It's a small group of us, IR.

Then don't cheer for Pacman. Cheer against him.

I'm going to cheer for every Cowboy. Because the better every Cowboy plays, the more likely we are to win a playoff game....

TNew clearly wants to be extended now as he knows how dangerous next year is. If he gets injured, he may never get his big payday. Moreover, we take a CB early who looks like he can start and Pacman turns his life around, we may be inclined to let TNew walk next year.

..with all the issues involved with Dallas pursuing Pacman and now signing him.

If I was Tnew, I'd be looking at how this team does things. And I'd also be concerned with how it might effect me if I was in a final year of my contract, too.

Just look at what Dallas consistantly does personel-wise..

..in the case of last year..

Flozell is in his last year of his contract and Dallas goes out and signs BIGG and pays a King's Ransom to sign him, really LT money to be honest, saying he's insurance against Flo not signing again or the team not being able to afford both possibly.

That is meant as an advanced position from a team standpoint that it is not going to be held hostage to some outragious new contract demands and feel it has no choice but to accept it.

In the end, it got worked out and Flo stayed. But we also now have another $9-10 mil/yr. player on the roster and there is only so many of those you can afford on a team.

Especially one that hasn't won a playoff game in 12 years.

Then in the case of the RB scenario, Dallas let it be pretty clear that in 2007, MBIII and Julius Jones were playing for starting money contracts depending on performance because Dallas won't be able to afford to pay Jones starter money when MBIII was equal to or better than he was.

And now MBIII has won the competition, Julius Jones has moved on and when MBIII feels that it's time to be awarded the starter position money after 2007 with his a Pro Bowl performance..

..he's being put on hold instead and tendered as a RFA while Dallas is going to draft another RB high in 2-morrow's draft as a possible replacement for MBIII should it be necessary. Of course it's being touted as a 'complementary back' to help MBIII in 2008. But all of us know that if the new guy exceeds MBIII in 2008 in production..

..what happens to MBIII's asking price for his new deal..? It starts to drop like new home prices lately.

That's another big insurance policy Dallas is taking out against positions already with potentially high-paid players already on the roster.

Then in the case of this team currently bringing in PacMan..

..nobody can miss the implication being passed around that TNew has a new deal coming up and that PacMan is considered a starter CB if he's healthy and not dealing with more suspensions as 2009 approaches.

Plus we also are talking about drafting a CB in the 1st rd. tomorrow, but coaching it as an 'insurance policy' against PacMan goofing up. But it's also aimed at TNew and any new deal he maybe asking after 2008 and also Henry's future has been mumbled about with his deal up after next year.

So there is more insurance being loaded up..at both CB positions right now, even though TNew and Henry have played very well together when they both were healthy.

So I'd understand TNew being a little grouchy about things.

His guarranteed big payday is not gaining anymore momentum at this point no matter how good he plays this season or how much he talks in the media about wanting to be paid as a Top 5 CB or better.

Dallas is overloading the position just like they have at LBer and there just isn't going to be enough positions or cap money to go around after this season to pay all these DBs like they were Rock Stars.

And if Dallas goes out and drafts a SS early..Roy Williams is definitely being targeted as is Hamlin..another guy not signed past this year and Dallas could be taking a sit-back-and-see attitude about Hamlin and Roy Williams and their futures, too for 2009.

So all of the DBs right now are not stupid. Not a single one has a contract more than 1-2 years long and after this season, if Dallas has enough candidates in house, there could be some huge turnover and disappointed DBs smacking their lips in anticipation of the 'golden parachute contract' not ever arriving..

And instead..leaving for new digs after 2008 with empty pockets.

Roy Williams and his recent less than average performances has caused this team to be much more cautious about signing too big a deal for too long anymore.

And TNew is in line to feel that pressure, right after Hamlin and MBIII feel it first.

We'll see.

Terrence Newman is going to cash a small fortune next year whether it's with the Cowboys or another team. If the Cowboys let him hit the open market without a tag, he'll make even more money. He can pretty much name his asking price and his location on the open market.

If Newman is flustered with the sitaution it probably has absolutely nothing to do with money. It probably has more to do with the fact he knows he's going to get asked 10,000 Pac Man questions a day from here to eternity from the media, and he has to carry water for a guy who could likely not even play for the team next year.

heard the whole thing

newman said he is the leader of the defense then changed it to his is the leader of the dbs.

Said he would walk up to pacman and welcome him into the fold be sure he got the defense and would do everything he could to help pacman.

Said that some guys prolly won't reach out like that and that there may be guys pissed off about him being there.

He said he has never met pacman and is giving him the benefit of the doubt as a person and he wants it to work out.

any one bad mouthing t.new in this thread is out of line, one of the most stand up honest guys on the team. I have always been impressed with his willingness to say what is on his mind.

I agree. I heard it too. It was a good interview imo.

Newman didnt seem to have "disdain" imo (who cares even if he did? can understand that. A lot of athletes in the final years of their deals have at least some level of "disdain")...but Newman was clearly trying to say the right things in the interview (he's always been a team guy)

Love our (no hands) T-new, but come on, he's just pissed off because
he went from having Dallas over a barrel to there being no barrel.

I hope we sign him next year. You don't hear Henry *****in.

Dude's gotta play some football and stop worrying about his Huge pay day that he claims not to care about.

How'd Tom Brady fare after getting paid? Peyton Manning? T.O.?

Tom Brady, Payton Manning, T.O, and Terrance Newman. You really want to go there? Three of those players have Super Bowl appearances. Three have MULTIPLE Pro Bowl appearances. Three have Hall of Fame numbers. Two of them you'd build a team around. Don't rack your brain trying to figure out which category Newman fits in.

Should we let Ware go when his contract is up? Why sign anyone to a new contract if they might quit with a new deal?

