Austin is likely better than anyone we're getting at that pick.

I wouldn't be so sure, look at recent draft history of the WRs who have been taken near that spot in the 2nd round.

2008 - Pick 49, DeSean Jackson
2007 - Pick 51, Steve Smith
2006 - Pick 52, Greg Jennings
2005 - Pick 61, Vincent Jackson
2004 - Pick 50, Devery Henderson
2003 - Pick 54, Anquan Boldin

Of course there are a lot of bad WR picks around there too, but almost every year there is a quality WR taken near pick 52.

I love all this talk of "there's no reason a draft pick will pan out" as if there's any indication Miles Austin will pan out as anything but a role player.

The coaching staff and the front office know what they have in Austin. If he's worth matching, they'll match it. If he's not... that's an extra second round pick.

Personally, I like the idea of an extra second.

I would take a 2nd round pick for a guy who hasn't done squat in this league in a heartbeat.

Some of you guys are buying into all this offseason hype about Miles Austin being the next T.O. or something. The fact remains he has shown a couple of flashes and that's it.

I like Miles and agree he has some potential but no way in hell anybody's going to give up a 1st rounder for him. I would take the 2nd rounder and sign Torry Holt.

Wish I would have gotten in earlier on this but I think you gotta match the offer.

It just isn't worth it. The team has nothing behind Austin. Counting on the draft to produce a WR who would contribute right off the bat is wishful thinking. Even top pick WRs don't come in game ready. There are exceptions but not many.

Keep the pick. Of course, there are those who are just enamored with draft picks. Stars in their eyes, they'd damn near make any move if it netted a pick.

Developing players to watch them go elsewhere and play is stupid. The team put the time in on this kid, keep him and let him have a chance to play.

Hard working with a great attitude. If he turns into a serviceable player, he would be a GREAT locker room presence.

Not worth a 2nd in my book.

I'm not buying into any hype. Draft picks are a pretty much a crapshoot and I don't think giving away a guy who has worked his *** off and improved every year is worth taking a shot on a rookie.

And if were talking about "doing squat", what exactly has any draft pick done? Picks are made on potential. If the team thinks Austin has great potential, it would be stupid to give him away just to get a pick. The team has plenty of picks. Sure, it would wash out in terms of losing a player/gaining a pick because the team would likely fill his spot with that pick but again, we're talking about filling the spot of a guy with potential with another guy who has potential.

No WR drafted in the 2nd has such an obvious high ceiling. If he did, he'd be in the 1st round.

Austin knows the system, works hard and has shown flashes. I can't say that the team would fair any better with a mid-2nd rounder. It would at least be a wash. Given the learning curve, I can't say that a player with that pick would come in and produce a ton. Unless the team just lucks out and is able to pick the right guy, production just won't be so great to make anyone say there has been a real upgrade.

You make some valid points, no doubt, but I just think Austin should have shown more than he has by now. Maybe some of that has to do with T.O. being a ball hog and Austin will produce more given more opportunities.

Also, with two 2nd round picks, that gives you some ammunition in case you did want to try and trade into the 1st round for someone.

Have you seen enough of Miles Austin to turn down a 2nd round pick for him, if you're Jerry Jones?

Jerry sees a TON more than any of ever could. He has access that we all dream about. Obviously by going with the 2nd round tender he has seen enough to turn down a 3rd rounder for the guy.

Is anyone else convinced by this thread that Louis Delmas is going to be a bust?

Huh? There could be no such thing as a third-round tender for Austin. It was either NO compensation, a second-round tender, a first-round tender or a first-and-third tender. The team chose the lowest tender that would allow us to receive some compensation if we lose him.

Personally, I think it's great that the Jets are interested in Austin.

Let the Jets do the dirty work for us.

Let the Jets constuct a longer term contract for Austin, and then we can match and have Austin signed up long-term. In other words, as JJ likes to say, let the market set the price.

One less FA we have to worry about signing in 2010.

This part of the story lept off the screen for me. If Jerry wanted to keep Miles on the squad, would he really go around singing his praises at the Owner's meeting, knowing that the RFA period has not ended yet?

Jerry does a lot of strange things, but something tells me that he's got something up his sleeve here. In the past, we've heard Jerry hype up prospects toward the end of pre-season to try to hang players out as trade bait.

Well, we'll certainly know by 4/17. If the Cowboys do not make any attempt to match, we'll know our boy Jerry was fixin' to set up a swappin' all along ...

Good point, why would Jerry be babbling about how awesome Austin is at the owner's meeting???

If Jerry really is that high on him, its kinda ******** to be telling all the other owners that.

I tend to think Jerry was "talking up" Austin with hopes of somebody taking the bait.
