DMN: Jets Courting Miles Austin

Take the Second and run Jerry... Trade up and take.. Not Macklin or Crabtree or Nicks... Get Percy Harvin. He's a instant playmaker.. Fast, Can return kicks, stretch the field and will be a perfect compliment to RW...

If that's the case keep Austin. I'm sorry, I'm not sold on Harvin as a legit WR in the NFL. I think he will make an instant impact on special teams but will play out his career in that role.

Not to mention, I'm not sure you would have to trade up far or at all to get Harvin.

It would be a mistake letting him go for the simple reason that he has been brought along for years to learn how to play by us, for us....

THEN we let him go(to start over) when we are giving him a chance to probably start?

No. I would keep him and see what happens. Besides, Jerry said what he said so we gotta believe(hehe) that there is no way he lets Austin go.

Kudos to whoever called the 2nd rounder for him.:worthy2:

We weren't sold on Desean Jackson either... He turned out pretty good...

Austin isn't worth matching a potential offer for 2 reasons. First, I don't think he's that good. Potential is one of my least favorite words in the world of sports. If he was worth the money, he would've shown it on the field, which he really hasn't to this point.

Second and most important, the Cowboys can't afford to overpay their 3rd receiver as they've already done for Roy and Crayton. Beg like heck for the Jets to overpay and take their 2nd round pick. You could draft a wr with the same or better talent and pay him far less.

Also, you'll never be able to move up to the first round with 2 middle second round picks. It will take next years first and a second to move up, similar to what buffalo gave to us a few years ago when we passed on Stephen Jackson.

I don't need to.

Go back into the history of the draft and read about countless receivers who were going to be #1's, according to " scouts ", but didn't.

Maybe.

Or maybe it's just you and they turn out to be busts ala: Rashaun Woods, who " Scouts " also thought was going to be a " #1 " guy. Or Mike Pritchard, or Peter Warrick, or Sylvester Morris, or Freddie Mitchell...

should I go on ?
2008 - Pick 49, DeSean Jackson, Eddie royal
2007 - Pick 51, Steve Smith
2006 - Pick 52, Greg Jennings
2005 - Pick 61, Vincent Jackson
2004 - Pick 50, Devery Henderson
2003 - Pick 54, Anquan Boldin

Should I go on and these aren't even 1st rd guys.. We can do this all day.

One other point.

Dallas getting another draft pick for Austin is one thing.

But when was the last time the Cowboys were able to draft a starting caliber receiver?

Their track record there is as poor as their record for drafting offensive linemen.

Even if they did get a pick for Austin, odds are they'd blow it.

Harvin is off our Draft board. He's one of 3 completely removed and no chance we would take.

Who are the other two?

well, Two days for a visit is odd.

They must know everything there is to know about austin.

Mike tannenbaum is one of parcells closest friends in the league. All he has to do is pick up the phone and ask for a break down of him and he will have it.

Seeing that parcells thought very highly of austin, maybe the jets find a way to make it difficult for us to sign him.

I really hope that doesnt happen. I like austin, alot. I really cant see Jerry losing him though, If jerry likes someone he almost always gets him, especially when he is already ours.

I think we match the offer unless it has a poision pill attached.

Trading up to around the 20th pick. Personally I'd stand pat and keep Miles...
Really? Do you believe Miles is worth a second round pick? I don't.

I think those comments from Jerry are just posturing. I don't think Austin will ever be a capable #2 receiver. He hasn't shown me anything in his few years here to make me believe that he will.

I wouldn't trade up either. Stand pat and get another quality player. Just not another tight end.

If we lose Austin, Get Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Hes going to take some time to develop but he is a bigtime athlete with bigtime upside.

I'll be shocked if we don't trade up in the 2nd round this year.

I imagine we will only come away with 6 maaaybe 7 players.

So Jerry's posturing.

Say you're right.

Jerry's 'plan' is to let Austin go, get a 2nd round draft pick and go with Roy Williams and Crayton as this team's starting receivers?

Heck of a 'plan'...

So why haven't the Jets signed him?

2 reasons. He may not want to play there and they aren't looking for a 2-3 year WR over 30. They want a youngster like Austin who they are only speculating on for 2 days. When they ship him back here instead of giving us a 2nd everyone will get a reality check as to really what level of talent Austin really is.

When's the last time Dallas even spent a 2nd round pick on a WR? Antonio Bryant? He's looking pretty good down in Tampa, even did here if he could keep his mouth shut. The rest have been later round picks and undrafted rookies.

Unless it was Maclin or Crabtree and we'd have to move up to get one of them, Jerry isn't drafting a WR before the 3rd round. Probbly the 4th since Rashad Johnson will be there in the 3rd.

Jerry would go get Holt or trade for another player like Braylon which I would have no quams about. Either would produce and pose a greater threat than Miles Austin. Even with Miles here we should be thinking about Holt or Braylon and possibly shipping Crayton and his big yap for a pick or in a player trade.

I thought Goodell outlawed those?

He can't do that -- but he's made it really clear that he is going to hammer teams that use BS provisions. The union isn't hot on the poison pill either because it potentially destroys the positive aspects of RFA -- for example, using a poison pill the Jets could make Austin a 2 mill a year offer that jumps to 10 mill a year if he plays more than 5 games in Texas each year. Clearly that kills our chances to match. Under a more reasonable approach they might offer him a "straight" 4 million a year - we'd give some thought to matching that deal certainly. So the player actually can end up with a lesser deal under a poison pill provision.

They're very much legit but super expensive for both teams involved.
