The franchise tag is different. If they extend Smith after this season, his 5th year option is still there. The extension starts in 2027. So there is an extra year not counting the extension. Once a player finishes a franchise tag, there are no extra years.Sort of....Its not apples to apples you're right, but Philly still would have the franchise tag instead of the 5th year option to use if they wanted to. For OL the franchise tag is $23M, Tyler Smiths 5th year tag was $21M.
In general Philly seems to lock up guys quicker than the Cowboys do. Certainly not all the time, they've certainly had some guys they've waited on as well. They signed wentz, extended him and drafted his back up by the time the Cowboys extended Dak. They also tend to lock non 1st round picks up after year 3 while the Cowboys just waiting until the last second to sign a guys like OSA and even injured players like Steele and Gallup.
The difference is certain teams have no issue paying the bill later in order to try to win now…..while Jerry and son don’t want to risk a couple of bad seasons, then Netflix won’t want to do specials on him. Can’t have that.As to the OP, Philly currently has:
50 mil QB
20 mil RB
30 mil WR
20 mil WR
23 mil LT
25 mil RT
21 mil LG
17 mil C
And a 20 mil dollar TE they may/may not move on from.
But yeah Stephen and a couple of confused posters here keep crying wolf on the inability to manipulate the cap year after year.
While other teams polish trophies and the CAP Boogie Man never quite seems to catch up to them for some reason.
Some people are very good at the same jobs others are very poor at.
Cowboys!
oh good. We're with the browns and dolphins. Atta boy Jerry.Browns & Dolphins 32 years
Yeah I agree its not an exact comp, but I think we still see a general roster building philosophy difference there between the two organizations. I'll just never understand waiting on a guy like OSA only to still extend him. His 2023 and 2024 were nearly identical. Its not like he became a significantly better player last year. Same issue with Bland. No reason to not extend or trade him now.The franchise tag is different. If they extend Smith after this season, his 5th year option is still there. I think they waited on Osa because they weren't sure about him. I don't think they planned on extending him. When teams wait for contracts to expire, they have or had doubts.
You called it ...... they probably have a "we love Jerry" discord.Wait until the usual suspects come here and say "well the player has to want to sign early." Its not the front office's fault!
No it's not idiocy or incompetence, there are so many teams that conduct their contract the way the Cowboys do theirs and some that doit the way the argils do theirs. There's no right or wrong way to do it, you either get it done or you don't, you either pay more or you don't.Eagles Cam Jurgens
Dallas Tyler Smith
The Eagles have signed their Pro Bowl center to a deal before he gets to the end of his current one, and is likely saving significant money as compared to Dallas, who will pick up the 5th year option at more than what Jurgens will average on his deal....then wait for the 5th year to be over before negotiating a new deal, which will cost much more 2 years from now. It's pure idiocy and incompetence.
Sweat, Williams, Bechton, and Slay, all big contributors last season they could not afford to re-sign. Goedert is on the block as his contract is expensive and they have difficult decisions to make. “that day” is now. They are making prudent decisions with an eye on their financial future. They have 20 draft picks over the next two drafts. They are a well managed operation. The difference is certain teams have no issue paying the bill later in order to try to win now…..while Jerry and son don’t want to risk a couple of bad seasons, then Netflix won’t want to do specials on him. Can’t have that.
Between the willingness to borrow from the future and the money that the clowns insist on rolling each year instead of spending, how much more cap dollars are they playing with each season than Dallas is? Probably at least in the 40-60 range (2-3 additional solid starters). That was abundantly clear on the field last season and will be again for at least another one or two.
Either way, which one seems to be working better? It ain’t the plan Stephen speaks of as if it’s a proven winning philosophy. Still waiting for all these “tough decisions” Philly has coming….and maybe that day comes. The rings will help with the disappointment of dealing with a rebuild I’m sure.
