Romo explained how that scenario goes. "It's a meritocracy"

It may be a meritocracy and maybe it should but say they just gave him 35 million would they still leave Dalton with the hot hand in there.

Dak is a much better QB in every possible metric. But even with that being the case, there is a team building and cap management aspect to this that has to be considered. Can you win with a mediocre QB if every other position is stacked? Possibly, but looking at the Superbowl history, There's not many Trent Dilfers or Brad Johnsons out there, and they had all-time defenses.

I'm not sure where you heard that the Cowboys were interested in Dalton coming out of college. They had Romo, Kitna was the backup and they had a young McGee that they were high on.. Except for the 1st round where they took Tyron Smith their next several picks were on the defensive side on the ball where they believed the biggest needs were . Picks like Ware, Carter (he was a bust) and a couple of DB's. I'm not saying that the Cowboys may have scouted Dalton I just never heard anything about them actually considering drafting him.

Here;'s what wrong with your analogy. When Prescott did it he was 22 years old and all the upside to come, Dalton is 32 years old on a 3 year slide and LOST his starting job and was signed to a 1 year 3 mil contract.

Prescott can't just "walk". He can sit out but the Cowboys know that he's smart enough to know that he'll lose money that he'll never be able to recoup.

I appreciate you pointing out the error in my analogy. Now here's what's wrong with yours...Dak had never thrown a pass in the regular season and was an inexperienced rookie. No one could have predicted his level of success at this level in such a short time. Looks like there are errors in both of our analogies.

None of that matters. The hot hand is the hot hand. Once it cools, then you can give Dak his job back.

Here';s the error in your comment with your implied analogy. They may have not had any NFL experience to draw on for Prescott but they do have a downward slide of NFL experience for Dalton and his 1 year 3 mil contract should be all anyone needs to know to figure out that it's strictly a 1 year insurance policy against any missed games by Prescott. Anyone that thinks that if Prescott misses any snaps let a lone games due to injury for the FIRST time in his career that Dalton would take over and Prescott wouldn't get his job back when ready is just a Prescott hater looking for any rationale to ease their mind on Prescott. Again when Prescott went in for an injured Romo a long with Moore, Romo was at the end of his career. That's not the case for Prescott.

If that was something written in stone than last season Bridgewater would have stayed the starter until he lost but no when Brees was ready to go he once again was the starter.

The Saints have a different decision-maker. It's not something written in stone but it is a rule that many of the top coaching minds adhere to. This is what meritocracy looks like. You're right, not all decision-makers in the NFL subscribe to it. If Sean Payton was our Head Coach in 2016, Romo probably would have got his job back about week 11 or 12. And who knows, maybe Romo gets his Super Bowl win and retires with a bang.

It's a wonderful thing that we have an official error corrector on CZ. I will sleep much better now knowing I can come to you and figure out everything I'm doing wrong with my analogies. I will just PM you directly next time so I can produce better posts in the future.

I'm sorry if common sense is so troubling to you. As far as you comments on this are concerned, an old saying fits them quite well. Making a mountain out of a mole hill. In other words reading way to much into signing Dalton as a 1 year insurance policy.

You're right about the possibility, repeat possibility, of if Payton was the Cowboys head coach in 2016, but please list all of the "top coaches" that stayed with a backup QB when their starter was able to play again. There must be a very long list of that? Before you say Nick Foles don't because Wentz wasn't 100% healthy.
