If anyone really thought that Steven Jackson had superstar potential, he would have gone allot earlier than the 24th pick.

I, along with almost every fan here, thought he has superstar potential.

It's strange how sometimes the NFL people just screw it up sometimes. How does Cedric Benson go top 5 (I think he went top 5, don't remember), but Stephen Jackson drops to 24 (ish)?

Jackson had some questions coming out of college, one being his speed and the other that he wouldn't be able to punish his way through NFL tacklers like he did in college. Unfortunately for us, that was a weak draft class for RB's. But he fell right to St. Louis who had a dire need at RB because Marshall Faulk was on his last leg (no pun intended), not because they saw superstar potential that fell in the draft. It was a perfect marriage for a team with all pro talent at QB and WR. Props to Jackson, but I don't think many NFL GM's saw a potential MVP candidate in the making.

That's a bunch of BS. Anyone with any type of eye for talent could see he had superstar potential. All players have questions coming out of college, but speed has never been an issue with him.

Unless he pulls it together this season he is going to be a backup journeyman for the rest of his career. He has the physical tools to play but he takes too many plays off.

Hopefully Carpenter won't be as big of a bust for us.

Your also forgetting that teams draft for need more than talent. If that wasn't the case Adrian Peterson would have been drafted higher.

Look at LJ; he ran above a 4.5 and he was picked high. Steven Jackson was a beast ane he had superstar written all over him. He is even better than I thought; that dude can catch.

Rack, I appologize in advance if I disagree with what your thoughts were. This board was buzzing with the possiblities of two first round picks the following year when we traded with Buffalo, very similar to the Brady Quinn situation as it presently stands. Many believed that Buffalo's pick would be a top ten. Many called Jackson a bust very early in his carreer as Julius was flashing his potental on MNF. I recall a ton of posts saying how we esentially swapped Julius and Spears for that "bust" Jacskon; shear brilliance. Many people here are very transparent and I don't mean that to be disrespectful; we're all Cowboys fans and we accentuate what we feel and hope are positives for our team.

What I find extremely irionic is that history may be repeating itself with Brady Quinn who many here were drooling over his junior year but no one believed he would hall into our laps when he did. When we passed on him, the excuses came out in force and we are again drooling over the posibility of a top 10 pick if not a number one and drafting McFadden. IF (and it's a big IF), Quinn becomes a superstar, will those same posters come on here and say "I knew it?" Please, those pro-Quinn posters on this site are few and far between at the present and are completely outnumbered and being drowned out by the those who support Jerry's "genius" trade. If Julius departs in FA, then we have a shot at McFadden; if Romo isn't the man, then we have the ammo to take a top tier QB (Brohm was mentioned). This is the overwhelming philosophy and mind-set on this board. Don't come on here two years later and be critical of a move that many, if not most, supported at the time it was made.

And look at how he's performed!

And look at how 26 other teams passed on him because he had major questions coming out of college, just like Jackson and just like Quinn more recently.

LJ was in Vermeil's dog house for some time and was even rumored to be trade bait with Dallas. Now, of course, we all knew he was a beast all along.

We wanted RB. Steven Jackson fell right in our laps and we said "feh".

We deserve Julius and Spears.

It will be a real shame if Carp and Spears dont turn out to be players that Big Bill thought they would be when he drafted them.

Would put a big question mark on Parcells drafting skills here in Dallas....

I know its early.....but we havent really seen anything from either one.

scheme? coaching?.....

I disagree. First rounders aren't the certain successes people want to believe- they fail or just become average all the time. Obviously that doesn't change the fact that perhaps Bill could have done better, but drafting is not an exact science, and I'm sure if you look at every team you will find some busts or mediocrity from their high draft picks over recent years.

The answer is yes. Yes I Will! I was on the other side of the fence with Jackson, so I have no guilt there. But as far as this is concerned, I will shamelessly switch my position and even lie to every person on this board so that I can be on the right side of the argument. I hope this helps you validate your concerns :)

I don't think anyone is saying that Spears is worthless, just maybe not the kind of player we thought he would be.

Hopefully he can pick up the pace and live up to his 1st round selection, but even if he doesn't he can be a solid member of our D-line rotation.

Spears has done nothing but underachieve and fail to live up to his first round status since he'd been here. He has this season to prove himself in Wade's defense, but I'm not holding my breath.

I wasn't one of those people excited about 2 firsts the next year. Of course I was HOPEFUL we would get someone good with their pick (we didn't). But at the time, I was so excited Jackson FELL IN OUR LAPS, then literally BROKE THINGS when we traded the pick. I was so PO'd I was about to have a heart attack.

At the same time, I'm excited about this year's trade. We didn't have a player I thought was a huge steal fall in our laps this year and I think there's a much greater chance of this pick being a high pick then I felt about the Buffalo pick.

I'm not an apologist, but my goodness. We need to give the guy some time in the new scheme in a regular season game to see if he can get the job done. Sure, he hasn't played lights out in preseason, but this immediate up or out attitude is tiresome.

I wouldn't say the attitude is immediate.

I agree we need to give him a little time in the new scheme before making a definitive judgement, but even in the old scheme you would have hoped to see at least occassional signs of life.

Right now all we are seeing is the same fairly lifeless guy - just a continuation of what we saw in the old scheme - so it's natural that fans would start to wonder.
