If Austin ends up going to the Jets, I entirely blame Jerry for this whole situation. HE was the one who threw Austin's name into the NATIONAL MEDIA about how he's basically going to replace T.O., and how the Cowboys have all these high hopes for him this season. Jerry should have shut his mouth and maybe none of this would have happened.

I highly doubt the Jets do a lot of tabloid scouting to fill their roster.

Then how is Austin getting all this national attention? Because of his CAREER HIGH 13 receptions last season? Or maybe it's is effectness to be injury-prone every season? No, it's Jerry putting his name in the national spotlight so the whole league knows about him.

Maybe in some grand scheme to find talent the Jets have a few people on the payroll who's job it is to go around and find players to bring in.

Maybe not.

the jets gm mike tannenbaum is a close friend of parcells.

the jets need wr's.

miles austin is talented and young and is restricted.

So its not really that hard to figure out there intrest in him. All tannenbaum has to do is pick up the phone and call parcells or even todd haley for that matter and I am sure they will give him excellent reviews.

Really?

Why is it always Jerry fault? I can understand maybe blaming him for not putting a higher tender on him.....but blaming him because he hyped the player up to the media.....seriously? The hate Jerry Jones gets.

Teams know other teams players....they dont need Jerry Jones to boast a player potential to convince them.

I don't want to lose Austin because he has good potential. But, he hasn't done squat yet. Nor has he had much opportunity. So if we get a 2nd round pick for someone who hasn't accomplished anything yet, that's not a bad thing. He's had a lot of time to develop and it's put up time for him this coming season. If we match a contract and he doesn't put up, then that's trouble. If he blossoms next year on the Jets, at least we got a 2nd round pick for it. So I'm not up for mtahcing unless the contract is extremely reasonable.

If Miles Austin is gone, look out. This offense just lost it's deep threat and our WR corp would be one of the slowest in the league. Crayton would move back to number 2, this time without TO. Sam Hurd can't get any separation as a number 3 even against the likes of Jacques Reeves. Teams aren't going to have to drop a safety back to prevent the deep play, because the corners can match any of our receivers speed for speed. We have just made the run defense a lot tougher. Jason Garrett is going to definitely have to re-work his whole offensive philosophy. If this guy succeeds, he will earn accolades of being brilliant, but if he does anything like he did last year, we are looking at an average offense. How are any of our slow receivers going to get separation, when the play breaks down and Romo is running for his life trying to make something happen?

Why does everyone think Austin is so good?He isnt all that and he is injury prone.A second rounder for him would be worth it,we could get a nice speedy WR at 52,ala Desean Jackson.Every seems to forget that our number 2 will be Crayton anyway.

Is DeSean Jackson on the trading block for a 2nd rounder?

And Crayton isn't a #2, he only plays like #2.

He may have been decent with Owens drawing constant double-teams, but out current #1 receiver doesn't have that type of respect from opponents.

Matching the Jets offer would get Austin locked up long term to probably a smaller contract than waiting till he is an unrestricted free agent next year. Especially if he has a good year.
Maybe Jerry is playing this one right - on a few different levels.

I know what you are saying but did Owens drawing double teams really help Crayton?

Crayton will never draw a double team so no matter what happens on the other side of the field, Crayton sill has to beat 1 man.

I think Owens drawing doubles helped Witten out more than anything. Not that Witten really needs it.

Oh so you have austins future already pegged. You know he is going to be a bad player?

Interesting since he has progressed every year he has been on the roster and is a favorite of garrett and romo.

but then again, garrett and romo suck according to this place so maybe your right, austin sucks too.

Don't know where Romo or Garrett come from in this conversation but Romo definitely doesn't suck. I think Romo's a top 5 QB and 2 years ago I though was 3rd best in the league. Even looked better than Manning 2 years ago in my opinion.

Don't know Austins future but I do know he has never caught more than 15 balls in a season, nor has he even started an NFL football game in that 3 year span. I think he has potential but I think a lot of Cowboy fans talk more of hope than fact and getting a 2nd rounder for him or keeping him is not a bad deal.

Another fact, in only 1 season has Austin played 16 games and there is a lot of hoopla around this community about he's going to have a big season while facing starting corners for his first time. There's a lot of unproven factors with Austin whether you want to admit it or not.

No need to get all jacked up and I never used the words "suck" and "Austin" in the same sentence other than you up until now. Think it's poor tact that you put words in peoples mouths. You're the jump the gun type, not me, so NO I don't have Autin's future pegged at all. Just accept reality that he isn't a proven WR and I won't be surprised when he comes back here because the Jets don't give a big enough offer to keep Jerry away or don't make an offer and give up their 2nd.

It would be nice if people just relaxed instead of get all emotional.

He's the GM, Owner and public face of the franchise... I'm not sure what you expect.

And in this particular instant, he did boast about the player, when he wasn't even under contract.

Exactly, all I'm saying is that Jerry's national praise of the guy certainly didn't have the situation. The media scrutinizes everyting Jerry Jones and the Cowboys do, so Jerry has to take blame here.

Greg

I think you may be right.

May have already been covered in this thread, but what is the $ difference between a 2nd round and 1st round tender?

Perhaps Jerry wanted to roll the dice on a 2nd rd tender, but at what cost?

Jerry has a contract in mind for Austin. What if the Jets double that?

How bad does Jerry want to keep him?

Now the other side of this is that making a 2nd rd tender puts Austin in a lower "bracket" for a long term deal offered by another team. Better chance that that long term deal is easier for Dallas to match and closer to what they'd really like to pay Austin over the next few years.

Its not emotional. Its being tired of seeing people just say false things. I am not a jump the gun type by the way either. That is a cheap tact by you.

I didnt say you said romo and garrett suck, its just the tone of this place that keeps regurgitating that.

and of course austin hasnt produced the big numbers yet, he has not yet had the opportunity. That is what he needs opportunity.

Him never starting doesnt hold any water, him not facing big time corners does but again I think that will be a challenge he meets this year.

Each year he has progressed and last year he looked like he had the makings of being a very good player. IN person when you are at the games you can see him beating his guy and getting open alot, but being the 3rd or 4th option he didnt see the ball that much.

Romo trusts him and will throw him the ball in tight spots and I think that says an awful lot. All young developing players are risky until they are given the opportunity. He may succeed and he may fail. I think, especially this year he deserves that opportunity here. He is big, explosive and can catch the ball. I am not sure what else you are looking for at the position especially when you throw in the fact that he is a veteran and has a great attitude.

It really comes down to do you trust your coaches and the player himself to develop or do you trust your scouts more to take that 52 and go get a player of equal or better talent who can play right now like austin. I really dont think that exists. I personally think MIles Austin is ready to go and There is no doubt in my mind he will be the number 2 wr, although I hate using that numbering system for wr.

Do any of you REALLY think that teams didn't know about Austin until Jerry started talking him up?

Come on. The second the off-season began you can bet teams were checking film on all the UFA and RFA players -- you make a list of RFAs and Austin would be on every team's top 10 list out of the gate. I sincerely doubt that there are teams that rely on interviews with Jerry for their scouting.

Really? A player that had 13 receptions last season and is always injury-prone? I don't see the value for a 2nd round pick. Jerry's interview certainly did not help. He should've kept his mouth shut about Austin. He should have used the phrase, "younger receivers," and not single out Austin.
