter that 8M is 2018 and 4.5M is 2019.

I get that x, my point is they would have to eat the dead money (either in '18 or split with '19) yet they still have to find a replacement who would be better than Dez and be worth it to eat the dead money plus pay the replacement. In the draft, maybe so. If via free agency? Not so sure to take the risk.

That's a distinct possibility. The team has definitely held off on restructuring him to keep its options open. Almost every other similar contract the Cowboys have done has been restructured.

We have to consider that the Cowboys know things that we don't. They may have refused to restructure Dez because of things unrelated to his play.

Dez may be more of a headache behind the scenes than we are aware. It's not far fetched based on his prior issues.

Bryant is done after this season..just like his guaranteed money.

It is a distinct possibility. It is odd to think of a Cowboys team without Dez, Witten and of course Romo is already gone.

There will be a day it happens. Witten's skills suck but he has been able to somewhat get by based on his intelligence. Dez isn't a tactician or a technical perfectionist so his shelf life might be a lot shorter.
