Anybody hear what Jon Gurden's nickname for our defense is--

The UFO Defense

Unidentified Flying Objects - I kinda like it.

We have 13 less sacks than we did last year at this point in the season? That's distressing given how poor the defense was last year.

They're getting pressure though, you know what they say close only counts with horseshoes & pass rush :p

Pressure players on this squad?

You want these players to become something their not? That's sad.

Call me when we start to lose the battle at the line of scrimmage? Because the Giants game is the only game we haven't dominated up front since week 1.

Try to work on their technique, try to study more tape, try to learn some different pass rush moves, keep trying anything.

Apparently your suggestion is to tell the players that they all just suck and don't have the talent or ability to get any sacks and call it a day..................I reject that type of thinking.

I'm not talking about Rod. I'm talking about fans who should be more realistic about the players abilities. Our only real hope for pass rush is Lawrence, Crawford closing the deal, or Spencer regaining his 2012 form.

I expected bend but don't break, create turnovers, keep teams out of the end zone, and to battle, that's what expected from this group. And they haven't disappointed in any area.

I'm not gonna be whinnying because they haven't gotten sacks. They've played better than solid defense. Go root for the Jags, I believe they were top 5 in sacks.

Get the SB out of your head. Think one playoff victory. Baby steps! 2015 is our year.

Sorry, but I am not waiving the white flag on the 2014 season. We have just a good a chance as anybody in the NFC, so you go ahead and give up on the season and tell the defensive players that they all suck and are just not good enough to get the job done. I will work with them and tell them failure is not an option and the idea that a 6-1 team is not a contender is loser talk.

We most certainly can win the NFC and go to the SuperBowl THIS YEAR, NOT 2015

Marinelli is a perfectionist. With that being the case, he's likely to be unhappy more often than he's not, as long as perfection is a tough thing for any mere mortal to achieve. He's also a taskmaster, a vital trait to have for one who demands perfection. That's our DC in a nutshell. They're a couple essential factors that enable his success, imho.

I also think he's just one of those people that commands attention. There's no telling what kinda stories he tells the guys about his days as a tunnel rat for the Marines in 'Nam. He's a badass. He also sets the bar high for your own good, and he manages to relate that to his players on a deeper level. I've certainly never heard anything but praise for him from his former players. To get grown men to play hard for you they have to respect you, and I think everyone can admit our defense is playing a lot better than we imagined.

Agreed. I do believe he has a charisma about him that draws people to his side. They say the most successful coaches are those who are able to get their charges to like them and "buy into" their methods. He's obviously a master at accomplishing that objective, considering his proven success as a defensive coach. He's a keeper.

He seems to care a lot about this team and these players for a guy that is being speculated with one foot out the door.
Here's the biggest problem with the idea he is leaving. Lovie is his friend, yes. But so is the guy Lovie hired as his DC, Leslie Frazier. Lovie is just going to stab a fellow African American in the back and take away a coveed coordinator's job from him to hire Rod?

I really, really doubt that. Expect Rod to be here for a while folks. This coaching staff is likely to stay intact for a while.

Per D Woodson:

“I’ve always been a guy that felt like sacks are overrated. Sacks are great when it’s a key moment and you really need it. … I’ve always been a guy that (focused on) third down efficiency and points against. If you can hold a teams to under 17 points, 20 points — 17 points a game is how we used to do it — but getting out on third down is huge. If your third-down efficiency is there and you’re at high clip, I think that’s more important than the sack totals. Pressures are huge also. Getting pressure on the quarterback and getting off the field on third down, that’s where I would lean.”

and you think that they would show an ability up to now unseen at all. That is certainly not realistic.

You need players first.

Remember when our OL consisted of the Costas, Nagys and Arkins? They needed to punch people in the mouth too. They couldn't. So we got real players. It's the same with the DL. You have a couple of keepers. The rest needs upgrading.

I agree with that and often times a lack of production can be mistaken for lack of effort when its just a lack of talent.

Your view of the team has certainly changed since the summer all the way up until the week 1 loss.

Who was the guy who said this team had loads of young talent that were ready to burst out and take the leap?

That be me!

I know this football team. They have a SB winning offense, they're one good defensive line draft away from a potential dynasty!

last year it was both lack of talent and lack of experience. Bad combination.

The technique has been great. It's the reason why they might not have registered sacks by the boat load, they have kicked teams *** at the point of attack. Which the Cowboys rarely did when they had Ware and the team was getting sacks.

I have no problem with the coach demanding more, that's his job. My problem is with fans not being realistic of their capabilities in the area as finishers(because they do get pressure minus the Giants game who went max protect a bunch) as pass rushers.
