Bad idea.

If we don't have Austin we lose a guy who stretches the defense.

Teams will load up on us.
They will load up against us period. Miles has never seen the #1 corner on opposing teams. He being covered by a 3 or 4 maybe a 2 every now and then. He has yet to prove he can beat the top corners in this league so teams will likely play him man to man double Witten and load up against the run.

I like Miles Austin but I'd take the pick. Austin has potential but he is unproven and has had some injury concerns.

Again, if Austin is here I will root for him like crazy but I just don't think he's sure thing and/or worth a 2nd round pick.

Why?????

All it does is create another hole and you'll have to draft another receiver who is a way bigger question mark than him and most likely won't have the same measurables as Austin.

We've developed him so why would we do all that hardwork for the Jets?

One thing Jerry could do is take that extra pick and trade it for an established receiver. But who?

You can't do much with the 51st and 52 picks..you can move up to 28..it's not that great. I don't want Boldin or Edwards if that;s what your insuating lol..

THe 17th overall pick though??? I will take that in a hot second and getting Maclin..that would be the only scenario that makes sense to me trading Austin.

I am in complete agreement with you Slate. Only guy I would give up Austin for is Crabtree. And even he is not a guarantee.

Austin's upside is worth more than the 52 pick.
If they want him bad enough, I'm sure we could take their first in exchange for Austin and a 5th.

He's yet to prove anything but he has shown that if given the opportunity he can make plays.

He pretty much won the #2 job in preseason/camp last year and most likely would've opened up the season last year as the #2 had he not got hurt.

He is to good of a prospect just to give up for a 2nd round question mark.

I love Austin, but he's a question mark too

Take the draft pick and run. Miles Austin's worth may never be higher.
And it may get much higher.

Obviously but his risk is much lower.

These coaches know exactly what he is capable of. That is why he is getting this opportunity.

He basically won a game for us this past season too.

If the KC Chiefs can acquire a starting QB for a second round pick (the same compensation the Skins were asking for Campbell), then we can find a serviceable WR for that price too.

Wait can you dumb it down for me? lol I don't get the "poisen pill" thing..

Well, you have to match every part of the contract, not just the money or the parts you want to. So a team could put terms in the contract hat made it impossible for the home team to match... Like he gets 20 million if he plays five games in Texas, or whatever. Obviously he wouldn't meet that condition there, but he would here, so we couldn't match.

BUT... After Seattle and Minny had their little battle when Minny got Hutchinson and then Seattle got them back with Nate Burleson, the commish stepped in and I don't think made it technically illegal, but strongly "encouraged" owners not to do that anymore. And I don't think anyone has since then.

Anyway... Not worried about this. It's flattering they'd be interested in him that much.

The most interesting thing would be if we decided not to match. :)

Meh, we'll just match the offer.

Unless it has a poison pill. In which case I have a feeling Jerry would more than get even.

Goodell has really hammered teams on poison pills -- doubt that the Jets are going that direction.

You could probably do a Miles Austin and our second round pick for the 17th. Just some food for thought.

that is so true....I'm sorry

Jets Here:

Slate you are totally right, what were we thinking, trying to give you guys a second round pick for Austin, that would've been a steal. In fact, please don't call the police on us for attempted robbery..

you know what, we'll give you our 17th overall pick in this months draft for Austin, how bout that?? fair? you can maybe get Maclin or someone with potential....we'd much rather have Austin with his proven track record.

Much Apologies,
Jets

BUt what's the point? You replace one question mark with another? Plus Austin had the attitude we all want from our recievers..this guy could be great, just like Nicks,Robiskie or Britt..I'd rather just stick with a guy who's been with us 3 years and has a great team attitude.

Most wide receivers drafted in the 1st round have 0 career NFL receptions. At least two teams think he's worth a mid-round 2nd. A first isn't out of the question.
1. You're not slick, so quit trying to be.

2. Says who? Because two out of 31 teams are thinking taking a risk of a mid 2nd rounder, they're gonna lose their minds even more for somebody who's done absolutely nothing??

By your weak logic, Sam Hurd who has 6 more receptions in 3 fewer games, can get us a phone call from Detroit.

I don't want to lose Austin. But I don't want us to marry him yet either. He still needs to prove his worth. It will still likely take a lot to get him away from us.
