He's on the Jeff Ireland path....lots of hype, some success then hired and fired somewhere else.. Hopefully with better results..

Yes and when he leaves the GM can call him an "information gatherer" just like he did when Ireland left.

McClay's duties:

1. Scouting and drafting college players. Top person in charge of making the draft board.

2. Scouting and signing veteran players.

3. Interfacing to the coaching staff to determine scheme fit for both veterans and draft picks.

4. Assessing current players on the roster. Includes "scouting" them in training camp and during the season.

What else does a GM do?
My point exactly.
McClay is the one doing the things that a GM would do on any other team. His job title is irrelevant. Even if he was the GM, he would still answer to Jerry. Jerry gets input and then makes the final decisions.
McClay's not performing a GM role. He's heading up scouting, essentially. That's a big job on its own. He doesn't need to add GM responsibilities, and, when he does, he'll do it elsewhere if Jerry's still around.

What are the job responsibilities of a GM in your own words? And what is McClay not doing that GM's are typically responsible for?

I'm thinking specifically about the cap management and contracts side of the GM job.

I love how these guys keep getting hyped. Ireland, Ciskowski and now McClay. I guess it allows Jerry to be GM while appeasing the fans by making them think we're in good hands with a hotshot personnel director. Then if it crashes and burns Jerry can let the underling take the fall while he continues playing GM.

Is it possible the GM duties are split up between McClay, Stephen, and Jerry. With jerry being the figurehead. The jones obviously know nothing about scouting and talent acquisition. I think after this long Jerry realizes he needs to hand over some of his GM power to somebody that might have a clue.

To you, I agree with most of this.

To all, I don't think of people answering to Jerry. I think of them sitting down together and bringing something to the table. Stephen is on top of the cap and not just this year but going forward. They need to know what they can spend today and tomorrow. McClay I see as not just coordinating this year but knowing something about the next year or two. Do you draft a QB this year you like or will there perhaps be better ones next year or more choices allowing a lower pick? He's not going to carry all that around in his head. It does appear he looks at a lot of players. They make a big board together and someone has players of interest on a notebook or tablet for all to review. I don't know that for certain but I'd bet a large sum of money its true.

This stuff is way too complicated for one soul to do it all or know it all. It takes coordinated input from multiple sources. Does Jerry sometimes cast a deciding vote? Surely. I doubt it comes to that as often as some here think although I suspect it did so more frequently in the past than now.

No. Every other team has a football guy who does everything on his own. Just like every military commander wins by himself with no staff and no help.

This is a double-edged sword.

A) he does a good job, he does not become the GM (as Jones wouldn't allow it)
b) he does a GREAT job with the draft and he gets pilfered by some other owner to become their GM (as Jones wouldn't allow it here)

moral of the story: his days in dallas are numbered (unfortunate)

Or he could help the team tread water for a few more years and then he'll just, you know- stick around for awhile.
Nobody knows til we know.

If this guy is really that good it's a shame he can't be the GM for this team.

considering he is far younger than Jerry not sure how anyone could assume he can't be GM.
since he has been rising in the org not sure it is a big deal if he isn't GM this year.
the older jerry gets the less GM he is.

Not anymore. Teams can't even interview him without permission.

I'd say it's more the case that fans who don't expect the front office to change dramatically are hopeful that it might change incrementally with the right pieces in place as Jerry slows down some.

I don't know that many of our fans at all are all that enthusiastic about the front office. A lot of people are just realistic about any prospects for how it actually might improve. Anybody holding out for a revolution is fooling themselves.
It's not realistic to think that some new wunderkind is going to come in here and reign Jerry in. Hell, he couldn't stand it when his teams were winning Super Bowls and someone else was getting "his credit." Anyone thinking McClay is the answer to what ails the Cowboys is fooling themselves. They can hope all they want... it ain't realistic.

Characterizations in place of facts. How typical of you.

I would bet that Will McClay doesn't even do a quarter of what you guys give him credit for. Hell, Stephen Jones contradicted everyone a few months ago and said that McClay wasn't even in charge of the draft board. You really think any of us know what he actually does? Whatever it is, it hasn't resulted in a winning season since gas was $1-something per gallon.

stopped reading here...

"said Gray, who is the godfather to McClay’s son, Gabriel."
And what more did you learn from the article when you stopped reading?

I actually agree. I was just describing what I thought the thought process probably was.