I've hated Philly more than any other NFCE rival my entire life, but 7 of 8 years with playoff appearances. 3 super bowl appearances in that time and two super bowl victories. They are the standard in the NFC right now.No it's not idiocy or incompetence, there are so many teams that conduct their contract the way the Cowboys do theirs and some that doit the way the argils do theirs. Philly does not set the standard, stop looking over the fence at them and wishing we were them, they got lucky this season, now they start their down hill plummet. they will return to their train wreck ways soon enough
Seems as if they are picking and choosing who they want to pay and who they want to let walk and aren’t too worried about it, while the kid uses it as an excuse to not try to get any better.Sweat, Williams, Bechton, and Slay, all big contributors last season they could not afford to re-sign. no we can"t and shouldn't admire the eagles. I'm not acknowledging anything they have down, we are not overmatched either.I would agree with this. Eagles have won what? Two super bowls in the last 8 years or whatever? We can hate that team but still admire and acknowledge how better they are run/managed. We are so overmatched.
I disagree with that vehemently! I will hate them, the Commanders(they will always be the Commanders to me) and giants, I have been doing it since the 60s and will continue to do so, so no they will never get anything from me but hatredI've hated Philly more than any other NFCE rival my entire life, but 7 of 8 years with playoff appearances. 3 super bowl appearances in that time and two super bowl victories. good point thank you henryno we can"t and shouldn't admire the eagles. I'm not acknowledging anything they have down, we are not overmatched either.
Watch the eagles hit bottom soon
It just absolutely makes the front office look they are in another world.Wait until the usual suspects come here and say "well the player has to want to sign early." Its not the front office's fault!
If you understood it, you'd be qualified to work for Jerry. It makes no sense. If it takes you that long to evaluate whether you want to keep a player longer term, then perhaps talent evaluation isn't for you (meaning JJ)Yeah I agree its not an exact comp, but I think we still see a general roster building philosophy difference there between the two organizations. From the 2021 draft Philly has already extended Smith, Micah is still waiting on his extension. Landon Dickerson has been extended for a year, OSA just got his. You can certainly find some examples that are the opposite way, but typically Philly is way more open to extending guys early and quicker to move on from guys as well.
I couldnt agree more. Hes a guy who didn't miss a lot of time with injury or anything. They had three years to evaluate the player on and off the field. Hes also a guy who seemed to take a team friendly deal in the end so its not like he was holding out to maximize his deal. This is just Jerry/Stephen Jones not wanting to spend money until they absolutely have to. Philly has ownership willing to put up as much cash as they need to improve their team.If you understood it, you'd be qualified to work for Jerry. It makes no sense. Have been a Cowboys fan for over 40 years and if I stop being one I will be done with the NFL altogether. However, it's obvious that when it comes to maximizing the cap space and putting a legit contender on the field our front office is hapless. Meanwhile you can kneel and bob all over the Jones boys all you want.I'll make this easy for you go be an Eagles fan I don't really care what's going on with them I just don't seriously your green drool and your Jalen hurts jersey sticking out bro don't give me that nonsense every damn day i'm seeing something posted about the Eagles in here and I'm sick of it so yeah I'm going to take it out on you you live in Florida you seem to be in love with the Eagles why don't you just be honest and come out of the closet as your Eagle fan dallas isn't the place for you apparently if you don't like anything about the team move on....
But let's wait and see what Tyler Smith's contract ends up being before you say it's gonna be a lot more and what is your definition of a lot more but I also wanna see your credentials at team building are you a gm or you just look around and leave and see what reported and then act like you know what you're talking about and in reality you're not a front office person you don't run a $10 billion nfl team so you can't walk in their shoes and sit here and post as if you're some kind of expert I don't need to know what other teams are doing as long as we feel they competitive team I don't care and Tyler Smith is on our team and that's all that matters...
The rest of it we leave up to the professionals you know what professionals the actual people are right who are running something that size and you have no idea what it takes to run seriously $10 billion corporation I mean we're talking about big huge amount of emp[oyees and business to take care of..
Let me just ask for one thing when you're burning your jerseys or giving them to charity and you're actually buy your eagle stuff you'd let us know what it looks like on you![]()
Except Dallas will let them play out their last year...like they have done repeatedly. It has cost them money every time. It will cost them money with Parsons and it will cost them money with Smith. And then they will moan about not having any money to sign people. Endless circle jerk! This is Tyler Smith's 4th year. Dallas will probably sign him after this year. Cam doesn't have a 5th year option, that's why they signed him after 3 years. They didn't do anything special.
Except that its true....Wait until the usual suspects come here and say "well the player has to want to sign early." Its not the front office's fault!
