Do you think the game has passed by our Coordinators?

Our OC has an aversion to playing to the strengths that gave the team it's top status through the regular season.

Our DC seems to be a patch job wizard but perhaps not somebody you build a championship caliber defense with.
well said, and concise !
it partly is game planning too, if our coaches think the other team is bad in pass coverage we then try to beat them passing.
I think this is what they thought with GB, but really we need to go more with running every game as that is our true strength.

Our guys are ok, and linehan did good with dak, but some of the younger guys like kyle shanahan are better.
as for dc's rod is outdated, and plays too much zone and just doesnt know how to blitz.

I laugh for two reasons.

1) Our offensive production this year with a rookie QB.

2) Years may pass but some things about the game will never change. Nicknames and motivational t-shirts will always have a direct effect on who can play.
Marino had a huge rookie season, how many superbowls did he win?
BTW, I'm glad something makes you laugh. Lol

I'm not all that impressed with Marinelli, but our DBs are much improved over prior years. Maybe Marinelli had some hand in that.

Personally I would look to upgrade Marinelli if the opportunity presented itself.

Lineman was pretty good for the most part, but at tiles he outsmarts himself by passing instead of running when the run is obviously working already. Keep it simple stupid. That's partly on Garrett for not intervening and saying hell no we are running it on this down.

The team's use of Dez has been abysmal until it started to pick up this year. I'd say that was dated but improving.

Yeah, Atlanta doesn't have he greatest D line, but they sure brought pressure yesterday.
yes and on 1 play I know they had a guy come free thru a hole, and he got to rodgers, and teams do that to us,
but we never do that to other teams ??
When we blitz it is with the snap and never a delay thru a hole.

If we had a better OC they would get him the ball in various ways, and not just wide doing go routes, and ignore if doubled

I would like for all the posters who are espousing the game has passed the coordinators by to please outline exactly where this occurs and give examples of their decisions that are outdated, and then examples of the tuned in coordinators who make better decisions, please.

My opinion is you get better players, coaches and coordinators look better.

But I'll wait for your august answers to these questions.

We had seen some real success w/the 3-man line in our first game w/GB and in some other late-season games.

I'm all about aggressive defense, but sending four or five has to produce results.

I like using 3 down-line and then bringing 1 or 2...even 3 guys from various positions. We got all of our sacks from non-linemen so that tells us a lot.
The prevent is a terrible idea! It goes way back and almost always leads to defeat.

An offense with quality linemen, and a potentially top shelf quarterback, running back, tight end, and wide receiver...should be able to challenge any defense that it faces. That just isn't the application that hits the carpet. Oh, against an average team, the scoring can stay ahead of it's opponent. Then when a really tough defense comes along, well, they don't keep opposing linebackers flat footed; use play action to move secondaries back; or even screens and quick crossing patterns to thwart blitzes.

On defense, the linebacker group isn't settled; there is not a single force on the outside to put pressure on quarterbacks, oh they have a potential group for rotation, but little above that; and the secondary, skilled or not...just don't get turn-overs/interceptions. Talk, talk, talk, run all day...but no real quality that can be counted upon or designated as such.

Coaching?

If they were looking to get the TD then why did they kick a FG? lol. POOR TIME MANAGEMENT LOST US THAT GAME

They kicked the FG because it was 4th down when they kicked it. You want to complain fine but saying poor clock management is a fricken joke. Dallas made the 1st down then spiked it, they has a wideopen Dez on the next play but the ball was batted down at the line of scrimmage, they failed to pick up the 1st on the 3rd down and settled for the FG. Dallas was not playing for the tie nor should they. Poor time management try poor understanding on your part but then you would have nothing to Beach about and we all know that is your thing.

Our short comings on D are much more about talent than coaching

I agree. Rod does not play the game but he understands the game and gets guys with minimal talent to play hard. My hope is Dallas can focus both in the draft and FA on the defensive side and I think there is a good chance of Jaylon Smith will be in the lineup next season which should be a big help to this defensive unit

I think it wouldn't be fair to assess Marinelli negatively until such time as he's had the much-needed talent to produce successful play. If he's had the necessary components to win convincingly and still fails, only then is it the right time to cast doubt upon his competence. As far as Linehan is concerned, his story is yet to be told once the youngsters on offense have had the necessary time to develop to their capacity.

What does anyone expect Rod to do with the talent he has on defense? The defense played way above their level until they faced a qb like Rodgers, and then the talent level became exposed. I highly doubt any coordinator can do much when just about every qb we play has all day to throw the ball.

My opinion isn't necessarily tied directly to better talented players but the need of acquiring the right players. And I'm not necessarily saying RKG's. What I am saying are players who both fit your offensive and defensive philosophy and who rise to the occasion when their opportunity to shine falls on them.

For example, I look at the Patriots and see a few stars, with Brady as the main superstar, and a majority of players, cobbled together each season through the draft and free agency, who execute their assignments far more often than not in any down situation. For example, I remember commenting during the divisional game how I hoped our receivers must rise to the occasion like the Packers receivers, who were snagging passes, literally, all over the place--while also watching a capable Brice Butler, allow a perfectly thrown, totally catchable touchdown Prescott pass in the endzone, hit the ground.

I'm not looking for a roster overhaul. Heck, I'm not certain what I should expect Jones and the coaches to do about weeding out any players who just don't have what it takes to consistently not commit dumb penalties or who flub catches or who casually secure footballs during runs (thank goodness we now have Elliott) or who drop interceptions delivered on silver platters or who don't set the edge during run plays and allow runners lanes that shouldn't exist, etc.

I don't know what it will take to load this team with players who you can depend upon consistently, through four quarters of every game, to not only make routine plays but the hard ones too. And sure, my example of how the Packers receivers rose to the occasion lacks more relevance when you judge their performance against Atlanta but they did pretty well to help their team advance one game short of the Super Bowl. That's more than what our receiving corps as a whole can say during those few occasions when the opportunity to shine presented itself in the divisional round... and the refs didn't scratch those opportunities with a flag.

That's my ramble for today (I think).

Our coordinators aren't bad, that being said, there are a lot of young coordinators out there that have been doing a great job as of late. Do you think the game is starting to pass them by. They were a combined 21-63 as head coaches. Not calling for anyone to get fired, just interested in your thoughts.
13-3 is not falling behind the times.
Everything on this team is clicking -- from drafting to blocking.
The Achilles's heel, mate, is a third rate secondary (deep secondary). And lack of a pass rush. Coach Marinade can do only so much with camp detritus.

Unless Marinelli retires, I don't see any changes to the coordinators positions.

Whether people like it or not, Linehan gets a lot of credit for Dak's success. He has a contract for next year. He is staying.
Its hard to find fault with either of them.

Marrinelli has had no draft picks other than Byron Jones to work with.

And to me, Jones needs to move to a corner where we need playmakers. Let Carr go and Claiborne and start Brown, too.

So many players we were counting on have crashed and burned. Some seem to be just not very good.

Its going to take an equal effort as has been made on the offense to rebuild our defense.

We are several seasons from winning a title.

Give me players not more coordinators with new schemes to install and new assistants to work in.

We can't keep rebuilding things.

The Cowboys won 13 games with mediocre talent on defense and a rookie QB.

The coaches had to be quite competent in order to win the 13 games.
