I would like for all the posters who are espousing the game has passed the coordinators by to please outline exactly where this occurs and give examples of their decisions that are outdated, and then examples of the tuned in coordinators who make better decisions, please.
My opinion is you get better players, coaches and coordinators look better.
But I'll wait for your august answers to these questions.
My opinion isn't necessarily tied directly to better talented players but the need of acquiring the right players. And I'm not necessarily saying RKG's. What I am saying are players who both fit your offensive and defensive philosophy and who rise to the occasion when their opportunity to shine falls on them.
For example, I look at the Patriots and see a few stars, with Brady as the main superstar, and a majority of players, cobbled together each season through the draft and free agency, who execute their assignments far more often than not in any down situation. For example, I remember commenting during the divisional game how I hoped our receivers must rise to the occasion like the Packers receivers, who were snagging passes, literally, all over the place--while also watching a
capable Brice Butler, allow a perfectly thrown, totally catchable touchdown Prescott pass in the endzone, hit the ground.
I'm not looking for a roster overhaul. Heck, I'm not certain what I should expect Jones and the coaches to do about weeding out any players who just don't have what it takes to consistently not commit dumb penalties or who flub catches or who casually secure footballs during runs (thank goodness we now have Elliott) or who drop interceptions delivered on silver platters or who don't set the edge during run plays and allow runners lanes that shouldn't exist, etc.
I don't know what it will take to load this team with players who you can depend upon consistently, through four quarters of every game, to not only make routine plays but the hard ones too. And sure, my example of how the Packers receivers rose to the occasion lacks more relevance when you judge their performance against Atlanta but they did pretty well to help their team advance one game short of the Super Bowl. That's more than what our receiving corps as a whole can say during those few occasions when the opportunity to shine presented itself in the divisional round... and the refs didn't scratch those opportunities with a flag.
That's my ramble for today (I think).
