We could use that 2nd rounder, a 5th, Crayton and probably get Braylon Edwards since the Giants had the same picks but didn't want to add Steve Smith. The Browns apparently were ready to go but the Giants didn't want to give up Smith.

Just in case we lose Austin there is Torry Holt or Braylon Edwards as very possible options. One we just have to sign and the other we'd have to trade for but would have the ammunition. Even if we want to match a teams offer for Austin this is good news someone is serious about courting him. He's become valuable to us and worth good picks. We also know more about him than anyone else.

Trade Austin and get Holt.

Also No way in hell Maclin is there at 17...

I personally dont understand all this love for Austin? I mean the guy has like 18 catches in three years..... not spectacular numbers in my book....I say take the pick.....

I wonder how many people were saying the same thing about Jimmy Smith back in the day. Not everyone is an instant star.

I think some people are showing a bit too much love because he is one of our guys. If the situation was the same but he was on the Commanders we would be making loads of fun of them for pimping some unknown like him.

You could package the 17th and our 3rd and 4th to move up and grab him, while still having the 51st pick.

Do you think people would be acting the same way if it were Hurd? He's our guy, yes, but that means we know him better than most. If it were Hurd -- who was an UDFA in the same year as Austin and has actually played more football than Austin -- we'd laugh.

I still don't get why we didn't just tender him at a first-round rate.

Obviously, getting a 2nd round pick for a completely unproven guy (albeit with nice potential) isn't a bad tradeoff. But Jerry has publicly hitched his wagon to Austin, and I don't think it's realistic to think we could get equal short-term value for the plan we have in place for Austin.

He's a guy who has been working with Romo for, what, going on four years now? No way a 2nd-round rookie can replace that.

Again, I didn't understand it then and still don't. If we valued Austin so much, why not up the offer by an extra half-million or whatever it would have amounted to?
As crazy as it sounds, maybe Jerry hadn't made up his mind at the time? I think the tenders were given out a couple of weeks or so before TO was cut, right? Jerry said he didn't decide to do it until right before he actually flew to see TO... Maybe he meant it.

Move up how many spots? He *MIGHT* be the first WR taken...

Most wide receivers drafted in the 1st round have 0 career NFL receptions. At least two teams think he's worth a mid-round 2nd. A first isn't out of the question.

And in this draft, teams think only two receivers are worth drafting in the top 25, so, yes, Austin would look like a bargain for the 52nd pick.

To the 8th spot if the Raiders get Crabtree..I'm sure the Jags would take it. They need picks. I'm just throwing out scenario's..

Good point. Certainly plausible.

No, I said we could trade the Jets' pick for an established NFL vet. That said, I don't want to lose Austin, either.

Why trade? Torry Holt is just waiting by the phone.

If we take the pick, we can draft another WR and sign Holt as a stopgap until he's ready.

No lose either way IMO.

I disagree. Nicks as well as Britt are future #1 guys..

POTENTIALLY.. and neither are top 10, top 15 picks, which means that potential is even less likely.

Nobody knows what they will do. On the other hand, there's an existing book on Austin and what he can do.

You guys really think Jerry would heap all that praise on an unsigned player with a 2nd round tender for no reason?

If they make the offer, I've got a feeling Jerry bites. There's no reason for the kid not to be under contract already, especially if Jerry had dreams of making him #2.

If that's not the case, then Jerry has bungled the situation completely.

If Jerry believes in him, he should have been under contract already unless Miles already made up his mind to be a free agent and wasn't going to negotiate.

I think he might wheel n deal to get that 17th pick using Austin..Don't ask me how, but I'm sure he wants that first back. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

One thing Jerry could do is take that extra pick and trade it for an established receiver. But who?

Brylon Edwards. Forget Ocho Cinco or Anquan Bolden. Ocho Cinco is a mini-version of T.O. whom the Cowboys just got rid of, and Bolden's price is too high not only picks, but in the money he's seeking.

Edwards makes the most sense because he's still under his rookie contract, and he's a stretch the field receiver who'd fit perfectly with Roy Williams. Having said that, I don't know what the Browns are asking for him in return.

It is interesting to think about, at least IMO. The obvious first reaction is that with TO gone, we have to keep Miles no matter what. But what if there was a way to draft a guy with similar potential and fill in a vet for now? We could probably tell the Jets we were going to match, but throw in a 4th and you can have him.

If there were any way to get Maclin, I would do it in a heartbeat. But I don't think it's possible without giving up way too much.

It's too bad we don't have a young guy ready to step up. If only Stanback could've stayed healthy, maybe he'd be that guy. He's just as big and fast as Miles.
