DL, To rotate or not

I like the rotation approach for a couple of reasons. I do buy the idea is keeps players fresher and we have a bunch of good, not great players. That favors a rotation approach.

Another factor that I don't think has been mentioned is that rotation makes it harder for opposing Offensive Coordinators to game plan against our defense. If you think about the games where David Irving played 1T and made plays, some part of that had to be that the opponent hadn't set up their scheme against him playing at that spot.

Other than situational substitutions, I feel that running DL in and out of the game disrupts their rhythm. I don't buy the resting them excuse, they spend as much energy running in and out of the game as the do playing. If you have 4 guys that are better then the others, keep them in and ride them. Long drives, OK, rest your stud when he needs it and stick his butt back in the game. The question may be, do we have 4 clearcut starters?
Anyway, that's how I see it, any opinions?

The biggest plus is the "fresh legs" approach, but there is the possibility you lose continuity by shuffling all four positions around that much.

Granted the DL does not need to work together in sync as much as the OL needs to be in lock step together, but there is some need. We also run a lot of choreographed stunts and having different combinations running them could yield varied results.

All in all though, a rotation is fine if you have a deep DL like the 1990s teams did.

But we all know this team does not even have one true stud. There are some okay to decent, but just one stud starter means you have less rotation.

When there is huge concern when a Tyrone Crawford goes down, then you need some better talent. That alone is more of a concern to me than someone subbing in and out.

Teams with good linemen don't rotate as much. Nyg and min are good examples.

We have to win with numbers since there is a lack of studs but a plethora of slightly above average guys.

I'm pro sub with this group.

Its pretty simple in theory. Since we dont have anyone that is great the best way to maximize who we have is to only use guys at their particular strength and when they are fresh. And also to keep everyone as fresh as possible for the end of the game. NO doubt if we had a couple of studs, the rotation nonsense would be thrown out the window in certain instances.
