DMN: BLOG: James Marten cut to make room for Mike Jefferson

I think the last 10 drafts have produced 1 starting olman. My question is why now? This came a week too late. Its the same bs roster moves jerry made back in the day. This team will always have this problem as coaches try to keep their jobs by givin praise to jerry draft bust.

I think they wanted to wait for teams to get the rosters set, wouldnt be surprised if they didnt pick him back up early next week.

Since getting two long-time NFLers in the 1998 draft (Flozell Adams and Oliver Ross), our OL picks have been a disaster.

James Marten (3)
Doug Free (4)
Pat McQuistan (7)
E.J. Whitley (7)
Rob Petitti (6)
Jacob Rogers (2)
Stephen Peterman (3)
Al Johnson (2)
Justin Bates (7)
Andre Gurode (2)
Tyson Walter (6)
Matt Lehr (5)
Char-ron Dorsey (7)
Solomon Page (2)
Kelvin Garmon (7)

Maybe we should stop trying to find offensive linemen at the end of the draft.

Matt Lehr was a solid backup for a handful of years....for a 5th rounder, that is good production.

Also, Petermann is a starter in Detroit now isnt he?

I mean Colombo was a waste for the Bears, but turned out to be a great pickup for us. Davis was a waste for the Cards, but has been a great pickup for us. Kosier was a solid pickup as well. I am hoping Holland can continue this trend.

If we kept Glenn we would prob have 6 trophies rite now.
How do you figure? Are you suggesting a played they couldn't pass a physical could be the difference maker this season and turn us into a super bowl champion?

Ouch.

Hmm Marten reminds me of someone else....hmmm...a certain someone took alot of flack for that...

On another note, I am dissapointed. I thought marten would move over to left guard and be the player he was in college.

I hope we dont cut mike jefferson in a week. That would really make the marten pick horrible.
What do we do with Jefferson when all the WRs come back healthy? Keep 6 on the roster?

cutting him says as much about how good our o-line situation is as it does about wasting a draft pick--let's see if anyone takes him

He's talking about Aaron Glenn, and you have to wonder what would have happened if we hadn't let him go... after watching Reeves and Jones get abused all year.

I was wrong .... I assumed the coaches saw something in him to keep him on the roster.

I hate giving up on such a young player ..... but if he was stopping the progress of the team .... then it had to be done.
Obviously not only did they not see something, they didnt think much of his possible development that they were willing to risk him to waivers. The article states that they want to bring him back to the Practice squad. Whats the point? If he stinks, lets get a better developmental player on the practice squad

You gotta be kidding me. Aaron Glenn would have saved our year last year? Please. Reeves got abused by the G-Men but the offense lost the game of us.

Using Lehr and Peterman don't help your argument one bit.

Lerh: Best anyone could say about him is he was a solid backup. ANd that's with taking lord knows how much Steroids and HGH. How bad would he be if he didn't take the drugs?

Peterman: This one works against you two-fold.

1. The post you quoted says "Maybe we should stop trying to find offensive linemen at the end of the draft". Peterman was a third round pick, not someone taken "At the end of the draft".

2. Being a starter for a horrible team doesn't mean you're worth a crap. Proctor could go to detroit right now and take Peterman's job.

AARON Glenn... not TERRY Glenn.

Do we know how to draft o-linemen or what?

:starspin I was begining to think the same thing when it comes to o-linemen, and as a third rounder, I was hoping to see some contributions from him. So there goes another fairly high o-linemen pick, out the door. Hmmmm....

Well, we hit the jackpot with Flo, and thank god Gurode came through (eventually). Other than that, it's been bleak.

It's weird that we avoid drafting offensive linemen in the first round, where the group has a very high success rate, and are then forced to use free agency to pay top dollar for players.

We've just had bad luck trying to develop players selected in later rounds.

It was either him or Tony Curtis probably, since both have become 3rd stringers. I suppose Curtis has more upside or trade value...depending how you look at it.

Do you hear that?

It's the rest of the league laughing.

Why would they cut Curtis. You can't play with two TEs and while I'd like to see Hannah make the team he would be the 4th TE. He's not ready.

There are 32 2nd round picks every year. They can't all play 6-10 years.

Why didn't we cut Berger. He's been the only true back-up guard we've had and he couldn't even beat out Proctor to fill in for Kosier. Will Marten clear waivers? I think Berger would have.

Every year I have a player or two in college I target as kind of a wishlist for the Cowboys draft. This year my guy is Herman Johnson, a 6'7" 350 lb guard from LSU.

We are about 50/50 ins the last 15 years in drafting O-linemen in the early rounds.. Larry Allen, Flozell Adams, and Andre Gurode are Pro Bowlers. Not so much with Stephen Peterman, Jacob Rogers, and James Marten. Al Johnson was decent. Solomon Page and Shane Hannah didn't really pan out.

You know something that has crossed my mind with the recent movement on the offensive line is the future of Marc Colombo. I like the guy, and I really appreciate the nastiness he brings, but I have a feeling he's not going to be here next year...

What I'm wondering is if a guy like Holland doesn't allow you to move Davis out to RT next year if you can't resign Colombo and the young guys don't step up?
