The remaining X-factor of the Dallas Cowboys' 2016 draft is linebacker Jaylon Smith.
Taken in the second round out of Notre Dame despite a serious knee injury, Smith missed all of his rookie season, and some feared that he may never fully recover from the injury he suffered in college.

At the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was very high on the ongoing recovery of the young linebacker saying Smith 'can play right now.'

In SportsDay's recent Cowboys position series, Brandon George said:

"The Cowboys may need to add a potential starting linebacker in free agency or the draft if they believe Jaylon Smith won't be ready to play at a high level come September."

But if Jerry Jones' confidence is any indication, Smith could be right alongside Sean Lee and Co. at the linebacker position next season.

Lots and lots of interesting stuff here.

He mentions two positions for retaining free agents. That lead me to believe he was referring to an either/or decision at corner back and safety.

Either Carr or Claiborne - and it sounded like Carr.

Either Church or Wilcox, to which I would speculate Wilcox based on youth, upside, and price.

But then he said "not necessarily" when asked if it was strictly about defense. This makes you wonder about Williams and the WR2 position. I have to say I hope they don't pay him any sort of big money. But they could look to fill that spot in free agency.

But one thing that stuck out to me was him talking about getting his "War Daddy" pass rusher. He seemed to lean towards trading up in the draft. And based on the youth of the team, that move makes sense. But it got me wondering.

Mixing in a Romo trade, the #28 pick, and the fact that striking gold on Prescott is essentially a bonus 1st round draft pick, and might allow you to think about trading a future #1, what would the formula be for this team to move all the way up to #1 overall and draft Myles Garrett?

I know it would be a crazy formula overall, but based on that interview, I can't help but think that such a move might be considered.

I'm I'm well I'm confused, what's going on here? Seems like we keep going
back and fourth here depending on who's talking, and Jaylons tweets haven't helped.

I wonder If browns trade #1 pick to a team who is high on Trubisky or Watson and go in full tank mode for the USC QB in 2018. I could then see the 49ers either taking the QB that wasn't taken or trading the pick to a team who wants a QB. Wonder if Romo is willing to play for the Bears. They have a pretty good Oline and a solid run game. They was 8th in fewest allowed sacks this past season and that was with a bunch of backup level QBs who cant read a defense and make the correct changes to plays like Romo.

Bears can then get their QB to groom with our 28th overall pick or trade up a few spots ahead of the Texans to get Mahomes or Kizer. But like you pointed out. Just something to wonder. Anything can happen on draft day.

The War Room needs to pull another Johnny Manziel maneuver on Jerry if he tries to get Garrett. Don't get me wrong - I would love for him to be a Cowboy. But the cost just isn't worth it. Not even close.

This is just insane.

Next week we'll hear something different, good or bad, and there will be people buying whatever it is followed a month later by something else good or bad and people will buy that.

For the love of God just let it play out Jerry.

I think Jerry put himself on a leash......but Garrett and Stephen can tug on it. McClay gets his attention.

I strongly suspect they have a program for acquiring and keeping talent. And they've stuck to it lately. Jerry's been squeezed.
