I don't think anyone is all that upset at the idea of getting a 2nd rounder for Miles.

I'd go on record to say that I am.

This team has invested three years in this guy and I'd like to see a return on that investment.

He's a talented, hard-working kid who is one the verge of getting his opportunity to play.

It would be a shame to see him get that opportunity elsewhere.

Add that to this team's inability to draft receivers and I'd take the 'devil I know'.

Then answer this question. Why do you think Austin is worth a 2nd round pick?

Bottom line: you don't give high draft picks away based on POTENTIAL.[/quote]

Not sure I understand your question or how it relates to my post.

Each year pro football teams do just that. The "give away"/exercise high draft picks on College players based ENTIRELY on potential.

unless it was the Patriots getting Wes Welker. Miami got a 2 and 7th............rest was history.

I just saying....teams aren't that stupid. They watch games and pre-season films. Teams just don't give up a 2nd rounder for nothing.

I'll pretty much guarantee that Dallas wouldn't sign Torry Holt even if we let Austin go. If Austin does leave, it would definitely force the Cowboys to use one of those 2nd round picks on a WR..

At this point we really don't have any choice but to match the Jets offer. Taking the pick will only force us to draft a WR and we know that history. Releasing TO made this decision an easy one.

Depends on what the offer is, I don't think our hands are tied at all.

Before this everyone was talking about all the weapons we have, now the offense hinges on Miles?

What has Austin done in college? What has Austin done in the NFL? He's shown flashes of being a reliable #2 but he isn't consistent enough to warrant a 2nd round draft pick.

That's more than I can say for a 2nd round pick from college who has NEVER played a down in NFL...against elite competition.

POTENTIALLY.. and neither are top 10, top 15 picks, which means that potential is even less likely.

Nobody knows what they will do. On the other hand, there's an existing book on Austin and what he can do.

An existing book of all of 18 catches, mutliple injuries, in 3 years in the league for an UDFA WR. I'm sure that the potential, of some of the guys projected in the second, are just as good as that.

SLATEmosphere;2720745 said:
I think he might wheel n deal to get that 17th pick using Austin..Don't ask me how, but I'm sure he wants that first back. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

He wants it, I'm sure, but any team giving up a 1st rounder for Austin, the UDFA with a career tally of all of 18 catches, would have to be ran by guys who are complete idiots. Only a completely ignorant moron would give up a first rounder for Miles Austin at this point. Now if his career tally was something like 250+ catches in 3 years then a 1st rounder wouldn't sound so stupid.

Miles Austin + Tashard Choice for the 17th pick.

Take it or leave it Jetsons...otherwise we match!

How do you like them apples? :)

You spoiled the bunch with that package.

Harvin is off our Draft board. He's one of 3 completely removed and no chance we would take.

Ahhh...I didn't know, when I responded to that thread 5 days ago, what in the box meant.

This thread has been hilarious and troubling all at the same time.

First let me say that I like Austin, and his potential, a lot. I really do. I think the guy is a good guy and might one day be something special. However his potential to be a quality #2 WR, at this point, isn't any better than a guy like Nicks, or Brey, or Britt who are far more polished WR's coming out of college than Austin is. They're coming out of college at the same level, probably higher, in skill set at WR as Austin who has taken 3 years to get there cause of being an UDFA and playing at a much smaller school.

If the Jets want to give up a 2nd round pick for a guy who wasn't drafted and has all of 18 career receptions that's ok with me. I'd gladly use their pick to move up just a bit in the second round and snag any of the guys at WR like Nicks, Brey, Britt, etc that would be in that area. I'd be willing to say right now that I believe they'd give us at least 20 catches in their rookie year, as well.

I really like Austin, a lot, but if someone wants to give me a 2nd rounder for a kid whose not proven a whole lot in his 3 years, other than he can flash some brilliance at times but spends a lot of time on the injuried list as well, then I'm not going to be overly hurt by it.

I would take a second for Miles just like would have taken a 2nd for Barber last year.

You pick this guy up as a undrafted free agent and get a second rounder for him great. The cowboys need a shifty fast receiver like Percy Harvin or Quan Cosby. Crayton will be the second receiver anyway. Austin has showed great flashes but he can't seem to stay on the field.
Amen brother.Austin isnt that great.I dont understand why peeps think he is so fast either,he isnt.

If they think Miles is the answer he's not going anywhere. Plus why give up the 3 years that we have invested in this kid? For a lousy 2nd round pick? I've seen a lot of people say we could take out 2's and move into the 1st. To get who???? This draft to me is weak after the top 15.

No way I let Austin go...he's a soldier and a good team player...we need more players like him.

I think if they offer a little bit too pricey a deal that Jerry will gladly take the second rounder for a WR who may not even take the second receiver spot from Crayton anyway.

He might but he's got just as good a chance of becoming injuried, again, as he does of showing off some more flashes of brilliance.

Ouch.. ! Who are the other two ?

By the way, there must be some serious flaws for Harvin to be off our board.

Apparently he has attitude problems and he failed a drug test at the combine. The two things must have combined to be enough to remove him from our board.

We haven't invested anything in Miles Austin. The guy wasn't even drafted. If we can get a 2nd round pick for a guy who had 18 receptions last season and 3 TD's. I'll take it. Multiple WR's in this draft can match and do better than Austin in 09'.

huh? Stanback hasn't done anything against ANYBODY and no one is planning on giving up a 2nd rounder for him either. Your comment made no sense here.

WRs are a dime a dozen, but not successful ones. Rookie WRs rarely make an impact in the NFL. Miles has shown potential and an ability to get open, unlike the other WRs on this team. What is all the more impressibe is he was raw. coming into the league. And Miles already has two years in the offense and Romo's trust. There are reports that Romo didn't throw to Roy Williams, because he didn't have the trust yet. Who is going to guarantee the other WR we get earns Romo's trust next year. This team HAS to perform next year on offense, especially after the release of TO.
Miles also is a twinkie with injuries. With a good QB and a very good OLINE any WR will have a great year.

Yeah, we could get the next Robert Meachem...

For every good receiver drafted, there are at least two busts.

That ratio doubles when you factor in that it's the Cowboys doing the drafting.

They draft receivers almost as well as they do offensive linemen.
