DMN: BLOG: Isaiah Stanback wants to put off surgery until after season

While I admire Stanback's courage and tenacity, if I'm the team I have to wonder if this is the best move.

I haven't had the luxury of seeing Stanback in practice every day, but he didn't show me a lot as a receiver before he was injured. Would he bring a lot to the position even if he's able to play?

I would think that playing with a bum shoulder would limit or completely prevent him from contributing on special teams. And if he's not doing that, is he even active on gameday?

And if he is on the opening day roster, how long would he last before he were to re-injure the shoulder? And if he were hurt later in the season, would a healthy receiver be available to replace him?

Regardless of what Stanback is trying to do, I still have questions regarding whether or not it's the right thing to do.

This is true stanback needs to go the way of Skyler Green.

For entirely different reasons. Man, I saw Skyler Green return exactly one kickoff and I knew he didn't have the talent to hang in this league. When a linebacker can change direction and still run down your KO returner, that's not a good sign. :laugh2:

Stanback is the 5th receiver on this team at best.. He will see no time as a receiver this year unless TO or Crayton go down.. If activated all he was going to do is return kicks. Put off the surgery...

Does anyone know what surgery they did last year as there are several of varying degrees of invasiveness.

If he already had one of the major stabilization procedures and already re-dislocated, that is a pretty bad sign.

Not positive, but I'm pretty sure it was not of the major variety.

Yea and the cowboys was so high on this pick comparing him to Dante Hall.....that worked out well for us.....

I'm skeptical on this one.

Stanback is facing enough challenges to be productive without playing with one hand tied behind his back.

he might as well get the surgery cause we all know this softy will get hurt again.

We need to stop with these projects and draft a WR this is starting to become a joke.

Sheesh why the Stanback hate?

I realize he hasn't done anything yet but apparently he has whizzed in some of you guys wheaties.

If he needs the surgery he should get it. He is not floating on some huge contract. He needs to take care of his financial asset which is his body. He would be risking serious injury to be a kick off return guy for us and thats not worth it.

Felix Jones needs to return kicks, he knows how to and is built for contact.

The only downside to this is he is at pretty high risk for another dislocation given he has already had two. Each time you dislocate there is more damage to the labrum and potential for damage to the rotator cuff, head of the humerus, shoulder socket and nerves.

He probably should have had this done last offseason as even after one dislocation at his age there is an extremely high risk of recurrence.

There used to be a promising safety behind Charlie Waters and Cliff Harris named Randy Hughes who used to have his shoulder pop out on contact. It ended what was a promising career.

Maybe he (Stanback) should just have the surgery now and see if it can be corrected before it does become a recurring problem.

Well I don't know how long you should hold on to a injury prone converted QB to WR/KR that hasn't shown much as a KR or WR. Now he's going to try and play through his injury which can only drive his stock down Honestly I'm tired of seeing this QB turn WR that we keep taking on.

If I were the Cowboys, I might consider putting him on IR. He wouldn't count against the 53 and from what I've seen this year, I'm not certain he will even contribute much to this years club. But this guy has to learn to run with the football. He just holds that ball out there way to free. Can't contribute if your laying the ball on the carpet all the time. That's no good.

I dont know why the Cowboys wouldnt persuade him to have surgery....putting Stanback on IR will protect the Cowboys from losing him to another team and also free up another spot such as maybe for a extra CB.

After his surgery...he can practice running routes and working on the little things that a WR should know.

We have a few players here that can do KO duties

y would we keep an extra CB if our WR went down for the year?

That’s the thing, he hasn't done anything and yet most people assume he has locked a spot on the roster based on his potential and draft investment. The hate stems from not addressing the position to see how this guy develops. Me thinks he'll make the team (on IR preferably) but I’m not expecting any contributions from him if he’s on the active roster.

Crayton worked out just fine. But he was a 7th rounder.

Premature eveluation. None of them learned a thing about writing off Bradie James. Their poor girlfriends.

Because....for one....its where we have the most talent....and I assume the coaches want to keep the top 53.

a 6th or 7th corner might be a pretty good special teams player. IMHO...I rather keep a Oglesby or a Brown then having a hurting WR like Stanback take up a roster spot.

Will will see.....Owens....Crayton and Hurd out there ....very rarely do we go four wide.....we have Felix and two backup TE's that can pick up the slack....if we need to spread it out.

IMHO I rather see Stanback now go on the IR.....

Woody Dantzler didn't and Crayton wasn't as injury prone. He actually was showing something as a WR during his 2nd year.

We wrote off plenty of players early and that didn't seem to turn it around.....

That makes no sense koiser gets injured lets get an extra LB.....If we don't pick up an extra WR our WR corps will be TO Crayton and Hurd.

I tend to agree with those who think that Stanback and the Cowboys may be better off letting him get the surgery sooner rather than later.

If Stanback is going to have to play with a harness all season, and if he may not be able to return KOs as well as before, it may be better to get a more experienced veteran in the next week or let a guy like Jefferson or Amendola take that last WR spot.

I guess the question is how effective is Stanback going to be playing with a harness? And he's already pretty raw as it is as a WR. His play as a KO returner was likely how he was going to make his "main" mark this season.