Re-signing Ware is a reason I'd be willing to (if needed) to let Newman go. I referenced that in my first post also. A top pass rusher is worth the risk. A corner that's will (possibly) be demanding 10 million a year? Not so much. The theory of overvaluing a CB hasn't worked out real well for San Francisco or Denver. I'd prefer the safer bet. That's just me.

And when did Newman "turn it up" to get paid? Has that happened yet?

In my original post I said (and I quote) "if he all of a sudden becomes all-world...". The word "if" is kind of imperative. I never said he DID turn it up to get paid.

Maybe you need to keep up.

If you hadn't done such a masterful job of flexing your ignorance this quote wouldn't look so ridiculous. Someone here is having trouble keeping up. It isn't me though, genius.

And IR, this

is sig-worthy.

Yeah I read the quote. I read it when it was actually posted. The problem is I never threw anyone under the bus to "come to the defense of a scumbag who's never played a down for the Cowboys". You can search all you want but you won't find a single post of mine that would even remotely hint at such an idea.

There are junkies, felons, politicians, and dropouts who put years of effort into reaching your vast level of stupid. Yet, to you, it comes so easy. Life's so unfair.

he has been...he's been good here since the day he set foot off the plane from Kansas St...he's been jobbed out of two pro bowls, and made it last yr

Newman has been solid since his arrival. There is absolutely no doubt about it. And, I agree that he's been given a raw deal as far as Pro Bowls go (he actually deserved the Pro Bowl in 06 more than he deserved it last year. That's not to say he didn't deserve it last year). I think the problem a lot of people have with Newman is the fact that he doesn't create the amount of turnovers that a player of his caliber typically generates. I understand that he is tested less than his teammates because his talent virtually dictates it, which by default will affect his opportunities. But Sanders, Samuel, Bailey, Green were also the better corners on their teams and generated the turnovers. That more, than anything, is what hurts Newman in the whole Pro Bowl charade. My question, originally, had more to do with this aspect of his game. I don't think he can shut a WR down any better than he already does it. If his INT numbers all of a sudden go through the roof is when a person starts to wonder "where has THIS been". I'm not implying that his INTs will do just that but more of a hypothetical "wondering out loud" type of question.

the guys one of the top 2 or 3 cover CB's in the league...and unlike alot of other CB's, he doesnt tackle like a pansy either...on top of the fact that he plays hurt and is a great leader in the lockerroom

David

That's the part of Tnew's game I absolutely love. I was watching a youtube clip of Newman about a week ago and I just loved the way that he approached a tackle. NO FEAR! He gets after it for sure. I do question his leadership, though (just as much as I question Roy Williams and Greg Ellis'). I'll honestly admit that. It's not that I have a glaring "gotcha" reason for it. It's just more of a gut feeling that we are sorely lacking defensive leadership and Newman's a part of that group.

With all due respect, can Newman really get any better, though?

He's already as good as you can get when it comes to shutting guys down. I think his only real weakness is his hands and/or ball-hawking ability, and I don't see how those two traits suddenly "come" to a player.

EDIT: Never thought of superpunk's theory. I stand corrected.

You just made perfect sense. I have studied Newman as much as anyone in here, and he's a terrific corner, but drops off technique-wise when it comes to seizing the opportunity to force an interception and actually hold on to the ball while doing so.

Basically a turnover on defense. skinsscalper makes excellent points as well in his above post.

Jerry pays his own and I see TNew as being no different than Witten, Romo, Flo, Gurode, Brady James and Roy Williams (#38). I truly believe that Newman will get his long term deal with the Cowboys after next season.

I think Henry is the odd man out especially if Jerry gets a CB in the first or second round tomorrow. Really can't see a scenario where he is starting at the end of the season in '08. Adam Jones and the rookie would probably have surpassed him on the depth chart by playoff time. Just my two pennies.

I agree IR. The guy he's going to affect is Henry. Which is sad. Henry's been a pretty "good soldier" in his time here. I do think we need an upgrade over Henry, but the fact that Pacman is part of that process is a little nauseating. I thought the Cowboys made the right move in gambling for Pacman, because it's a low risk/high reward situation. The peripheral effects are not so easy to swallow, if you think about it too much.

Pacman is signed for peanuts for 4 years; I really do not see how this effects Newman. the on ewho needs to worry is Henry especially if we draft a corner too.

Samuels and Bailey I'll give you, but Darrell Green was never a high INT guy. Newman has 16 INT's in his first 5 years. Green had 17 INT's in his first five years.

And that's some pretty rarefied air. That's like knocking DeMarcus Ware because he's not LT, Reggie White or Michael Strahan.

You got to give me Sanders, though.

I'll add that Ware just may be the next Reggie White or Michael Strahan (LT might be a little much).

I never said Newman was as good as those guys. You talked about players who tank after they get big money, and I gave you some examples of players who didn't. I used big names because they were the first that came to mind, but if it helps you understand, substitute Andre Gurode or Bigg for those guys.

The point is that not all players quit or drop off just because they sign a big extension. Get it now?

I'll give you Sanders, but again, he's a once in the history of football type of player. Again, it's like knocking on Ware because he's not made the same kind of impact that Lawrence Taylor did. Who has?

And on Bailey, it's not until the last couple of years that he's really turned into a a turnover machine. His INT totals his first five years were 18 .. again, compared to Newman's 16. Rod Woodson had 16 through his first 5 years.

I'm not quite sure what people expect. Nobody in the history of football has ever put up a string of consistent 5+ INT seasons. Even the elite, HOF CBs typically get 3 or 4 a year (in a good year) and then occasionally break out a with 8 INT season here or there. But Darrell Green never had more than 5 in a season, and he played like 18 years.
